BACHELOR OF COMMERCE (HONOURS) ECONOMICS BACHELOR OF COMMERCE MAJORING IN ECONOMICS In FEMA’s Bachelor of Commerce programme, the first year of study provides students with a wide overview of various disciplines including Sociology, Industrial Psychology, Micro and Macro-economics and Accountancy amongst others. During the second and third year of the course, students select two major areas of study. Thus, students opting for Economics as one of their majors, choose another major subject area from the list of programme specialisations namely: Accountancy, Management, Public Policy, Banking and Finance, Marketing, and Insurance. The Economics Major provides an opportunity for students to understand core areas such as Public Sector Economics, Monetary Economics, Econometrics, International Trade, and Applied Macro and Micro-Economics. The programme is further enriched by allowing students to choose elective study-units from a wide list of other subjects such as Economics of Environmental Policy, Economics of Innovation, International Finance, and Economics of Small Island States. Applicants must be in possession of a Matriculation Certificate, including an Intermediate Level pass at grade E or better in Pure Mathematics. Please visit University website for further information. WHY STUDY ECONOMICS? From poverty, to climate change from health to financial crises: the world’s most significant social and environmental problems have an economic dimension. Economics provides the tools to analyse the trade-offs that individuals, firms and governments face because of limited resources. It considers the choices that are made, the social context in which they take place and the implications for human welfare. The study of Economics is an excellent way to acquire problem-solving skills and to develop a logical, ordered way of looking at problems. Students graduating with an Honours in Economics may find a range of work opportunities within both the public and private sectors, including professional services and financial services. Students, who successfully complete Part One of the three-year B. Com. course and are placed in Category II or better in the classification for the degree, and obtain a minimum average mark of 65% in the second and third year study-units in the ‘Economics’ area of specialisation, may opt to proceed to Part Two of the Course (the fourth year) leading to the degree of Bachelor of Commerce (Honours). The programme includes the following elements: • Study-units which cover essential areas in Economics such as Game Theory, Economic Growth, Economic Risk and Uncertainty and Cost-Benefit Analysis. • A variety of elective study-units, which allow students to tailor the programme experience to individual interests such as Health Economics, Behavioural Economics, Economics of Aging and Pensions, Labour Economics, Industrial Economics, European Monetary Union and Development Economics. • A dissertation in which students pursue an empirical or theoretical study on a topic of their choice.
