Limited Submissions
Limited submission programs have
sponsor restrictions on the number of
proposals that may be submitted by a
single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which
applications will be submitted. Dr. Jim
Guikema, Associate Vice President for
Research, is the internal coordinator for
limited submission programs. Please
notify him at 785-532-6195, email:
guikema@ksu.edu, by the Internal due

46-3 Healthy Homes Technical
Studies Program (HUD)
The overall goal of the Healthy Homes
Technical Studies program is to gain
knowledge to improve the efficacy and
cost-effectiveness of methods for the
evaluation and control of housing related
health and safety hazards. The overall
goals and objectives of the Healthy
Homes (HH) Program are to:1) Mobilize
public and private resources, involving
cooperation among all levels of government, the private sector, grassroots community-based organizations, including
faith-based organizations, and other nonprofit organizations, to develop and
implement the most promising, costeffective methods for identifying and
controlling housing-related hazards; and
2) Build local capacity to operate sustainable programs that will continue to
prevent, minimize, and control housingrelated hazards in low- and very lowincome residences when HUD funding is
exhausted. FR-5600-n-27 (GG 11/30/11)

46-4 Living with a Star Targeted
Research and Technology (NASA)
The goal of NASA’s Living With a Star
(LWS) Program is to develop the scientific understanding needed for the United
States to effectively address those
aspects of Heliophysics science that may
affect life and society. The LWS Targeted
Research and Technology (TR&T) program element solicits proposals leading
to a physics-based understanding of the
integral system linking the Sun to the
Solar System including the impact on the
heliosphere, planetary magnetospheres,
and ionospheres. The TR&T program’s
objectives can be achieved by data analysis, theory, and modeling, and the development of tools and methods (e.g.,

The Department of Defense’s Strategic
Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) is seeking to
fund environmental research and development proposals. SERDP is DoD’s environmental science and technology
program, planned and executed in partnership with DOE and EPA, with participation by numerous other Federal and
non-Federal organizations. The Program
invests across the broad spectrum of basic
and applied research, as well as advanced
development. The development and
application of innovative environmental
technologies will reduce the costs, environmental risks, and time required to
resolve environmental problems while, at
the same time, enhancing and sustaining
military readiness. Proposals responding
to focused Statements of Need (SON) in
the following areas are requested: Environmental Restoration- Research and
technologies for the characterization, risk
assessment, remediation, and management of contaminants in soil, sediments,
and water. Munitions Response- Technologies for the detection, classification, and
remediation of military munitions on U.S.
lands and water. Resource Conservation
and Climate Change- Research that
advances DoD’s management of its natural and cultural resources and improves
understanding of climate change impacts.
Weapons Systems and PlatformsResearch and technologies to reduce, control, and understand the sources of waste
and emissions in the manufacturing,
maintenance, and use of weapons systems

46-7 Small Grants Program for
Cancer Epidemiology (R03) (NCI)
This funding opportunity announcement
(FOA), issued by the National Cancer
Institute (NCI), encourages the submission of Small Research Grant (R03) applications for research on cancer etiology
and epidemiology. The overarching goal
of this FOA is to provide support for pilot
projects, testing of new techniques, secondary analyses of existing data, development and validation of measurement
methods, linkage of genetic polymorphisms with other variables related to
cancer risk, and development of innovative projects for more comprehensive
research in cancer etiology and epidemiology. PAR-12-039 (NIHG 12/2/11)

46-8 NIDDK Education Program
Grants (R25) (NIDDK)
This funding opportunity announcement
(FOA) encourages Research Education
(R25) grant applications from applicant
organizations that propose to create educational opportunities for undergraduate
students, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows in areas of biomedical or
behavioral research of particular interest
to the NIDDK, while fostering the career
development of these students and fellows. The structure of the educational
opportunity can include an intensive summer research program, a curriculumbased program or a combination of both
experiences. The NIDDK is especially
interested in attracting students and postdoctoral fellows from scientific disciplines underrepresented in diseaseoriented biomedical research, such as
engineering, informatics, computer science, and computational sciences, to
encourage them to apply their expertise to
research relevant to diabetes and other
endocrine and metabolic diseases; digestive and liver diseases; nutrition; obesity
research and prevention; and kidney, urologic and hematologic diseases. PAR-12047 (NIHG 12/2/11)

46-10 Exceptionally Innovative Tools
and Technologies for Single Cell
Analysis (R21) (NIH)
This Funding Opportunity Announcement
(FOA) issued by the National Institutes of
Health, solicits early stage, high-risk/
high-impact applications to develop nextgeneration tools that distinguish heterogeneous states among cells in situ. Applications should define the current state of
technology as a benchmark against which
the new tool(s) will be measured and
should propose proof-of-concept testing
of the tool(s) in a complex biological tissue or living organism. The new tools
should provide substantially increased
sensitivity, selectivity, spatiotemporal resolution, scalability or non-destructive
analysis of multiple global or functional
measures of single cells. RFA-RM-11014 (NIHG 11/23/11)

Testing in Human Health and Disease
(UH2/UH3) (NIH)
This NIH Funding Opportunity
Announcement (FOA), supported by
funds from the NIH Common Fund and
participating NIH Institute(s) and Center(s), invites applications for projects
that will develop accurate cellular and
organ microsystems representative of
human physiology for the evaluation of
drug efficacy and toxicity. By definition,
these cellular and organ microsystems
will have a multicellular architecture representing the characteristics and functions
of the tissue of origin and will demonstrate a reproducible and viable operation

Metabolomics Resource Cores
(RCMRC) (U24) (NIH)
46-12 Activities that Reduce Global
Anthropogenic Methane Emissions
(EPA)
This FOA invites cooperative agreement
applications to establish Regional Comprehensive Metablomics Resource Cores
(RCMRC) to increase the national capacity for utilizing metabolomics in biomedical research. To facilitate the biological
and clinical application of metabolomics,
This notice announces the availability of
funds and solicits proposals for investigation, survey, study, training, and demonstration projects that advance
international near-term, cost-effective
methane abatement and/or recovery and
use as a clean energy source, and support
the goals of the Global Methane Initiative. This funding opportunity is only for
international activities in support of the
Global Methane Initiative. Benefits to the
U.S. will result from the mitigation in climate change emissions and the potential
use of U.S. technologies and services in
projects around the world. EPA-OARCCD-11-11 (GG 11/30/11)

SOCIAL SCIENCES
46-13 Law & Social Sciences (LSS)
(NSF)
The Law & Social Sciences Program considers proposals that address social scientific studies of law and law-like systems
of rules. The program is inherently interdisciplinary and multi-methodological.
Successful proposals describe research
that advances scientific theory and understanding of the connections between law
or legal processes and human behavior.
Social scientific studies of law often
approach law as dynamic, made in multiple arenas, with the participation of multiple actors. Fields of study include many
disciplines, and often address problems
including though not limited to: 1)Crime,
Violence and Punishment; 2) Economic
Issues; 3) Governance; 4) Legal Decisionmaking; 5) Legal Mobilization and Conceptions of Justice; and 6) Litigation and
the Legal Profession. LSS provides the
following modes of support: 1) Standard
Research Grants and Grants for Collaborative Research; 2) Doctoral Dissertation
Research Improvement Grants; 3) Interdisciplinary Postdoctoral Fellowships;
and 4) Workshop and Conference Proposals. NSF 12-507
