Abstract
THE GAY COMMUNITY AND THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
Identifying the perspective of the Maltese Gay Community on State and Catholic Church relations and its effect
on the implementation and enforcement of equal legislation for the Maltese Gay Community
The main aim of this dissertation is to gather information on the opinion of representatives of the gay
community in Malta regarding the relationship between Church and State in Malta and the effect this
relationship has on their own spirituality and on the implementation of LGBT legislation. Currently in Malta
LGBT legislation is minimal especially when compared to other regions within the European Union.
Issues discussed in this research concern Church and State relations and how these effect LGBT legislation in
Malta. The focus is also in the role of religion in creating and defining a community. when religion excludes
certain group in society, these might resort to new spiritualities. Data was collected through focus group
interviews and one on one interviews with fifteen representatives from the Maltese gay community. the
researcher was able to identify the need for more legislation for LGBT people in Malta. Participants stated that
the State is still affected by the Roman Catholic Church morality when it comes to implement LGBT positive
legislation. The researcher also identified coping strategies adopted by spiritual individuals who are gay or
lesbian. Through interviews with two representatives from the Malta Gay Rights Movement and the DRACHMA
group (the Maltese Catholic gay and lesbian group) the researcher identified the diverse lobbying which is
conducted by these NGO’s and also the NGO representatives opinion on State and Church relationship and how
these affect LGBT positive legislation.

The study indicates the need for legislation that promotes LGBT interests, its implementation and enforcement
so as to have a more egalitarian society. The participants also expressed the need to recognize that in Malta
there is not only one dominant culture, but there are various different forms of lifestyles which unfortunately are
being ignored by mainstream institutions such as the Church and State on the basis of morality.

QORMI
The objective of this research is to study the impact of industrialisation and modernisation on the families of
bakers in Qormi. Family structures, values within the family and gender roles were investigated through a
qualitative research method and semi-structured interviews.
This study is divided into five chapters. Various theories are presented in the first chapter dealing with different
perspectives on the family. Following this there is the methodological chapter explaining why a qualitative
method was chosen. Data gathered from the fourteen case studies is analyzed in the third chapter. A conclusion
summing up what has been found in the research is the fourth chapter. The last chapter following the conclusion
is the appendix that is divided into two parts: appendix one and appendix two. This includes all the interview
transcriptions both in Maltese (found in Appendix 1) and in English (Appendix 2). Tables are listed, explaining
some of the data gathered better. A bibliography is also available in the last pages of this study.

Women and the Internet in Domestic Space
This study focuses on an assessment and evaluation of the Internet use in the domestic space, with particular
reference to women. To support this, women of different ages were interviewed, using qualitative methods in
order to shed light on the use of the Internet and its impact on the lives of women in the domestic space.
Interesting and diverse findings emerged from these research methods. The perceptions of Internet use from
women in the domestic sphere differed, depending on their multiple roles in the domestic space and in society.
Their gender role in the domestic space was pivotal in the perceptions they outlined. This study examines the
following points: the Interned modifies the perception of associating the domestic space with the traditional and
the public space with modernity; the distinction between users and non users; women control over the domestic
space; the Internet linked with domesticity and education; Internet discussed in moral terms, the Internet
reinforce older behaviour and create new spaces; the digital divide and the Internet as a tool of isolation but also
serving as a source of interaction.

CHALLENGING THE MYTH OF MERITOCRACY:
How Gender, Religion and Class Affect Access to Education
This study analyzes the problems encountered in the Maltese educational system, from a Gozitan perspective. It
investigates which types of discrimination Gozitan students face during their educational years that are from the
primary till the tertiary level, to their place of work. It also tries to find out the hidden implications that such
discrimination leaves on the students who because of their gender, class and locality, experience such
intolerance.
It is argued that the educational system is a system where everyone is rewarded according to his/her own merit.
However, such dissertation through its analysis tries to show whether this is the case among Gozitan students.

LONE MOTHERS AND THE LABOUR MARKET:
The Situation in Malta
Abstract
Lone Mothers and the Labour Market: The Situation in Malta is a study which deals with the aspects confronted
by lone mothers when considering employment, or when already forming part of the workforce. The examination
of these aspects helps clarify whether lone mothers, provided adequate support, are willing to take up
employment outside the home.
The method for this study follows the design and analysis of a semi-structured questionnaire, administered
personally to ten lone mothers. The analysis of this questionnaire looks into the criteria mentioned above. In
order to achieve such aims, the methodology follows a qualitative nature. This dissertation focuses on lone
mothers, precisely previously-married mothers who have lost their husband through annulment, separation,
divorce or death.

The findings show that most of the respondents are economically stable through income from various sources.
While some respondents work, and in general have a very positive attitude towards their employment, others
have decided to further their education and have a great desire to form part of the workforce once they terminate
their studies.

GENDER DIFFERENCES IN EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT:
A Case Study Approach
This case study is a qualitative research that examines the link between gender differences and educational
achievement in a particular state primary school in Malta. To understand this link, the present researcher
looked at traditional gender stereotypes, labelling, classroom practices and the way in which different academic
subjects are linked to different genders. The main methods of data collection used for this research study were
interviewing and participant observation.
The first chapter of the dissertation introduces the research topic, while the following chapter takes a look at
what different theorists have said in relation to gender differences and education. Chapter three of the
dissertation discuses the aims and the methodology of this case study. The last two chapters are the most
important chapters of the dissertation: chapter four is the data analysis chapter where the data is presented and
evaluated and chapter five is the conclusion, where the present researcher discusses the findings.

THE PROBLEMS OF FAMILY CARERS OF ELDERLY PEOPLE
The family was and still remains, one of the major social institutions within every society. The family performs a
wide range of functions, and an important function which is needed more today is to provide care for the elderly
relatives. This is due to the radical increase in the elderly population. Once an individual is faced with such
demands, problems and strains begin to rise.
The problems carers encounter through the process of care were the main focus of this sociological study.
Caregiving towards elderly relatives was analysed in the light of the Maltese context. It was hypothesised that
when carers and care recipients lived in the same house, a heavier amount of care was required, conflict arose
and carers felt a strong sense of strain.
Through snowball sampling, thirty carers were identified to participate in the research study. By a personal
focused interview, carers were asked what problems they encountered due to caregiving. Questions included the
reason for becoming a carer, health issues, social problems, the change in relation with others and finally the
employment and economic issues.

Results showed that hypothesis was proven to be accepted. It was found that gender played an important role in
who became a carer, and the pathways by which individuals became carers influenced how they viewed the
caring experience. Carers felt that problems increased due to the combination of work, marriage and caring for
children and their elderly relatives. The strain increased the levels of health problems and psychological stress.
Conflict with siblings was experienced due to their lack of involvement in care. Furthermore, the time and
demands care required left no space for interaction with other members of the family and for personal activities.

ANOTHER CHANCE TO EDUCATIONAL SUCCESS
The aim of this research was to find out what prevents some students from leaving their eleven years of
compulsory education with the necessary qualifications needed for higher education or employability. This study
tries to find out why some students fail. In the literature review, a number of studies were focused upon. The
barriers were listed under two categories: those internal to school and those factors external to school, namely
the family. This was followed by a survey conducted among 77 adult learners and an interview with two teachers
teaching at this level. The ages of the respondents ranged from 16 till the age of 30. The participants were
attending evening classes at M’Reāina, Blata l-Bajda and the Lifelong Centre at the Junior College premises.
The research was carried out using a questionnaire. From the research it was clear that factors within the school
play a major role when compared to the family regarding the students’ educational achievement.

BEHIND THE MOTIVATION OF A RELIGIOUS YOUTH GROUP
During adolescence, there is an internal desire to socialize with peers of the same age and mostly of the same
values and interests. There is also the inevitable search for one’s identity. Religious youth groups in Malta play a
great role in both building one’s friendships and one’s unique identity. This research focuses on the regular and
the irregular members of the YMM. It tries to understand the attitudes, motivations and de-motivations of the
committed members and of those members who attend infrequently.
The introduction includes both the aim and the focus of this research and details of the YMM which were taken
into account during the course of the study. The second chapter is a theoretical chapter which deals with
research and conclusions drawn by sociologists and social psychologists. The following chapter deals with the
methodology used in this study including the advantages and drawbacks of the methodology chosen. The
analysis of the data gathered is divided in two and can be used to compare the different opinions of the
participants and also to draw out what YMM needs to focus on to attract and maintain members. The conclusion
draws together the results obtained from the research.

UNEMPLOYMENT AMONG GRADUATES
Abstract
This dissertation endeavours to establish if Faculty of Arts students graduating in Sociology or Social Studies
from the University of Malta actually find employment and whether that is in any way related to their previous
studies. Unemployment among graduates is a hot local issue. University students often ask themselves whether
it is any longer worthwhile studying hard when the rate of unemployed graduates is presumably very high.
Other students claim that the situation is exaggerated but still express concern that the job they might obtain is
not necessarily even remotely related to their previous studies. Furthermore, much debate is taking place
regards to the fact that graduates with a B.A. Degree prefer to carry on with their studies for a Higher Degree,
while others complain that the financial burden to do so is prohibitive.
This study is therefore being conducted in order to establish an objective assessment of the situation while
appraising the feelings of sociology and social studies graduates from the University of Malta. It will attempt to
establish how Maltese employers ask for experience from students who have just graduated when it is likely that
most of them do not have any experience at all.

THE DEFINITION OF DEVIANCE AMONG PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS, STAFF AND PARENTS
This is just to give an overview of this dissertation. This study focuses on the definition of deviant behaviour
within the school system; more precisely in a primary school, low-streamed class in year 6. The researcher’s
main interest is to try to find out what are the main causes for the pupils to behave defiantly. However, since the
researcher focused on a one particular class, the sample was too small when compared with the whole
population, so one cannot generalise because findings may change within different contexts.
Various studies were conducted previously on this topic. There are factors external to school and factors internal
to school. Some argue that for some individuals, it is part of their free will to engage in these types of acts,
therefore they choose to do so. However, there are others who keep back from engaging in these types of acts. So

one may ask ‘What leads deviant people to act like this?’ ‘Why do they do so?’ This dissertation will try to
compare its findings with what previous researchers found out earlier, at different times within different
contexts and see whether they are still applicable for today or not and finally propose what should be done.

Abstract
Many argue that the major causes to deviant behaviour are family backgrounds, peers and media. However,
there may be causes which rise from within the school system in itself. Some other people maintain that up to a
certain extend the family backgrounds, peers and the media should not always be blamed; in spite that in some
cases the school itself fails to integrate all its pupils within the system.

LET THE MUSIC SPEAK
A study on teenagers showing the link between the aspects of social life and musical enjoyment
This study examines the link between the aspects of social life and musical enjoyment. Therefore it looks at the
factors of society, which are socially patterned, including age, gender, class and education in relation to the
enjoyment of music. This research studies 120 interviewees falling between the ages of 15 and 19 of both
genders.
This dissertation first takes a look at what different theorists have said in relation to subcultures, fans, the
meaning and interpretation given to music and lyrics, and finally, music and time. A special reference is also
made to Pierre Bourdieu’s (1979) theory in which he relates taste with class.
The following chapter discusses the aims and the methodology of this dissertation. Having decided to do
triangulation, the advantages and disadvantages of both qualitative and quantitative research are analysed. It
also focused on the sample which was chosen, in this case by using quota sampling. Moreover, it concentrates on
the construction and administration of the questionnaire, along with ethics, and the imitations which were met.

‘TATTOOING AMONG YOUNG MALTESE PERSONS’
Comparing the Views of Users and Non-Users
In the last few years we have seen an increase in the number of people in Malta who decided to make a tattoo;
both the Henna temporary tattoos and the permanent tattoos. In fact, nowadays we can easily notice the
increase of tattooing even among famous persons in America, and also in European countries, who carry a tattoo.
Such persons vary from models, band players, NBA basketball players and also actors.
This dissertation examines youth from the age 14 to 30 years who have done a Henna temporary tattoo or a
permanent tattoo. This study will consider mainly why the youths did the tattoo, if the tattooed people found any
difficulties because of their tattoo, and if they have any regrets for doing the tattoo. However, for the purpose of
this study, it is also important to get the point of view of those youths who do not have the tattoo and see what is
their opinion, both on tattoos and on the people who carry them.

‘THE CLASSROOM AND THE WORLD OF WORK’ ARE THEY INTER-RELATED?
The main purpose of this study is to see how well prepared female students, in Governmental Schools are on
what is expected from them as soon as they enter the working environment. With the help of this study it is
intended to find out whether students in Malta, by the end of their scholastic life, become aware of the rights and
obligations needed on the place of work in order to develop a strong character.
The aim of this research is to see what the teachers believe is needed for the students and how they think that
students should be prepared for the working environment. This will be analysed with the help of interviews to
teachers. When conducting focus groups, with few classes, it will be easier to note whether the teachers are
achieving their aims. The career counsellors will also be interviewed so that one can get a clearer idea on the
students’ behaviour once faced with the issue of the world of work.

despite encouraging developments in recent years, the study of rock music remains oblivious to sociological
theory. “Rebel Yell” seeks to affirm the sociological implications of rock music. One cannot address rock music as
if it were a culturally-isolated movement. ‘Rock’ is, moreover a warren of subcultures and historical cults which
can only be understood, in a socio-historical context. In order to arrive at a more thorough understanding of ‘rock
culture’ in Malta, this study attempts to analyse the values of local rock groups by scrutinising their lyrics with
reference to Hall’s prioritised list of values (1986). Argumentation is further substantiated by relevant extracts
from in-depth interviews that were conducted with local rock personalities and verbal or lyrical quotations of
foreign rock bands. This study primarily aims at giving the reader a better insight of rock sub-cultures in Malta
and abroad, and showcases rock, as the reactionary counter-cultural movement that the large part of its
elements betray it to be.

A REVIEW OF THE SURVEY RESEARCH METHOD
In this dissertation, I have employed the terms ‘response’ and ‘reply’, in a non-interchangeable way. By ‘reply’ I
am meaning some particular answer given by a respondent, to one of the various questions in some
questionnaire. ‘Response’, in the other hand, refers to the whole collective body of replies given by an individual
respondent, or by a group of respondents. While one is poring over this dissertation, it is good to keep the above
distinction in mind.

GENDER EQUALITY IN MARRIAGE – A MYTH OR REALITY?
A Case Study on Middle-Class Couples
14
Social Studies Dissertations
Abstract
This qualitative study examined if gender equality in marriage is a myth or reality in view of the fact that
spouses today are considered to be equal partners in marriage in the eyes of the law. Bounding this study to
middle-class couples – considered to divide family work more equally than lower social classes, this case study
instrumentally explored if these couples’ marriages are egalitarian in practice.
Data was gathered by means of in-depth semi-structured interviews with twelve married couples with schoolaged children. Although many couples visualized marriage equality as entailing the equal division of housework,
childcare and sharing of decisions, in practice the majority of couples’ marriages were more conventional –
women performed the larger share of routine housework and childcare and men performed more occasional work
and made more major financial decisions. Whilst some couples evenly shared some tasks and/or decisions, none
of the couples shared “everything” as many had conceptualised marriage equality to be. Few couples dared to
cross over into the opposite genders’ boundaries and perform tasks associated with the opposite gender.
Author
Date
Subject

Husbands and wives’ traditional ideologies, presence of children, time availability and constraints, and men’s
greater relative resource emerged as possible factors impeding the attainment of gender equality in marriage for
most couples. Lack of discourse on sharing prior marriage, maternal gatekeeping and economies of gratitude
seem to be intertwining internal processes limiting the possibility for couples to share more family work.
Although couples seemed satisfied with their current division of labour and many believed it was fair – there are
consequences for couples living in unequal relationships.

THE ILLEGALITY OF ABORTION IN MALTA:
In Whose Interest?
The purpose of this research is to study the violations of women’s reproductive rights in Malta through the issue
of abortion. The research questions the present illegal status of abortion and attempts to provide an analysis of
the role played by the medico-legal-moral power elite, (which for the purpose of this study have been identified as
being the Catholic Church, the Medical Profession and the State; thus medico-legal-moral), in exerting
patriarchal power and eliciting social control on women seeking termination of pregnancy. This analysis will be
examined in the light of radical feminist theory and the Foucauldian perspective.
15
Social Studies Dissertations
The research methodology utilized for this dissertation is an analytical one, based on both official and nonofficial documentary research and qualitative interviewing, whilst utilizing sociological discourse. The main
methodological tools employed are those of content analysis and semi-structured interviewing, which tools were
employed within the framework of the utilized theoretical perspectives.
Through a local literature review, a depiction of the Maltese present abortion state of affairs is put forward. The
exploration of the abortion debate has mainly been analysed through ‘Women on Waves’ project proposal and
Malta’s negotiations for accession within the European Union.
The pro-life position of the local power’s elite position on abortion is presented through a content analysis of their
contribution to the abortion debate and their repertoire of utilized discourse.
Another main area of study consists in an analysis of 10 case studies of Maltese women who have experienced
termination of pregnancy through the abortion event, focusing on their abortion experience and ideological
framework.
The study has identified that in the local situation, power is exerted through the illegality of abortion by the
medico-legal-moral bodies, resulting in the social control of women and the maintenance of the present social
order. The present local situation on abortion is in face upheld as working against the interests of women and
the protection of their reproductive rights and freedoms. Besides, from a feminist perspective, recent provisions
such as the negotiations promulgated by Malta and the EU and the amendments made to the Criminal Code are
apt to construct a more conservative future environment on the permissibility of abortion as a birth-control
method.
Consequently, the present situation is depicted as constituting the ‘Althusserean’ notion of state apparatus,
where both the ideological and repressive state apparatuses are targeted at eliciting social control on women
seeking abortion. However, resistance is found to be exerted on this type of social control by women who have
transgressed this control by the same act of abortion. An analysis of the intensive interviewing shows that
women are aware of the patriarchal power exerted on their reproduction rights by the above-mentioned power
elite. It is also observed that notwithstanding the existence of such social control, a number of Maltese women do
still resort to abortion. Therefore, the medico-legal-moral power on the control of abortion is not observed to be
absolute. Such situation also implies that the illegality of abortion is not necessarily a determinant deterrent for
those women who notwithstanding the existence of social control, still decide to terminate their pregnancy.
Notwithstanding such observance, the situation of illegality still attests to a direct violation of women’s
reproductive rights and freedoms.

ADULT ILLITERACY AND SUNDAY NEWSPAPER READERSHIP IN MALTA
The objective of this research is to show that it is in the interest of the local newspaper industry to look into a
social problem like illiteracy. It seeks to establish a correlation between the problem of adult illiteracy and
Sunday newspaper readership in Malta. In order to arrive at this objective, a mixed type of research was to be
adopted, making use of both qualitative interviews and a quantitative survey questionnaire. For the qualitative
part of this study, the five editors of the local Sunday newspapers were interviewed; while for the quantitative
part, a telephone questionnaire among a sample of Senglea, Fgura, Attard and Sliema residents aged 18 and
over was conducted. Respondents to the telephone questionnaire on Sunday newspaper readership are divided
into 59 per cent readers and 41 per cent non-readers. A Chi Square Test confirms a significant difference at 95
per cent level of confidence between these two categories.
Census 1995 literacy and illiteracy data of residents of Senglea, Fgura, Attard and Sliema, aged 18 and over was
also used. A Spearman correlation of the four towns’ illiteracy and newspaper non-readership gives a 0.8 rate
that indicates a strong, although not absolute, correlation. This means that the rate of illiteracy may not be the
only variable, which causes newspaper non-readership.

abuse. The work argues that today’s ecstasy consumers are likely to come from all social and educational
backgrounds and cannot be written off as delinquent or people with no hope or future. ‘E’ For Ecstasy brings
forward the argument that ecstasy is essentially a drug sub-culture forming part of the rave scene. Monitoring
the use of leisure time and the significance of drug taking of a sample of seven people, the work builds a picture
of how recreational drug use fits into the notions of ‘time out’ from the stresses and strains of growing in a risky
post-modern society. Ecstasy consumption is reported as a normal social activity for a number of people who also
extend their psycho-active, pick and mix repertoire to other illegal substances.
‘E’ For Ecstasy shows that the drug decision-making processes that lead some men and women to use illegal
substances are dynamic and ever changing. The study also reveals that a number of young Maltese have
embraced recreational drug-use and have shaped a life-style that revolves around the use of illegal substances.

Abstract
IN SEARCH OF COMMUNITY
A Cast-Study of Hal-Merhba, a Village in Malta
Aim of study: This study aspires to examine whether or not the people residing at Hal-Merhba are a community.
It aims to analyse the social relations and social processes which prevail in the area, observing how willingly
individuals and groups co-operate together in providing meaningful solutions to problems which concern them.
Methods of investigation: Participant observation is the main method of analysis to be employed, whereby as a
researcher, I would purposefully engage in social activities which are organized in Hal-Merhba (by such
associations as band-clubs, sports clubs, and religious groups) and take up residence in the village in question.
Results:
1. The demarcation of the social organization of Hal-Merhba, thereby providing a profile of the community
under study.

2. An in-depth understanding of how human interactions are employed by the residents of Hal-Merhba to
bring about social and physical development in their locality.
3. The delineation of the factors influencing the residents’ inter-personal relationships, thereby enabling an
analysis to be made of whether they are conducive to an internalization of community values.

CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS IN MALTA
A Study of Care Management Level, Facilities & Attitudes
The aim of this work is to explore and evaluate critically the extent to which the resources and services available
to disabled children in Malta are developed, in view of the significant number of such children on the island.
The study is a second-level analysis based on the data collected by the ongoing Action-Research Project for the
Handicapped carried out by a multidisciplinary team of professionals and organised by the University of Malta.
For the purpose of the study, primary data collected from two Special Schools was used. One school houses
children with mild to moderate mental retardation whereas the other accepts children with a combination of
physical and mental disabilities. A total of 148 children and their families were studied.
Identification of the medical diagnosis and its aetiology are made for each child and the general impairments,
disabilities and handicaps are analysed using the Classification of Impairments, Disabilities and Handicaps
drawn up by the World Health Organisation in 1980. Attention is drawn to the problem og psychosocial
deprivation and its consequences, the most obvious of which is the higher incidence of mental retardation in this
particular subculture. The data collected by the social workers is used in this regard to emphasise this theory.

Another area on which this study focuses is the problem of early identification of a child’s disability. the study
includes an analysis of age when a disability was first noted as compared with the time taken for the diagnosis to
be made, it at all. It is shown that in Malta proper identification of a child’s disability is not made early enough,
this leading to late use of resources with all the attendant effects.
The doctor-patient relationship is also discussed. Doctors break the news of a child’s disability to the parents in a
manner that lacks humaneness and more important, long-term support. Doctors lack the proper training for
communicating with families of disabled children and this problem is viewed in the light of the long-term
management of children with special needs.
Many of the difficulties faced by handicapped children and their families arise from the particular attitudes of
different people towards them. This creates a particular sub-culture in which a handicap accrues all the features
of a “social fact” as understood in the sociological literature. These attitudes, inhibitions and support systems are
discussed and the local situation is compared with that resulting from studies carried out in other countries,
showing that worldwide continuation exists but that management of these sub-cultures is differently
undertaken.

Finally, the services and concessions that are presently available for disabled children are appraised and the
reasons why they are not made full use of are analysed. This leads to the discussion of issues which would
contribute to the better utilisation of present facilities and the creation of new ways to improve the lifestyle and
contribution to society of children with special needs. Among the major issues that are discussed are the effects
of Special Schooling on the child and his family, the modern concept of educational and social integration and the
present situation in Malta regarding this concept. “Integration” is discussed as an ideological aim and the
strategies which must be undertaken to achieve this aim are addressed.
