(CAP. 327)
Bye-Laws of 2005 in terms of the
General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2004
for the Certificate in Lace Studies
under the auspices of the Institute for Islands and Small States
IN exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 30(5) and
31(6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of the University of
Malta has promulgated the following bye-laws made by the Board of the
Institute for Islands and Small States in virtue of the powers conferred upon it
by section 37 (1) of the said Act and which have been approved by the Senate
of the University of Malta as required by section 37 (2) of the said Act:
Citation and Interpretation
1. (1) These bye-laws may be cited as the Bye-Laws of 2005 in terms of the
General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2004 for the Certificate in
Lace Studies under the auspices of the Institute for Islands and Small States.
(2) In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires “the Board” means the Board of the Institute for Islands and Small States;
“the Board of Studies” means the Board of Studies appointed by Senate for the
Course; and
“the Course” means the programme of study leading to the Certificate in Lace
Studies.
Applicability
2. These bye-laws shall be applicable for courses commencing in October 2003
or later.

Requirements for Admission
3. To be registered as regular students in the Course, applicants shall satisfy the
general requirements for admission as specified in the Admission Regulations of the
University.
Course Duration
4. The Course shall extend over two semesters of part-time study.
Course Programme
5. The programme of study shall consist of:
(a) a number of taught study-units covering historical, cultural, technical and
economic aspects of lace making, to which 24 credits shall be assigned; and
(b) a study-unit comprising an individual practical project, to which 6 credits
shall be assigned.
Supplementary Assessment
6. (1) Students may be re-assessed in any failed taught study-units during the next
scheduled examination session, normally in September.
(2) Students who fail in taught study-units to which 8 or more credits are
assigned shall not be eligible for re-assessment and shall be considered to have
definitively failed the Course.
(3) Students who fail in the re-assessment of any study-unit shall be considered
to have definitively failed the Course.
Project Study-Unit
7. (1) Students shall be required to submit proposal for a project which shall be
submitted according to the guidelines published in the catalogue of study-units and
within the period established by the Board of Studies.
(2) The Board of Studies shall appoint a supervisor for each student.
(3) Students who fail the project study-unit shall be allowed to re-submit it
once only for reassessment within a period of six months.
