Limited Submissions
Limited submission programs have
sponsor restrictions on the number of
proposals that may be submitted by a
single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which
applications will be submitted. Dr. Jim
Guikema, Associate Vice Provost for
Research, is the internal coordinator for
limited submission programs. Please
notify him at 785-532-6195, email:
guikema@ksu.edu, by the Internal due
date listed in the Funding Bulletin or by
at least two months prior to the sponsor
deadline if you wish to submit to a limited submission program. Currently

GENERAL
1-1 Paleo Perspectives on Climate
Change (P2C2) (NSF)
The goal of research funded under the
interdisciplinary P2C2 solicitation is to
utilize key geological, chemical, and biological records of climate system variability to provide insights into the mechanisms
and rate of change that characterized
Earth’s past climate variability, the sensitivity of Earth’s climate system to changes
in forcing, and the response of key components of the Earth system to these changes.
Important scientific objectives of P2C2 are
to: 1) provide comprehensive paleoclimate
data sets that can serve as model test data
sets analogous to instrumental observations; and 2) enable transformative syntheses of paleoclimate data and modeling
outcomes to understand the response of the
longer-term and higher magnitude variability of the climate system that is
observed in the geological record. NSF 08505 (Posted 11/6/07)

The announcement of this research
opportunity represents a critical step in
moving effective interventions into practice to ultimately save the lives of teen
drivers and their passengers. The purpose
of this announcement is to solicit applications to conduct translation research to
understand the best ways to promote the
widespread adoption and institutionalization of evidence-based teen driving interventions. RFA-CE-08-004 (NIHG 12/21/

Violence and Violence-Related Injury
(R01) (CDC)
The National Center for Injury Prevention and Control is soliciting investigator-initiated research that will help
expand and advance our understanding
of violence, its causes, and prevention
strategies. The following research objectives are the focus of this solicitation: 1)

1-4 KSU Ecological Genomics
Institute Seed Grant RFP (KSU)
The KSU Ecological Genomics Institute
invites research proposals from scientists
at Kansas State University for seed
grants ranging up to $75,000 over a twoyear period. Ecological Genomics seeks
to understand the genetic mechanisms
that underlie responses of organisms to
their natural environment. This initiative
will support interdisciplinary research
that combines genomic and ecological
approaches. Priority for funding will be
given to those applications that show
promise of attracting extramural funds.
Potential applicants should visit the KSU
Ecological Genomics website,
www.ksu.edu/ecogen, to gain a better
understanding of the scope of the program. These grants may fund research by
new and established KSU faculty. Funding for these seed grants has been made
possible through the support from Targeted Excellence.

1-5 Black Duck FY08 Competitive
Grant Program (DOI)
The Black Duck Joint Venture (BDJV) is
a partnership-based conservation program
under the North American Waterfowl
Management Plan that promotes the conservation of Black Ducks by providing
greater knowledge for effective management. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,
a partner in the BDJV, administers grants
and purchase orders on a competitive
basis for projects/studies that advance
both our and the general scientific community’s understanding of Black Duck
biology and ecology and is seeking proposals from interested parties. In Fiscal
Year 2008 the BDJV is particularly interested in proposal addressing questions
about the apparent decline in black duck
productivity and projects linking black
duck vital rates to habitat features. GG

located in Princeton, WV, is accepting
applications for cost-share demonstrations projects that assist the WERC in
meeting its mission of facilitating interaction and information exchange with the
forest products industry that will enhance
opportunities for sustained forest products

EDUCATION
1-7 Early Reading First Program
(ED)
This program supports local efforts to
enhance the oral language, cognitive, and
early reading skills of preschool-aged
children, especially those from lowincome families, through strategies, materials, and professional development that
are grounded in scientifically based reading research. The Secretary is especially
interested in preschools programs that
operate full-time, full-year early childhood educational programs, at a minimum of 6.5 hours per day, 5 days per
week, 46 weeks per year, and that serve
children for the two consecutive years
prior to their entry into kindergarten. For
applicants serving children with limited
English proficiency, the Secretary is especially interested in applications that

ENGINEERING, MATHEMATICS
& PHYSICAL SCIENCES
1-8 Learning By Reading (LBR)
(DOD)
Today we have systems with extensive
formal reasoning capabilities. In addition,
information in the form of electronic text
is becoming increasingly available.
Unfortunately, today’s formal reasoning
systems cannot operate with a textual
input. Thus, the purpose of this RFI is to
explore general purpose bridges between
the corpus of electronic text and formal
reasoning systems. The ability to perform
a deep-level semantic analysis on the
enormous available body of human
knowledge that is available electronically
would provide significant advantages in
heightening situation awareness and recognizing and responding to asymmetric
threats. Thus, capturing natural text as
formal knowledge would, by itself, constitute a fundamental advancement that
would afford extensive military benefits.
The information Process Technology
Office (IPTO), Defense Advanced
Research Projects Agency (DARPA)
requests information in the following
area: Automated systems that accept natural language (English) text as input and
provides some kind of formal, usable output. RFI-08-11 (FBO 11/26/07)

The National Institute of Standards and
Technology (NIST) announces that the
Precision Measurement Grants Program
is soliciting applications for financial
assistance for Fiscal Year (FY) 2008. The
Precision Measurement Grants Program
is seeking proposals for significant

1-11 Moon and Mars Analog Mission
Activities (NASA)
NASA Analog Missions research
addresses the need for integrated interdisciplinary field experiments as an integral
part of preparation for planned human and
robotic missions to the Moon and Mars.
The focus of this program will be on providing real scientific investigations, scientific input, and science operations
constraints in the context of existing
large-scale technology development and
testing activities being carried out by the
Exploration Systems Mission Directorate.
Funding provided in this program element
is intended to supplement existing funded
projects to enable researchers to integrate
their instruments, projects, and/or protocols into field activities designed to help
NASA achieve the Vision for Space
Exploration. NNH07ZDA001N

1-14 Predoctoral and Postdoctoral
Fellowships in International Security
(CISAC)
CISAC’s pre- and postdoctoral fellowships provide opportunities for concentrated study in a multidisciplinary
environment. The center, part of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International
Studies at Stanford University, serves as a
collegial forum for scholars, government
officials, military officers, and business
leaders to explore innovative solutions to
complex international problems. Visiting
fellows spend the academic year at Stanford University, where they will participate in seminars, interact with each other
and faculty and researchers, and will be
expected to produce a research product
(e.g., dissertation chapters, draft articles,
a book manuscript). The center considers
applicants working within a broad range
of topics related to peace and international security.
