1/28/13 Proposal to use IT to bridge Europe’s language barriers - timesofmalta.com Sunday, January 27, 2013 Proposal to use IT to bridge Europe’s language barriers Meta-Net, a European network of 60 research centres in 34 countries including Malta, has developed a Strategic Research Agenda document outlining how investment in language technologies can generate considerable economic benefits. It was presented to representatives of the European Commission, research and industry at a technology symposium last Friday in Berlin. Meta-Net is also advocating the design and development of a European Service Platform for Language Technologies to provide seamless language technologies to users and customers. Through a coordinated, large-scale effort leading up to 2020, technologies can be developed to future-proof European languages, providing new applications and services to citizens and creating a host of new opportunities for the European IT and language industries. The University is also involved in Metanet4U, an EU-funded project contributing to Meta-Net by developing language resources and tools for the Maltese, Portuguese, Spanish, Romanian and English languages.
