Competitive Grants (USDA)
CSREES requests applications for the
NRI Program for FY 2008 to support: 1)
high priority fundamental and missionlinked research of importance in the biological, environmental, physical, and
social sciences relevant to agriculture,
food, the environment, and rural communities and 2) competitively awarded
research, extension, and education grants
addressing key issues of national and
regional importance to agriculture, forestry, and related topics. Deadlines vary

University Small Research Grants and
Faculty Development Awards are offered
through the Office of Research & Sponsored Programs each Fall and Spring
semester. The Fall competition deadline is
October 1, 2007 for funding to be used
before July 1, 2008. A Question and
Answer Session is scheduled for Thursday,
September 20, 3:00 p.m. in Room 213, KState Union. New faculty are particularly
encouraged to attend.

Earthwatch Institute is an international non
profit organization that supports scholarly
field research worldwide in the biological,
physical, social, and cultural sciences.
Earthwatch provides scientists with the
funding and labor they need in the form of
motivated, dedicated, paying volunteers.
This unique funding model enables them
to support research in a variety of disciplines, on the basis of a researcher’s need
for volunteers and Earthwatch’s ability to
35-4 KS Wheat Commission Grants
(KWC)
The Kansas Wheat Commission and the
Kansas Association of Wheat Growers
have developed a new strategic plan entitled Kansas Wheat: Profitability through
Innovation. The plan is a new approach
at enhancing demand for wheat. Consider the following three goals of this
plan when submitting your research proposals: Focus research by selecting
research initiatives that support the
industry’s ability to gain and sustain market share profitability in both domestic
and international markets; Educate Kansas wheat producers to adopt technologies that are shown by research and
development to be profitable; and Cooperate with the wheat supply chain to
adopt and implement technologies and
innovations that support the profitability
of Kansas wheat producers.

35-5 Museums for America (IMLS)
This is a cornerstone program for the
Institute of Museum and Library Ser-
vices, providing support for essential and
worthy projects that help museums further their missions, achieve their goals,
and provide value to their communities.
Museums for America grants benefit
museums of all sizes and types, in all
parts of the country. Through three new,
broad categories—Engaging Communities, Building Institutional Capacity, and
Collections Stewardship—these grants
provide funds for the full range of
museum programs and activities, including digitization, staff training, research,
exhibitions, educational programs, community partnerships and collections management. Eligible museums include
aquariums, arboretums and botanical gardens, art museums, youth museums, general museums, historic houses, and sites,
history museums, nature centers, natural
history and anthropology museums, planetariums, science and technology centers,
specialized museums, and zoological

35-6 Rome Prize Fellowships (AAR)
Established in 1984 and chartered by an
Act of Congress in 1905, the American
Academy in Rome is a center that sustains
independent artistic pursuits and humanistic studies. Each year, through a national
competition, the Rome Prize is awarded
to 15 emerging artists (working in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Design,
Historic Preservation and Conservation,
Literature, Musical Composition, Visual
Arts) and 15 scholars (working in
Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance and early
Modern, or Modern Italian Studies).
Rome Prize fellowships are designed for
emerging artists and for scholars in the
early or middle stages of their careers. In
the case of scholars, preference will be
given to applicants for whom research
time in Italy, and especially in the city of
Rome, is essential, and who have not had
extensive prior experience there.

(Heartland)
Heartland Works is issuing a Request for
Proposals for Work-Based Learning PilotProjects for eligible youth under Title I of
the Workforce Investment Act (WIA-U.S.
Dept. of Labor funding). Heartland Works
is seeking providers of year-round youth
activities throughout all 17 counties of
Local Area II (Atchison, Brown, Clay,
Doniphan, Douglas, Franklin, Geary,
Jackson, Jefferson, Marshall, Nemaha,
Osage, Pottawatomie, Riley, Shawnee,
Wabaunsee and Washington). They wish
to contract for employer-driven youth
development programs using the WorkBased Learning Model. Heartland Works
is looking for innovative providers who
can meet the requirements and demands
of a year-round program. Awarded bidders will provide services to eligible inschool youth as well as out-of-school
youth between the ages of 16-21.

Program (DOE)
The Office of Nuclear Physics of the
Office of Science (SC), U.S. Department
of Energy (DOE), invites grant applications for support under the Outstanding
Junior Investigator (OJI) Program in
nuclear physics. The purpose of this program is to support the development of
individual research programs of outstanding scientists early in their careers. Applications should be from tenure-track
faculty who are currently involved in
experimental or theoretical nuclear physics research, the U.S. Nuclear Data Program (USNDP) or accelerator physics
research related to nuclear physics
projects, and should be submitted through
a U.S. academic institution. Applications
must be no more that ten (10) years
beyond the Ph.D. at the deadline for the

The Terry C. Johnson Center for Basic
Cancer Research at K-State strives to support and enhance cancer-related research
and training at K-State. Scientists performing cancer-relevant research are
invited to become affiliated scientists and
apply for various cancer center awards.
Innovative Research Awards provide seed
money to gather preliminary data crucial
for future major grant proposals. Faculty
Equipment Awards provide funds for new
equipment. Travel Awards are provided in
modest amounts to affiliates who wish to
travel to learn new scientific techniques
or visit collaborators at other institutions.

35-14 Awards for Undergraduate and
Graduate Students and Post-Doctoral
Fellows for Cancer-Relevant Research,
Training, and Travel (KSU)
The Terry C. Johnson Center for Basic
Cancer Research at K-State supports students and post-doctoral fellows wishing
to participate in cancer-related laboratory
research. Undergraduate students are
encouraged to apply along with a cancer
center-affiliated faculty scientist for a
Cancer Research Award. Student winners
work in their mentors’ laboratories in the
spring and then receive $1,000. Mentors
also receive $1,000 per student for
research expenses. Graduate students and
post-doctoral fellows working with affiliated scientists may apply via their faculty
mentors for Travel Awards to support
travel to professional meetings or workshops.
