POST-TENURE REVIEW
The post-tenure review process is defined in Appendix W of the University Handbook. The process
is intended to encourage intellectual vitality and professional proficiency for all members of the
faculty throughout their careers to effectively fulfill the mission of the university.
A. Timing
All tenured faculty members must submit post-tenure review documentation every six years at the
same time as his or her annual performance review. Specific events may modify or reset the posttenure review clock as outlined in the University Handbook, Appendix W, Section 2.e.
B. Procedure
The following post-tenure review procedures are based on the University Handbook, Appendix W,
Section 2.
1. The faculty member undergoing review must submit to the department head a portfolio of
information that he or she would normally submit for the current year's annual review plus that
actually submitted for his or her previous 5 annual performance reviews. The information must
be grouped by year, arranged in chronological order and, at a minimum, contain:
a. The goals agreed upon by the faculty member and the department head.
b. The material that the faculty member submitted in support of his or her annual performance
evaluation.
c. Additional information may be included at the discretion of the faculty member.
2. The department head is responsible for making these materials, referred to as the post-tenure
documentation, available to the department's tenured faculty members at least 14 days prior to
any formal review meeting.
3. The tenured faculty members of the department are responsible for reviewing the post-tenure
documentation. The review must consider the accomplishments in light of the following:
a. Does the faculty member under review discharge conscientiously and with professional
competence the duties appropriately associated with his or her position and the goals from
step 1.a?
b. Is there a need to change the direction or scope of the faculty member's professional
duties?
c. What resources are available to enhance the professional development of the faculty
member?
4. Once the 14-day period has elapsed, the department head must convene a meeting between the
candidate and the department's tenured faculty members for the purpose of explaining or
clarifying the post-tenure documentation.
5. After meeting the candidate, the department's tenured faculty members alone meet to discuss
whether or not, in accordance with the questions in step 3 above, the faculty member under
review is making appropriate contribution to the University and whether or not changes in
duties or professional development is required.
6. A department tenured faculty member may submit his or her written review and comments to
the department head within 7 days after the meeting with the candidate. Those choosing to do
so must use the Post-Tenure Review Form found in Appendix D.
7. After the seven day period, the department head must write a Post-Tenure Review Report that
summarizes the reviews and comments of the tenured faculty members made in writing or at
the review meeting. The department head must provide a written copy of this report to the
faculty member. The summary report must not contain comments and recommendations of
individual tenured faculty members.
8. If the Post-Tenure Review Report includes a recommendation for additional professional
development, a face-to-face meeting between the department head and the faculty member
under review is required to discuss options and develop a plan.
9. The department head forwards to the Dean the Post-Tenure Review Report and the unedited
recommendations and comments of the department's tenured faculty members. Prior to this
submission to the Dean, the faculty member under review may attach comments to the PostTenure Review Report. All materials listed in step 1, must be retained by the department and
made available to the Dean upon his or her request. Materials will be returned to the faculty
person once the review process is completed.
