2.8
Faculty of Biomedical Sciences Variations for Fields of Study and
Requirements and Consideration for the Award of an Honours Degree
Under the Regulations for 12 or 16 Course Unit Programmes
2.8.1
Consideration for the Award of an Intercalated Honours Degree in the
Faculty of Biomedical Sciences
i)
Calculation of the award should be undertaken on the basis of a twelve
course-unit programme with the pre-clinical first and second years of
the MBBS counting as eight course units along with the four course
units from the intercalated year;
ii)
The weighting should be 1: 1: 4 (first; second; third);
iii)
In calculating the classification, the marks of University of London UCL
MBBS students should be used as they stand, with results of MBBS
students from outside the University of London being assessed on a
case by case basis by UCL immediately prior to the student’s
enrolment to determine whether existing year 1 and 2 marks can be
used. Where this is not possible, credit will be given for years 1 and 2,
with such cases being reported to the UCL Board of Examiners.
Guidance for students and staff: In calculating the classification, the marks of
University of London and UCL MBBS students should be used as they stand, with
results of medical students from outside the University of London being assessed on a
case by case basis by the UCL Faculty Sub Dean (Admissions, Student Support and
Welfare), Royal Free and UCL Medical School, immediately prior to the student’s
enrolment to determine whether existing year 1 and 2 marks can be used. Where this
is not possible, credit will be given for years 1 and 2, with such cases being reported to
the UCL Board of Examiners.
2.8.2
Consideration for the Award of BSc for Holders of MBBS Qualifications
A student who holds an MBBS degree of the University of London awarded not
more than three-years prior to registration for the BSc intercalated degree will
be eligible for the award of an intercalated BSc degree under these regulations
provided that:
i)
The programme of intercalated study has lasted for at least one
academic year;
ii)
Course units valued at four course units have been completed of which
at least three must be at final year level;
iii)
Course units to the value of at least three course units have been
passed;
iv)
Of the minimum number of course units required, none has been
designated as first level and course units to the value of not more than
1.5 course units have been related to course units with an examination
based on a project(s). A 0.5 course unit option, and no more, may be
credited from an area of study outside of the main field of study.
Guidance for students and staff: Please see item 2.1.2 and the related guidance for
students and staff for information on course unit levels.
2.8.3
Determination of a Field of Study for an Intercalated Degree
The field of study for students who are awarded an intercalated BSc degree
after an intercalated year of study will be determined as follows:
2.8.4
i)
The field of study will be either Medical Sciences with the appropriate
subject, or, if two course units have been completed, it will be Medical
Sciences ‘with’ one subject, and with ‘and’ for the other subject.
ii)
In all other cases, save where it is judged appropriate to add the
phrase ‘and Clinical Sciences’ after ‘Medical Sciences’, the field shall
be Biomedical Sciences or Clinical Sciences.
Non Concurrent Programme Registration
Except with the special permission of UCL, a student may not be registered
concurrently for an intercalated BSc degree and a degree in the UCL Faculty of
Medicine, another degree within UCL, or a degree at any other institution.
