discussion of politics in California, including the upcoming November election.
Walters will provide insight and commentary on the current state of “The Golden
State” including views on the gubernatorial race, the initiative process, how the
Valley is viewed in Sacramento, and the state’s long-term “health” given the current political climate. Author of more than 6,500 columns about California and its
politics, Walters is a frequent contributor to national news shows, The Wall Street
Journal, and the Christian Science Monitor. This event is open to non-members
for a $10 fee, payable at the door.

Dr. Michael Caldwell (left) will provide a brief lecture to introduce a performance
by the university’s Jazz Band A. Dr. Caldwell has been serving as Assistant
Professor of Trumpet and Director of Jazz Bands “A” and “B” at California State
University, Fresno, since Fall 2002. He is also the director of the Clendenin
Brass Quintet. He previously served on the music faculty at the University of
South Alabama (1991-1999) and is Past President of the California Institute
for the Preservation of Jazz. He has performed as lead trumpet or soloist with
many of the world’s leading entertainers. He has performed with the Seattle
Symphony Orchestra and has also performed live on Public Radio International
and appeared on the Family Channel.
The Russian Romanov Dynasty: Personalities, Perils, and Politics •
October 19, 3 – 4:30 pm • Relaxed parking in Lot A
The Russian Romanov dynasty lasted from 1613 when Mikhail Romanov brought
Russia out of the “Time of Troubles” until the assassination of Nicholas II and
his family in 1918. During this time amazing palaces, museums, and cultural
monuments were constructed while much of the population of Russia remained
in abject poverty. We’ll discuss such characters as Peter the Great, Catherine
the Great (right), and the infamous Rasputin and discuss the end of the dynasty, the assassination of the royal family and whether or not grand duchess
Anastasia could have survived. Dr. Michelle DenBeste is chair of the History
Department where she teaches courses on women in Russian history, Russia and Eurasia in the 20th
century, and Russian art, literature and culture. She has traveled to Russia many times, living in St.
Petersburg for over a year and visiting frequently.
From Page to Stage: “Intimate Apparel” • October 25, November 1, 5 and 8
(see times on calendar) • Relaxed parking in UBC Lot and Lot A
Join us on a journey from the pages of the screenplay to the stage of a drama production with Dr. Melissa Gibson of Fresno State’s Theatre Arts Department as your guide. In
this four-part series, you will learn about the playwright, Lynn Nottage, enjoy a backstage tour, read and discuss the play, attend a performance, and then critique the show.
“Intimate Apparel,” America’s most produced play of the 2005-2006 season, has earned
a number of awards. It is the story of Esther, a 35-year-old seamstress who earns
her living making intimate apparel for clients around Manhattan. But as a single black
woman living at the turn of the 20th century, she bears the dual stigma of being both alone and selfsufficient. There is an additional activity fee of $20 per person, which includes a copy of the play and
admission to the Sunday, November 5 matinee performance.
Beyond What We See on TV: Crime, Victims, and Forensic Science • November 7, 14, 21,
and 28, 3 – 4:30 pm • Relaxed parking in Lot A
The media, in large part, shapes our views of crime—yet we all know that things are much different
than protrayed on our favorite shows. Fresno State is home to internationally-recognized experts
in criminal behavior, victim services, forensic science, and the criminal justice system. Join them to
explore beyond our television images into the minds of criminals, the perspectives of victims, and
the science of crime. This four-part series includes:
Part I: “Inside the Criminal Mind” with Dr. Eric Hickey (left), Director of Forensic
Studies at Alliant International University and instructor of criminal psychology at
California State University, Fresno. Dr. Hickey has taught many courses in criminal
personalities, sex crimes, homicide and psychopathology in universities, colleges,
jails and prisons and supervises theses and dissertations involving forensic and
criminal psychology. His expertise is regularly sought by the media including appearances on CNN, Catherine Crier Live, NPR, Larry King Live, 20/20, A&E Biography, Good Morning America, Court TV, Discovery and TLC.
Part II: “What about ME? The Victim’s Perspective” with Dr. Steven Walker, professor and chair of
the Criminology Department at Fresno State and a member of the Executive Board of the Joint Center on Violence and Victim Studies. Dr. Walker created the first Victim Services Summer Institute in
1989 and designed and implemented the first Victimology Major in the United States at Fresno State
in 1992. He is currently Vice President of the American Society for Victimology. As a licensed clinical
psychologist and an educator for 30 years, Dr. Walker has done numerous workshops on alcohol and
drugs, victim services, and victim service education standards.
Part III: “Using Science to Solve Crimes” with Dr. Eric Person (right). In the
crime laboratory, Dr. Person’s responsibilities included controlled substance and
clandestine laboratory analysis, scene response, and research. He currently does
research on clandestine laboratory analysis in collaboration with colleagues in the
California Department of Justice Fresno Regional Crime Laboratory located on the
Fresno State campus. He was a forensic chemist at the Washington State Patrol
Crime Laboratory Division before joining the chemistry faculty at Fresno State as
assistant professor in forensic analytical chemistry.
Part IV: “Law and the Criminal Justice System” with Harvey Wallace, JD, Professor and former Chair
in the Criminology Department. Professor Wallace was instrumental in the establishment of the Joint
Doctorate Degree in Criminal Justice Sciences with Fresno State and the University of California at
Davis. A faculty member since 1992, he is considered a subject matter expert by the U.S. Department of Justice in Family Violence and Victimology. He is the author or co-author of nine college
tests and has published in a number of referred and scholarly journals as well as presented papers
at a variety of national and international conferences.
