Apologies: Yoko Aldous, Roberto D’Onofrio, Fernando Gracia Garcia, Dr. So Hiranuma, Ariane Smart and Cristina Testi. 1 . Welcome back Welcome: • Christine Hoffmann welcomed all back from summer break and went through the schedule for the next two weeks; • Teams to tie up any loose ends from the last academic year by this Wednesday, when we have Course Unit team meetings; Course Unit Registration Information: • All tutors are expected to help with Registration / Orientation week preparation and distribute registration information to UCL Departments next week. 2 . Summer Activities New Courses: • The new Academic Purposes course units have been approved by External Examiners, the Faculty and by Registry – the courses, including their descriptions are all now on Portico; Student Guidelines: • The new Guidelines will be delivered next week; the main change is that 0EAW / LCEN6801 (English 0.5 Course unit) is now included in it; English courses: • The Academic Writing in English 0.5 Course Unit will have timetabling sessions like all other Course Units; • Undergraduate Writing (fee-paying English course): this will now be dealt with through the EAP office; Self Access Centre: • New computers and wider desks have been installed; there will also be computers in Course Unit Teaching Committee Meeting 11 September 2006 the Language Laboratory. 3 . Academic Year 2006-2007 Christine Hoffmann explained any changes/updates for the coming year: Registration: • Students will be able to select module options on Portico from Monday 18 September (a description of each course is on Portico), but Parent Department and we as Teaching Department still need to approve selections; • students must still come to the Language Centre to see us during Registration weeks; Affiliate students: • We will now offer one term (Term 2) courses to those affiliate students who are only here for one term, particularly those from USA, however: - they must be able to show / give evidence that they have seriously studied the language before up to an appropriate level – ideally at their home institution during our Term one; - we will give them the Grammar & Vocabulary assessment as an progress / entry test – they will then complete all other coursework/exams as normal (they may need some extra assistance with Project preparation; - they must be Level 3 upwards, no beginners; - they must join at the start of Term two only – so existing classes will gain more students in Term two; - they will obtain half the credit – if joining a 1.0 unit they receive 0.5 credit, if joining a 0.5 unit they receive 0.25 credit; Academic Reading Courses: • the History Department would like their MA students to take our Academic Reading Courses for credit towards their MA/MSc courses - mainly French and German - so we will need to write an exam for this; New course: • From 2007 there will be another course: University Preparatory Certificate for Arts and Humanities & Social Science – there will be different strands within the course e.g. Maths, Introduction to Economy, Language Culture & Society, Modern History. However the students will take our language courses – our Academic Purposes course may be relevant. This will be a good opportunity to collaborate between the FAH, Course units and EAP teams. 4 . Course unit website • The Course Unit microsite is now using the UCL Content Management Service (CMS); one of the benefits is that it will be easier for tutors to upload their own material. There will be areas for each team and for each tutor. Much of the content has access restricted to UCL staff and students; access is with a UCL IS password. Unfortunately intercollegiate students will not be issued with UCL IS accounts, as was previously indicated, so alternative arrangements will have to be made for those students to access the material. 5 . Any other business IQR: • There will be an Audit taking place at the beginning of March next year; Continuing Professional Development: • All tutors asked to complete and return their personal staff profiles forms showing anything they have done (e.g. workshops) to Madeleine by 22 September; Meetings: • Next year’s Course Unit meeting schedule will be distributed next week; • The June Course Unit Review Meeting minutes will be distributed this week; • Marion Sadoux will not be teaching during Term 1, she will return in Term 2 and will take over Marie-Laure Aris’s classes.
