The new addition to the Oregon Humane Society includes surgical and medical facilities, a dormitory for students, and office and teaching space. Fourth year students have started their two-week required rotations at OHS where they receive practical hands-on training in a variety of small animal clinical procedures including spays and neuters while under the supervision of faculty members, Drs. A gift from the Oregon Veterinary Medical Association, the coats are embroidered with the student’s name and they each received a name badge as well. There were 200 students, family, friends and faculty at the dinner to celebrate the students’ achievement of being admitted into the veterinary medicine program. More info and pictures... Governor Irwandi Yusuf Visits Magruder Hall In late September the Honorable Irwandi Yusuf, governor of the Indonesian province of Aceh, visited campus. Dr Don Mattson, retired professor of our CVM, was Governor Irwandis major professor in 1993 when he studied for his masters degree in veterinary science here at OSU. He met with Drs. Clarke and Mattson and Rocky Baker during his visit to our College. Governor Irwandi chose to send his delegation to Newport without him so he could tour Magruder Hall and the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and reminisce about his time spent at OSU. Read more... All-College Welcome BBQ Kicks off the Academic Year Faculty, staff and students and their families celebrated the beginning of the academic year on a sunny fall afternoon September 26 by mingling at the AllCollege Welcome Barbecue on the Magruder front lawn. This has become an annual tradition and is sponsored by Nestle Purina and SCAVMA to promote a sense of community among faculty, staff and students. Students also staffed club tables and signed up new club members. Well-behaved canine family members on leashes also enjoyed the festivities. More pictures... Laurel Khiabani Leaves VDL Quality Manager Position Effective October 10, Laurel Khiabani will resign her position as VDL Quality Manager to relocate to the Bay Area where her husband has taken a new position. VDL director Dr. Jerry Heidel stated, “Laurel has done an outstanding job for the VDL and the College, managing not only the VDL quality program but also providing support with safety and quality issues for the CVM. After moving to Sweet Home following retirement from the veterinary school at Cornell, Barry offered his services to the College and the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. For the past four years he has provided diagnostic services as an anatomic pathologist to the VDL, and has helped with the professional curriculum, providing lectures in General and Systemic Pathology.
