Republican Candidate for Governor, Nebraska — 2013-May 2014
The campaign focused on bringing business principles and process improvement
capabilities to capture Nebraska’s economic and population growth opportunities.
Key elements of the platform included reforming the state tax code, creating more
accountability and transparency in government spending, expanding the impact and
efficiency of the University of Nebraska throughout the state, and making strategic
investments in infrastructure.
Managing Partner, Deloitte, Omaha, Nebraska — 2007-2013
Responsible for leading and managing the marketplace activities for the largest
accounting, tax and consulting firm in the state. Personally served large corporate
and tax exempt organizations with a particular focus on bringing best practices to
executive and board level processes, as well as managing rapid regulatory change.
In my leadership role, was active in the development of local, regional, and even
national firm strategies related to the successful recruiting, training, and retention of
skilled talent.
Partner, Deloitte, Omaha, Nebraska — 1997-2013
Provided tax, risk management, corporate transaction, international structuring, and
other consulting advice to domestic and multinational companies. Was a national
resource for the firm in tax dispute resolution and tax risk management. Served a
number of industries including financial services, manufacturing, transportation, food
and agriculture, healthcare, and consumer products. From 2002-2007, I led the
firm’s national federal tax dispute resolution practice.
Partner, Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering, Washington D.C and Berlin, Germany —
1992-1997
As an attorney with a prominent Washington D.C. law firm, I served domestic and
international clients in legal matters related to international dispute resolution,
taxation, bankruptcy, exempt organizations, and corporate transactions. In 1993, I
was a co-founding partner of the first U.S. law firm office in the former East Berlin,
following the unification of Germany. While there, I was engaged in a global
corporate and tax practice in Asia, Europe, and the United States.

Attorney, Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering, Washington D.C — 1989-1992
Provided corporate clients and large non-profit organizations with legal advice in the
areas of federal income tax, tax policy, international transfer pricing, exempt
organizations, mergers and acquisitions, and bankruptcy taxation.
Assistant to the Commissioner (Legislative Liaison), Internal Revenue
Service, Washington D.C. — 1987-1988
For the last two years of President Reagan’s administration, I was a personal legal
advisor to the IRS Commissioner and also had responsibility for Congressional
relations as Legislative Liaison. Coordinated congressional communications on tax
administration matters including the implementation of the Tax Reform Act of 1986,
the Taxpayer Bill of Rights, and matters before Congressional oversight committees.
Prepared testimony and assisted the IRS Commissioner with dozens of
Congressional hearings each year. Was given the Commissioner’s Award, the
highest award that is given an IRS employee.
Ways & Means Tax Counsel to Congressman Hal Daub, U.S. House of
Representatives, Washington D.C. 1985-1986
Analyzed tax legislation, provided tax counsel, drafted legislation, attended
committee hearings, and served as Tax Counsel to Congressman Hal Daub, a
member of the House Ways and Means Committee, during consideration of the Tax
Reform Act of 1986.
Tax Consultant, Touche Ross & Co., Lincoln, NE — 1983-1984
Provided tax consulting services to private businesses including the preparation of
IRS ruling requests, tax planning, tax return preparation, and IRS examination
representation.
