Overall Course Objectives
Course Content
The aim of the course is to show participants, who are directly or indirectly
involved in the running of business information systems, why, how, and what
security controls need to be adopted in those systems in order to safeguard the
security and integrity of their data and other computer assets, and to meet the
increasing stringency of legal and audit requirements.
The course will focus on the problems of keeping IT systems secure from error or
abuse, whether internal or external, and will examine how controls can be designed,
within the systems and around them, to achieve their optimum security and integrity.
The following are the principal topics that will be covered during the course:

A number of case studies will also be presented in order to enable students to
apply their learning to practical situations.
George Cassola has recently retired from the post of Head of Finance with APS
Bank, following a career of 40 years’ service in public and private organizations.
He graduated as an accountant from the University of Malta and was trained in
IT in London. He worked for the Inland Revenue Department, the Government
Computer Centre, Joseph Tabone & Co (now KPMG), ETC and APS Bank, doing
systems development, IT management, general and computer audit and
consultancy, financial control, management accounting, etc. He has been
lecturing in Computer Audit at the University since 1988.
Duration: 30hrs (10 sessions x 3 hrs each)
