The course will focus on the problems of keeping IT systems secure from error or abuse, whether internal or external, and will examine how controls can be designed, within the systems and around them, to achieve their optimum security and integrity. The following are the principal topics that will be covered during the course: Target Audience Fundamentals of Information Technology The IS Audit Practitioner The IT Systems Control Environment • Auditors of information systems who want to refresh and update their knowledge of computer auditing procedures • Accountants in business and in private practice • Business executives using computerised information systems • IT practitioners involved in the development of business information systems • Students aspiring to any of the above-mentioned professions. The Development of Information Systems and Control Objectives Internal Controls and Security in IS Computer Crime Security in Telecommunications Computer Assisted Auditing Techniques A View of Computerised Accounting Systems Issues of Systems Integration Lecturer A number of case studies will also be presented in order to enable students to apply their learning to practical situations. George Cassola has recently retired from the post of Head of Finance with APS Bank, following a career of 40 years’ service in public and private organizations. He graduated as an accountant from the University of Malta and was trained in IT in London. He worked for the Inland Revenue Department, the Government Computer Centre, Joseph Tabone & Co (now KPMG), ETC and APS Bank, doing systems development, IT management, general and computer audit and consultancy, financial control, management accounting, etc. He has been lecturing in Computer Audit at the University since 1988.
