Job opportunities and preceptorships in northern California Mike Cline, a veterinary medical association representative, will be visiting our College on April 23 to talk about job opportunities and preceptorships. He represents two northern California veterinary medical associations covering a territory from Gridley/Marysville (about 60 miles north of Sacramento) to the Oregon border, and from Nevada to the west coast. Within this territory there are numerous privately owned practices offering new preceptorships and even more practices in need of doctors. Several of these practices would be open to externships with the possibility of a small stipend. They have a diverse area represented with opportunities available in almost every medical discipline. Prospects lie in larger cities to very rural areas, as well as in the mountains, central valley, and on the coast. Mr. Cline will be providing pizza at noon on April 23, in Magruder Hall 102. He will give a short power point presentation and a talk, after which he will be available to answer questions and provide information for preceptorship and employment opportunities. Making dreams come true Senior veterinary student Dan Lewer has been following his dream of working with marine mammals long before being admitted to veterinary school. He has spent time in Jamaica doing research in marine biology, tagged blue and humpback whales in Chile, studied sperm whales in the Gulf of Mexico, and been up and down the west coast of North America in pursuit of blue, humpback, grey and fin whales. Several of the expeditions Dan has been on have been filmed by National Geographic and Animal Planet. When he graduates from our College of Veterinary Medicine this June he will realize his dream of becoming a veterinarian, after which he has been invited to apply for a position at a major aquarium. Follow this link to see pictures of Dan working with marine mammals at the Oregon Zoo, http://gustavus.edu/quarterly/ files/current.pdf. You can find him and a short article on page 53. Jan Keen retirement official Although I will continue to work until June 30, I guess I am officially retired as of today! Yippee! A couple weeks ago when asked what my plans were after June 30, my answer was that I wanted to “sleep until I wake up – without an alarm clock.” But then my oldest daughter informed me that she had other plans for my retirement – babysitting for five weeks while her regular babysitter takes time off. So I am happily going to spend time with my 6-year-old granddaughter, Courtney, and 1-year-old grandson, Cameron. Sometime soon after that, my plan is to travel to Savannah, Georgia, to see my son, an Army Ranger just returning from his fourth tour of duty in Iraq, and to finally meet my 1-year-old granddaughter, Emma Marie. After that, who knows…but I am looking forward to the next chapter. A great big ‘Thank You’ to everyone in the College of Veterinary Medicine for the fond memories and the lifetime of friendships made during the past 31 years! Are your assets covered? Dr. Randy Johnson from AVMA-PLIT will be here on Friday, April 11 to discuss the importance of professional liability insurance with all interested students and faculty members. As a previous insurance professional myself, I highly recommend that you become educated on this subject! Not all insurance policies or insurance companies are created equal – you need to find what fits your priorities and risk situation. If you have any questions about professional liability or business insurance, please feel free to ask me. Please join us for insurance education and pizza from 12:00 – 1:00 in room 102. Please RSVP so that I can order enough pizza for everyone. Kathleen Hanifen AVMA – PLIT rep Class of 2010
