European Master in Mediterranean Historical Studies Degree Course Regulations,
2007
IN exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 74 (5) and
75 (6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of the University of
Malta has promulgated the following regulations made by the Senate of the
University of Malta by virtue of the powers conferred upon it by sections 75
and 79 of the said Act:
Citation and Interpretation
1. (1) These regulations may be cited as the European Master in Mediterranean
Historical Studies Degree Course Regulations, 2007.
“(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires –
“the Board” means the Board of the Faculty of Arts;
“the Board of Studies” means the Board of Studies, appointed by Senate, on the
recommendation of the Board, responsible for the academic administration and
organisation of the Course;
“the Course” means the programme of study leading to the degree of Master in
Mediterranean Historical Studies;
“the Degree” means the degree of Master in Mediterranean Historical Studies;
and
“the Faculty” means the Faculty of Arts.
Applicability
2. These regulations shall apply to courses starting in October 2007 or later.

Qualifications for Admission
3. To be admitted to the Course, applicants shall be in possession of a
Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class Honours or Category II in a related subject
from this University, or a degree from another recognized university, deemed by Senate
to be equivalent.
Course Duration
4. (1) The Course shall extend over twelve months of full-time study or the
equivalent in part-time study.
(2) Students pursuing studies on part-time basis shall be required to enrol at
the beginning of each academic year.
Programme of Studies
5. The programme of studies shall consist of taught study-units, to which 50
ECTS credits shall be assigned, and a dissertation, to which 25 ECTS credits shall be
assigned. The programme shall be published prior to the commencement of each
Course, following the approval of Senate.
Catalogue of Study-Units
6. The Board of Studies shall draw up a catalogue of all the taught study-units
on offer. The catalogue shall indicate the level, code, title, description and type of each
study-unit, the credits assigned to each study-unit, and the methods of teaching and
assessment. The Board shall publish the catalogue prior to the commencement of each
Course, following the approval of Senate.
Assessment
7. Results for the assessment of the study-units and the dissertation shall be
published as a percentage mark and grade as indicated in the table below:

Both the percentage mark and the grade shall be recorded in the students’ academic
record. However, only the percentage mark shall be used for the purpose of calculating
the final classification of the award.
8. Students who fail in any taught study-unit shall be allowed a supplementary
assessment once only. If unsuccessful, students shall be required to withdraw from the
Course. In supplementary assessments, the maximum mark and grade that may be
awarded shall be 45% – grade D.
Dissertation
9. (1) The programme of studies includes the writing of a dissertation, of
approximately 25,000 words, on any aspect of Mediterranean history, but which should
not be tied entirely to the history of the student’s own country. The history of one’s
own country may be included if the overall theme is sufficiently broad and the approach
involves comparison and/or the study of connectivity. The dissertation must be either a
record of original work or an ordered and critical expression of existing data with regard
to the approved subject. The dissertation must satisfy the Board of Examiners as regards
language and literary presentation. The subject of the dissertation shall be approved by
the Board of Studies.
(2) No dissertation shall be accepted which is identical in substance to a
document already submitted for a degree at the University of Malta or at any other
university or to any other published material. Students shall, however, not be precluded
from incorporating such previous work as may be necessary to the presentation and a
fuller understanding of their exposition, provided that the nature and extent of such
incorporation are clearly indicated in the dissertation itself.
10. (1) The Board shall appoint a supervisor for each student. Supervisors may
refer to the Board of Studies students whose progress they consider unsatisfactory and
shall refer any substantial modification in the title or content of the dissertation for the
approval of the Board.
(2) Students should obtain their supervisor’s advice in writing regarding
whether the expected standard has been reached, prior to submission of their
dissertation. Students may submit their dissertation against the advice of their
supervisor on their own responsibility but are required to attach their supervisor’s
advice on their submission.
11. (1) Each dissertation shall be examined by a Board of Examiners composed
of at least three examiners. At least one of the examiners shall normally be an external
examiner from one of the other Partner Institutions.

(2) Students shall normally be required to take a viva voce examination to
defend their dissertation.
12. Students whose dissertation is found unsatisfactory may be allowed by the
Board, on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners, to re-submit it in a revised
form within a period of not less than two and not more than six months from the day on
which it is referred back to them.
Award of Degree
13. (1) Students shall satisfy the requirements for the award of the Degree if
they obtain the 75 ECTS credits indicated in regulation 5.
(2) The final classification of the Degree shall take into account all the
results obtained in the assessments of the taught component of the Course and the
dissertation, and of the oral defence if this has been required.
(3) The names of students who qualify for the award of the Degree shall
be published in a list in alphabetical order classified as follows:
