2008 Awards Ceremony
Many years ago at our College’s first awards ceremony there was a total of $18,000 in awards given
out to students. This year’s awards ceremony saw a whopping $250,000 handed out to students,
faculty and staff. As a measure of our College’s growth over the years, that’s impressive!
Among the most notable of the student scholarships is the E. E. Wedman Outstanding Senior
Award. This year’s recipient was Tami Rogers. Mrs. Rachel Wedman, wife of the late E. E.
Wedman, founding dean of the college, was on hand to make the presentation.
Dean Clarke presented the Pfizer Award for Research Excellence to Dr. Kathy Magnusson for her
work in investigating the various receptors and neurotransmitters in the aging brain. She also has an
impressive list of scholarly works.
The final award of the afternoon, the prestigious Carl J. Norden Distinguished Teacher Award, was
presented to Dr. Terri Clark for her ability to creatively and effectively teach gross and microscopic
anatomy to our freshman veterinary students.
The rest of the program included more than 150 awards with recipients in all four classes. Many of
the donors who sponsor these scholarships were present to hand their scholarships to the students
receiving them. The ceremony was followed by a reception sponsored by Nestlé Purina. A complete
list of recipients is at the bottom of this page.
Congratulations to all recipients!

The National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners
Congratulations to Dr. Linda Blythe on her reappointment to the
National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (NBVME). This
organization consists of 13 members representing all aspects of
veterinary practice and education. Dr. Blythe will represent all the
veterinary colleges through the AAVMC. Other board members
represent the equine, bovine, swine, small animal via AAHA, and
public health. There are also three members of the veterinary state
practice boards (AAVSB). Their job is to produce the tests used to
license students for practice in the United States and Canada (the
NAVLE) as well as the Qualifying Examination used for students
from unaccredited veterinary schools. The latter is a basic science
test that examines students over the first two years of their
professional education and is used by some accredited veterinary
colleges as an assessment of their curriculum. The NBVME conducts the testing and scoring
through their association with the National Board of Medical Examiners in Philadelphia twice a
year. Students at the beginning of their senior year should check the NBVME web site for
information on application and testing windows.
College of Veterinary Medicine 2008 Graduation
For the 26th consecutive year, the College of Veterinary Medicine at Oregon State University has
conferred the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine to its senior class. There were 44 candidates
this year that crossed the stage to receive their diplomas on Sunday.
Dr. Cyril R. Clarke, Lois Bates Acheson Dean, College of Veterinary Medicine opened the ceremony
with a welcome and introductions, followed by comments from Dr. Sabah, Provost and Executive
Vice President, Oregon State University, and the Honorable Tony Van Vliet, State Board of Higher
Education and former Oregon State Representative. Dr. Joe Snyder, veterinary practitioner and
owner of Myrtle Veterinary Hospital gave the keynote address, with Dr. Chris Cebra, Interim
Department Head, Clinical Sciences, as the faculty speaker. Dr. Susan Tornquist, Associate Dean of
Student and Academic Affairs, College of Veterinary Medicine presented the class after which Dr.
Sabah Randhawa conferred the degrees. Drs. John Schlipf and Bernard Séguin, faculty of the
College of Veterinary Medicine served as hooders and Dr. Scott Loepp, President, Oregon
Veterinary Medical Association, administered the Veterinarians Oath. Drs. Karyn Bird and Kirk
