Limited Submissions Limited submission programs have sponsor restrictions on the number of proposals that may be submitted by a single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which applications will be submitted. Dr. Jim Guikema, Associate Vice Provost for Research, is the internal coordinator for limited submission programs. Please notify him at 785-532-6195, email: guikema@ksu.edu, by the Internal due date listed in the Funding Bulletin or by at least two months prior to the sponsor deadline if you wish to submit to a limited submission program. Currently posted Internal Deadlines: http://www.kstate.edu/research/funding/bulletins/ bul07/newlimits.htm GENERAL 1-1 Paleo Perspectives on Climate Change (P2C2) (NSF) The goal of research funded under the interdisciplinary P2C2 solicitation is to utilize key geological, chemical, and biological records of climate system variability to provide insights into the mechanisms and rate of change that characterized Earth’s past climate variability, the sensitivity of Earth’s climate system to changes in forcing, and the response of key components of the Earth system to these changes. Important scientific objectives of P2C2 are to: 1) provide comprehensive paleoclimate data sets that can serve as model test data sets analogous to instrumental observations; and 2) enable transformative syntheses of paleoclimate data and modeling outcomes to understand the response of the longer-term and higher magnitude variability of the climate system that is observed in the geological record. Ecological Genomics seeks to understand the genetic mechanisms that underlie responses of organisms to their natural environment. This initiative will support interdisciplinary research that combines genomic and ecological approaches. Priority for funding will be given to those applications that show promise of attracting extramural funds. Potential applicants should visit the KSU Ecological Genomics website, www.ksu.edu/ecogen, to gain a better understanding of the scope of the program. These grants may fund research by new and established KSU faculty. Funding for these seed grants has been made possible through the support from Targeted Excellence. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, a partner in the BDJV, administers grants and purchase orders on a competitive basis for projects/studies that advance both our and the general scientific community’s understanding of Black Duck biology and ecology and is seeking proposals from interested parties. In Fiscal Year 2008 the BDJV is particularly interested in proposal addressing questions about the apparent decline in black duck productivity and projects linking black duck vital rates to habitat features. In addition, information in the form of electronic text is becoming increasingly available. Unfortunately, today’s formal reasoning systems cannot operate with a textual input. Thus, the purpose of this RFI is to explore general purpose bridges between the corpus of electronic text and formal reasoning systems. The ability to perform a deep-level semantic analysis on the enormous available body of human knowledge that is available electronically would provide significant advantages in heightening situation awareness and recognizing and responding to asymmetric threats. Thus, capturing natural text as formal knowledge would, by itself, constitute a fundamental advancement that would afford extensive military benefits. The information Process Technology Office (IPTO), Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) requests information in the following area: Automated systems that accept natural language (English) text as input and provides some kind of formal, usable output.
