8-2 ENGAGE: Learning to Solve
Problems, Solving Problems to Learn
(DARPA)
DARPA is soliciting proposals for innovative research in educational systems that
will ENGAGE young students (Pre-K—
Grade 3) in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) studies
while conducting research into the best
methods and practices for teaching these
topics. Specifically, an educational gamebased approach is being sought that will
analyze game-play across thousands of
players to determine the best approaches
for teaching specific STEM topics while
taking into account individual learning
styles, demographics and other factors
identified by the game to impact learning.
These educational games must meet the

highest industry standards for quality and
engagement while incorporating the best
pedagogical practices and clearly focusing on the ability to measure and identify
metrics critical to teaching STEM topics,
as well as to see if the lessons learned
within the game generalize to the classroom. DARPA-BAA-11-36 (GG 2/25/

This announcement seeks innovative
approaches to the development of GNSS
remote sensing techniques and algorithms
to study the Earth’s environment from the
ionosphere to Earth’s interior in accord
with NASA’s strategic goals and objectives. In addition to the factors given in
the NASA Guidebook for Proposers, the
evaluation criterion “relevance to NASA’s
strategic goals and objectives” specifically includes the following factor: The
value to NASA strategic objectives in
Earth Science including multidisciplinary
science objects in space geodesy, geohazards mitigation, gravity, and geomagnetic
field dynamics as articulated in the Earth
Surface and Interior’s strategic plan entitled “Living on a Restless Planet.” Proposals should focus on upon the

8-11 Special Call for Proposals by the
HEALTH & LIFE SCIENCES
8-12 Dimensions of Biodiversity
(NSF)
The goal of the Dimensions of Biodiversity campaign is to transform, by 2020,
how we describe and understand the
scope and role of life on Earth. The campaign promotes novel, integrated
approaches to identify and understand the
evolutionary and ecological significance
of biodiversity amidst the changing environment of the present day and in the geologic past. This campaign seeks to
characterize biodiversity on Earth by
using integrative, innovative approaches
to fill the most substantial gaps in our
understanding of the diversity of life on
Earth. It will take a broad view of biodiversity, and in its initial phase will focus
on the integration of genetic, taxonomic,
and functional dimensions of biodiversity.
Successful proposals should integrate
these three dimensions to understand
interactions and feedbacks among them.
An individual may appear on Principal
Investigator (PI), or co-PI, or other senior
personnel on only one proposal submitted
in FY 2011 in response to this solicitation.

8-13 Advanced Seminar Program
(SAR)
Advanced seminars at the School for
Advanced Research (SAR) promote indepth communication among scholars
who are at a critical stage of research on a
common topic and whose interaction has
the potential to move the discipline of
anthropology forward with new insights
into human evolution, behavior, culture,
or society, including critical contemporary issues. Each consists of ten scholars
who meet at SAR’s Santa Fe campus for
five days of intense discussion. Participants appraise ongoing research, assess
recent innovations in theory and methods,
and share data relevant to the broad problems in anthropology and related disciplines.
