Spring 2007 Activities
The Reagans Go to Washington
and America is Entertained
An Evening With Theodore Roosevelt, offered in
collaboration with KVPR
Monday, January 8, 5:30 - 7 pm.
This session will be repeated on
Wednesday, January 10, 3 - 4:30 pm
Tuesday, February 13, 6:30 - 8:30 pm
Alice Peters Auditorium
Parking in Lot A and UBC Lot
When Ronald Reagan nearly stole the Republican presidential nomination away from President Gerald Ford
in 1976, Americans saw the aging actor and California
governor as a political force to be taken seriously. Four
years later, he became the oldest man ever elected as
President of the United States. With his wife Nancy at his
side as his biggest fan and closest advisor, Ronald Reagan came to Washington claiming his “outsider” status as
a great asset. Promising to reduce big government and
government spending, the Reagan Presidency produced
some surprising results and some very dramatic moments. Through it all, Ronald Reagan became known as
“the great communicator,” and even his greatest political
detractors found it difficult not to like the guy. Join Dr.
Allen Carden, professor of history at Fresno Pacific University who also teaches part-time for Fresno State, in
a revealing and refreshing look at a very human couple
whose triumphs and tragedies were followed and felt by
millions of Americans. (Also available: optional field trip
to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum;
see next column.)
An Inconvenient Truth (film)
Wednesday, January 24, 3 - 5 pm.
This session will be repeated on Wednesday,
February 7, 3 - 5 pm
Alice Peters Auditorium
Parking in Lot A and UBC Lot
The documentary An Inconvenient Truth records a multimedia presentation hosted by former vice president Al
Gore in which he discusses the scientific facts behind
global warming, explains how it has
already begun to affect our environment, talks about the disastrous
consequences if the world’s governments and citizens do not act, and
shares what each individual can do
to help protect the Earth for this and
future generations. Director Davis
Guggenheim eloquently weaves the
science of global warming with Mr.
Gore’s personal history and lifelong
commitment to reversing the effects of global climate
change. This film also serves as an introduction to the
presentation on Global Warming on February 14 with
Dr. Stephen Lewis (see description at right).
Mercedes Edwards Theatre, 902 Fifth Street, Clovis
Activity fee: $22.50
Nationally renowned for his portrayal of the third president Thomas Jefferson, humanities scholar Clay S.
Jenkinson has taken on the life
and character of the twenty-sixth
president Theodore Roosevelt. Jenkinson’s award-winning spontaneous impersonations address all the

strenuous life, the “square deal,”
life in the arena, America’s imperial
role, Capitalism and economic justice, the presidency in the twentieth century, America’s
literary achievement, and government and American
ideals. OLLI members may purchase discounted tickets
for $22.50. 75 discounted tickets available.
Global Warming and Climate Change:
The Scientific Perspective
Wednesday, February 14, 3 – 4:30 pm

The threat of rapid climate change and global warming is now widely recognized as one of the most difficult
challenges facing the world today. This talk will present
the scientific background and data that are the basis for
popular media reporting. Dr. Stephen D. Lewis, Associate
Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental
Sciences, teaches courses on Natural Disasters, Critical Thinking in the Natural Sciences, Geophysics, Global
Tectonics, and Remote Sensing. His research has focused
on the structural and tectonic development of continental margins, mostly in the circum-Pacific region. He has
led more than 25 oceanographic research expeditions to
the Philippines, the South China margin, Taiwan, Alaska,
southern Chile, Barbados, and to offshore California.
