Limited Submissions
Limited submission programs have
sponsor restrictions on the number of
proposals that may be submitted by a
single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which
applications will be submitted. Dr. Jim
Guikema, Associate Vice President for
Research, is the internal coordinator for
limited submission programs. Please
notify him at 785-532-6195, email:
guikema@ksu.edu, by the Internal due
date listed in the Funding Bulletin or by
at least two months prior to the sponsor
deadline if you wish to submit to a limited submission program. Currently

scientific basis of exposure predictions
by providing values for key model
parameters, building confidence in
model assumptions, and confirming
model predictions for relevant pathways; and 3) develop and/or apply innovative technologies and methods to
profile chemicals and related metabolites
associated with consumer products in
biological media. This solicitation provides the opportunity for the submission
of applications for projects that may
involve human subjects research. EPAG2013-STAR-K1

23-2 Request For Proposals (USCP)
The United Sorghum Checkoff Program
(USCP) is soliciting proposals for targeted research and education. They
request proposals in strategic program
areas - Crop Improvement, Renewables,
High Value Markets. The goal of the RFP
is to further enhance the opportunities for
sorghum producers through specific
projects and/or education that will
increase productivity and/or demand

23-1 New Methods in 21st Century
Exposure Science (EPA)
23-3 Documenting Democracy Access
to Historical Records Project (NARA)
The U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA), as part of its Science to
Achieve Results (STAR) program, is seeking applications proposing innovative
research to advance methods for characterizing real-world human exposure to chemicals associated with consumer products in
indoor environments. Current understanding of human exposure to the chemical
constituents of consumer products is limited due to inadequate information on formulations, emissions, and persistence in
indoor environments associated with the
diversity of usage scenarios. Methodological limitations currently impede collection
of robust exposure information that is necessary to provide context for the results of
a growing body of high throughput toxicity testing results and to characterize risk
to human health for the general population
and vulnerable groups. This solicitation
seeks to support research that will: 1)
develop and/or apply innovative technologies and methods to characterize presence
and co-occurrence of suites of semivolatile
chemicals (dozens to hundreds) in realworld indoor environments associated
with emissions from and use of consumer
The National Historical Publications and
Records Commission seeks proposals
that promote the preservation and use of
the nation’s most valuable archival
resources. Projects should expand our
understanding of the American past by
facilitating and enhancing access to primary source materials. The Commission
will support such activities as establishing archives programs, processing archival collections at the basic or detailed
levels, surveying and accessioning archival records, and converting existing
archival collection finding aids to new
online formats. ACCESS-201310 (GG 6/

23-4 KUMC Sequencing Pilot Award
Program (KUMC)
The KUMC Genomics Core in partnership with the Bioinformatics Core, Illumina Inc., Kansas Intellectual
Development Disability Research Center
(KIDDRC), Cell and Developmental
COBRE, KINBRE and Frontiers: The
Heartland Institute for Clinical and Translational Research has implemented a
NextGen Sequencing Pilot Award program which provides investigators the
opportunity to apply for access to free
next generation RNA sequencing. Successful applicants will receive up to 6
RNA-seq library preparations and one
sequencing lane on a high output 100
cycle paired end sequencing run using the
Illumina 2500 sequencing system.
Sequence analysis provided by the Bioinformatics Core is included with the
Award. The goal of the Sequencing Pilot
Award is to assist new or established faculty in securing new grant funding using
next-generation sequencing data and to
promote the use of cutting-edge next generation sequencing technology for
genomic and translational research.

23-5 DoD Peer Reviewed Medical
Discovery Award (DoD)
The intent of the PRMRP Discovery
Award is to support innovative, untested,
high-risk/ potentially high-reward concepts, theories, paradigms, and/or methods. Studies supported by this award are
expected to lay the groundwork for future
avenues of scientific investigation. The
proposed research project should include
a well-formulated, testable hypothesis
based on strong scientific rationale and
study design. The proposed research
project should be novel and innovative.
Innovative research may introduce a new
paradigm, challenge existing paradigms,
look at existing problems from new perspectives, or exhibit other highly creative
qualities. Research that is an incremental
advance upon published data is not considered innovative and is not consistent
with the intent of this award mechanism.

23-6 DoD Prostate Cancer
Exploration-Hypothesis Development
Award (DoD)
The PCRP Exploration - Hypothesis
Development Award mechanism was first
offered in FY03. Since then, 1,814 Exploration - Hypothesis Development Award
applications have been received, and 209
have been recommended for funding. The
Exploration - Hypothesis Development
Award supports the exploration of highly
innovative, untested, potentially highgain concepts, theories, paradigms, and/or
methods that address an important problem in prostate cancer. Results of studies
conducted through this award may provide the scientific rationale upon which a

new hypothesis can be based or initial
proof-of-principle of an innovative
hypothesis. This award is designed to provide investigators the opportunity to pursue serendipitous observations that may
reveal entirely new avenues for investigation. Presentation of preliminary data is
inconsistent with the intent of this award
mechanism and is therefore strongly discouraged. However, logical reasoning and
a sound scientific rationale for the proposed work must be described. The PCRP
seeks applications from the wide spectrum of basic, population science, translational, and clinical research. In addition,
applicants are expected to address at least
one of the PCRP focus areas and are
highly encouraged to address one of the
PCRP overarching challenges.

scientific problems and opportunities that
could lead to significant public benefit. In
addition to supporting scientific research
and development, the program’s primary
goal is to provide incentives and opportunities for small business firms to convert
USDA-sponsored research to technological innovation in the private sector. All
proposed research should have some
potential commercial outcome. Projects
dealing with agriculturally related manufacturing and alternative and renewable
energy technologies are encouraged
across all 2014 SBIR topic areas. USDANIFA-SBIR-004332 (GG 6/19/13)

Rural youth encounter economic and
physical barriers that prevent them from
receiving adequate care, services, or
resources necessary for healthy development. The Rural Youth Development
Grants Program is intended to break down
barriers to participation, especially for
rural youth; enhance opportunities for
youth involvement in policy and decisionmaking; create safe and inviting environments for youth activities; and improve
access to information and technology. The
overall goal of the program is to provide
opportunities for rural youth to improve
their own lives and the communities in
which they live. USDA-NIFA-F4HN004329 (GG 6/14/13)

23-7 Saudi American Educational and
Cultural Initiative Grant (DOS)
The Public Affairs Section of the U.S.
Embassy to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
is now accepting proposals for a new
grant called the Saudi-American Educational and Cultural Initiative Grants
(SAECIG) and is for Saudi and U.S. nongovernmental and community organizations, universities, entrepreneurs, cultural
organizations or qualified individuals
who propose to work together to develop
or expand educational, professional and
cultural exchange activities and promote
dialogue and partnership between the
people of the United States and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The new grant will
support innovative forms of collaboration
to expand the diversity of activities in the
U.S.-Saudi partnership and develop the
next generation of leaders, especially

23-10 Case Management Study
(KACAP)
The Kansas Association of Community
Action Program is issuing a Request For
Proposals from researchers qualified to
help the Kansas CAA network identify
common factors of case management success. (In other words, what are our case
managers doing to successfully engage,
maintain, and eventually graduate case
management customers from our programs?) Identifying the common factors
of success will help improve the services
provided in evidence-based/evidenceinformed ways.
