Report on
UCL - French Embassy Science and Technology Workshops on
NANOMATERIAS FOR BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS
Lead by Professor Nguyễn T. K. Thanh (UCL) and Professor Sylvie Colin-Begin
(University of Strasbourg, France)
1. Overview
We express our sincere gratitude to the French Embassy and UCL for funding the workshop.
The was held in University College London, 16 Taviton Street, room 347, on the 9th and
10th of January 2014
The aim of the workshop was to create a forum for leading research scientists between UCLFrance to exchange knowledge and collaborate. It also fostered a new interdisciplinary
network of chemists, chemical engineers, physics and clinicians to tackle one of the
European Commission Horizon 2020 Societal challenges namely “Human Wellbeing and in
Health, demographic change”. The network was very important for an initial step of building
a consortium to be prepared for the next phase of funding from EU.

3. Outcome of the Workshop
-The workshop was extremely successful. We were able to exchange results and
collaboration.
-Prof Sylvie Begin and Prof Thanh were successful in getting the EU COST
Action TD1402 (http://www.cost.eu/domains_actions/TDP/Actions/TD1402):
Multifunctional Nanoparticles for Magnetic Hyperthermia and Indirect Radiation
Therapy (RADIOMAG) funded with other European colleagues.
-Prof Sylvie Begin and Prof Thanh were met up again after the workshop at a Magnetic
Carriers conference in May, where Prof Thanh were introduced to other French colleague
Prof. Oliver Sandre, Senior CNRS researcher, Laboratoire de Chimie des Polyméres
Organiques (LCPO) (UMR5629) – ENSCPB, University of Bordeaux, Pessac, France. Also
Prof Thanh has meet other European colleague Alexandre Pfeifer, they are now working on a
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Core-Core Program and with Prof Thanh
is the Network co-ordinator. If the network is successful, French colleagues will be invited to
the Network workshop.
-Prof Thanh is currently planning in co-ordinating a Horizon 2020 Training Network with
colleagues in France.
- Prof Sylvie Begin and Prof Thanh are collaborating together in developing a novel contrast
agent for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), where Prof Thanh is visiting Prof Begin lab
this September for conducting experiments and later will send her student to Strasbourg.
- Prof Sylvie Begin has introduced Prof Thanh to her students, as a consequence a Master
student Sara Mahiddine from University of Strasbourg came to Prof Thanh’s lab under
Eramus Program. This period is very successful for Sara as she was involved in writing a
review with Prof Thanh, and it was published in Chemical Reviews, it has the highest Impact
Factor in Chemistry at 45.661 and is also a highly cited journal in the category of
Multidisciplinary Chemistry.
- Prof Thanh’s recent PhD graduated student Cristina Blanco-Andujar will be working in Prof
Sylvie Begin as a postdoc researcher.
- Miss Aziliz Hervault who studied with Prof Sylvie Begin at École européenne de chimie,
polymères et matériaux at Strasbourg University is now doing PhD with Prof Thanh.
-Prof Thanh is now working with Prof Sylvie Begin on an application with collaboration
with American colleagues for an NSF grant on Partnerships in International Research and
Education-PIRE.
-Prof Sylvie Begin and Prof Thanh would like organise a symposium at European Materials
Research Society meeting.
These are some examples of the immediate outcome from the workshop, as time go on, there
will be more interaction and collaboration and success stories.
