Bye-Laws of 2005 in terms of the
General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2004
for the Degree of Bachelor of Science (Business and Computing)
- B.Sc. (Bus. & Comp.) under the auspices of the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy
IN exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 30(5) and
31(6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of the University of
Malta has promulgated the following bye-laws made by the Board of the
Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy in virtue of the powers
conferred upon it by section 37 (1) of the said Act and which have been
approved by the Senate of the University of Malta as required by section 37
(2) of the said Act:
Citation and Interpretation
1. (1) These bye-laws may be cited as the Bye-Laws of 2005 in terms of the
General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2004 for the degree of
Bachelor of Science (Business and Computing) - B.Sc. (Bus. & Comp.) - under the
auspices of the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy.
(2) In these bye-laws, unless the contest otherwise requires “the Board” means the Board of the Faculty of Economics, Management and
Accountancy;
“the Course” means the course programme leading to the degree of Bachelor of
Science (Business and Computing) - B.Sc. (Bus. & Comp.);
“the Degree” means the Degree of Bachelor of Science (Business and
Computing) - B.Sc. (Bus. & Comp.); and
“the Principal Regulations” means the General Regulations for University
Undergraduate Awards, 2004.

Applicability
2. These bye-laws shall be applicable for courses commencing in October 2003
or later.
Areas of Study
3. The two areas of study are the following: Business Studies, and Computing
Studies.
Special Course Requirements for Admission
4. To be registered as regular students in the Course, applicants shall, apart
from satisfying the general requirements for admission as specified in the Admission
Regulations, be in possession of the special course requirements listed hereunder:
(a) Advanced Matriculation Level passes at grade C or better in one of:
Accounting;
Economics;
Computing
or
Information
Technology;
Mathematics;
and
(b) Intermediate Matriculation Level passes at grade C or better in the
following subjects if applicants have not already offered these subjects at Advanced
Matriculation Level:
and
(i)
(ii)
Accounting;
either Information Technology or Computing.
For courses commencing in October 2014 or later:
4. To be registered as regular students in the Course, applicants shall, apart from
satisfying the general requirements for admission as specified in the Admission
Regulations, be in possession of Intermediate Matriculation Level passes at grade C or
better in the following subjects if applicants have not already offered these subjects at
Advanced Matriculation Level:

Mathematics; and
either Information Technology or Computing.

Duration of Course
5. The Course shall extend over a period of three years of full-time study.
Course Programme
6. (1) The Course shall consist of study-units to which 180 credits are assigned
divided as follows:
(a) First Year: 32 credits in the Business Studies area of study, 24 credits in the
Computing Studies area of study, and 4 credits for optional study-units;
(b) Second Year: 28 credits in the Business Studies area of study, 30 credits in
the Computing Studies area of study, and 2 credits for optional study-units; and
(c) Third Year: 30 credits in each of the two areas of study, including a
compulsory synoptic study-unit in each area of study.
(2) In order to be allowed to proceed to the second year of the Course, students
must obtain a mark of not less than 45% in each of the compulsory study-units taken in
the first year in the Business Studies and the Computing Studies areas of study.
7. The Board shall publish the course programme of studies and the
programmes of study for each area of study, drawn up in accordance with the relevant
provisions of the Principal Regulations, and approved by Senate, before the
commencement of each Course. Subject to the approval of Senate, the Board may make
any necessary changes to the programme of study and to the study-units required for the
Degree.
Classification of the Award
8. The final classification of the Degree shall be based on the results obtained
in the three years of the Course, which shall be weighted as follows:
(a) study-units comprising the Business Studies area of study and optional
study-units:

Third Year Average Mark

65%; and
(b) study-units comprising the Computing Studies area of study shall be
weighted equally.
