Limited Submissions
Limited submission programs have
sponsor restrictions on the number of
proposals that may be submitted by a
single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which
applications will be submitted. Dr. Jim
Guikema, Associate Vice President for
Research, is the internal coordinator for
limited submission programs. Please
notify him at 785-532-6195, email:
guikema@ksu.edu, by the Internal due

34-2 Secure and Trustworthy
Cyberspace (SaTC) (NSF)
Cyberspace has transformed the daily lives
of people for the better. The rush to adopt
cyberspace, however, has exposed its fragility and vulnerabilities. The National
Science and Technology Council with the
cooperation of NSF has advanced a broad,
coordinated federal strategic plan for
cybersecurity research and development to
change the game, check the misuses of
cyber technology, bolster education and
training in cybersecurity, establish a science of cybersecurity, and transition promising cybersecurity research into practice.
Vol. 21, No. 34
This program welcomes proposals that
address Cybersecurity from a Trustworthy Computing Systems perspective
(TWC); a Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences perspective (SBE); and a
Transition to Practice perspective (TPP).
In addition, they welcome proposals that
integrate research addressing two or
more of these perspectives as well as
proposals focusing entirely on Cybersecurity Education. Proposals may be submitted in one of the following three
categories: Small projects with durations
of up to three years; Medium projects
with durations of up to four years; Frontier projects with durations of up to five
years; and Cybersecurity Education with
total budgets limited to $300,000 and
durations of up to two years. NSF 12-596

34-3 EPA Environmental Education
Regional Grants (EPA)
The purpose of the Environmental Education Grants Program is to provide
money to support environmental education (EE) projects that increase the public’s awareness about environmental
issues and provide them with the skills to
take responsible actions to protect the
environment. Environmental information
and outreach may be important elements
of EE projects, but these activities by
themselves are not environmental education. By itself, environmental information only addresses awareness and
knowledge, usually about a particular
environmental issue. Outreach involves
information dissemination and requests
or suggestions for action on a particular
issue (often without the critical thinking,
problem solving and decision making
steps in between). EE covers the range of
steps and activities from awareness to
action with an ultimate goal of environmental stewardship.EPA-EE-12-01

34-4 Development of Mathematical
Cognition and Reasoning and the
Prevention of Math Learning
Disabilities (R21) (NIH)
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is intended to stimulate
innovative, multidisciplinary research on
the cognitive, neuroplasticity, genetic
and environmental factors involved in
math learning and learning disabilities.
This research will advance our knowledge of the factors that contribute to the
development, advancement, and impairment of mathematical cognition, includ-
ing the ability to apprehend and reason
about magnitude, number, temporal and
spatial relationships, and concomitantly
provide the evidence base to inform the
design of effective (i.e., efficacious in real
world contexts) interventions for the
remediation and/or prevention of mathematical learning disabilities (MLD). PA12-246 (NIHG 7/27/12)

ARTS & HUMANITIES
34-5 NEA Research: Art Works, FY
2013 (NEA)
The NEA’s strategic plan identifies
research as a mission-critical goal—specifically, to promote public knowledge
and understanding about the contribution
of the arts. Through high-quality research,
the NEA will expand opportunities for
rigorous research that investigates the
value of the U.S. arts ecosystem and the
impact of the arts on other domains of
American life. The NEA’s Office of
Research & Analysis (ORA) has identified priorities in support of this overarching research goal, including: 1)
Identifying and cultivating new and existing data sources in the arts; 2) Investigating the value of the U.S. arts ecosystem
and the impact of the arts on other
domains of American life; 3) Elevating
the public profile of arts-related research.
To help achieve these goals, the ORA has
implemented a grants program for
research in and about the arts. The NEA
will make awards to support research on
how art works. The NEA distinguishes
between research projects seeking to
define value for the U.S. arts sector, and
those seeking to demonstrate the arts’
impact on American life. Value-oriented
research will measure or otherwise clarify
one or more components of how Americans participate in the arts. Separately,
research on impact will investigate the
direct benefits of arts participation on
individuals and/or communities. The
NEA also will consider strong research
proposals measuring the effects of arts
participation on broader-level outcomes,
such as new forms of self-expression,
new outlets for creative activity, and the
overall creative and expressive capacity
of U.S. society. 2013NEAORA (GG 8/1/

34-9 Program in Ultrafast Laser
Science and Engineering (PULSE)
(DARPA)
The Program in Ultrafast Laser Science
and Engineering (PULSE) seeks to enable
efficient and agile use of the entire electromagnetic spectrum by linking it to the
output of an ultrafast laser. The expected
outcome of the program is to develop
novel sources of radiation that improve
upon existing state-of-the-art performance, size, weight, and power. In particular, PULSE aims to develop devices and
techniques that will result in low phasenoise microwave oscillators, practical
optical time/frequency transfer techniques, tabletop sources of high-quality
secondary radiation and high flux isolated
attosecond pulses, and other DOD-relevant applications. DARPA-BAA-12-63

HEALTH & LIFE SCIENCES
34-11 TaRGET 1: Chromatin
Structure, Genomics, and
Transcriptional Responses to the
Environment (R01) (NIH)
In order to understand the mechanisms by
which toxicants impact gene expression,
it is necessary to better understand how
exposure affects the proteins and processes upstream of DNA methylation and
other epigenetic marks. The NIEHS has
made a significant investment in research
aimed at identifying epigenetic signatures
of exposure, but the mechanistic studies
aimed at identifying how these epigenetic
marks are established are currently underrepresented in our portfolio. The purpose
of this FOA is to encourage research
applications that will potentially move the
field from descriptive and correlative
studies to an enhanced mechanistic understanding of how environmental exposures
affect the proteins and functional genomic
elements involved in establishing and
maintaining gene expression patterns and
chromatin states. RFA-ES-12-008 (NIHG

to help ensure the vitality and diversity of
the scientific and engineering workforce
in the United States. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate
students who are pursuing research-based
master’s and doctoral degrees in fields
within NSF’s mission. The GRFP provides three years of support for the graduate education of individuals who have
demonstrated their potential for significant achievements in science and engineering research. Applicants must be
United States citizens, nationals, or permanent residents of the United States by
the application deadline and have completed no more than 12 months of fulltime graduate study by August 1, 2012.
For students interested in applying, Jim
Hohenbary, Assistant Dean for Nationally
Competitive Scholarships at K-State, will
hold Information Meetings on September
20 and 21 at 3:30 in Student Union 226.
