The meeting was called to order by Chair Crosbie at 12:05 p.m. in Haak
Academic Affairs Conference Room, Madden Library 4164.

Minutes.
MSC to approve of minutes of 4 May 2012, as
amended.
2.
Agenda.
MSC to approve the agenda as distributed.
3.
Communications and announcements – WASC Retreat on Critical
Thinking and Information Literacy, October 11-12, 2012, Crowne
Plaza Hotel, Anaheim, CA. Chair Crosbie was invited to attend, but
cannot. Volunteers from the committee were solicited; those
volunteering to please email Chair Crosbie and D. Nef. A. Lawson
will also attend also in his capacity as WASC rep. from JCAST.

12:15 p.m. M. Jendian (Chair, Sociology, CSS) addressed the
committee re. Business majors’ exemption from Upper division MI
courses. (N.B. Exemption was granted by committee by MSC 7 Oct
2011 – see minutes). M. Jendian clarified how CSS became aware
of the exemption, that D. Nef was then contacted and that he
explained the decision, and that the Chairs of CSS then met and
expressed concerns (for impact on CSS departments and
programs).
M. Jendian requested clarification on 1. Notification process to
colleges of GE committee decisions, 2. The number of GE
committee meetings 2011-12, and 3. The nature of the application
from CSB.

A. Lawson explained all three: 1. GE committee college rep.
member reports back to college (there was no rep. from CSS for all
of 2011-12), 2. Minutes from 2011-12 meetings will all be posted
on Senate website, but also emailed to M. Jendian, and 3. The
request from CSB was accompanied by a persuasive academic
justification.
M. Jendian left at 12:30 p.m.
5.
DS 71 assessment report, received 14 May 2012. Postpone reading
until other assessment reports have been requested and received.
6.
Clarification of iterative writing component for CRIM 120S. Email
from S. Walker provided details of writing component. MSC for
approval of CRIM 120S writing component, provided those
details are incorporated into the syllabus, and the syllabus is
provided to the GE committee. Chair Crosbie to contact S. Walker.
7.
GE Policy and Procedures documents. “ Clean” copies of drafts of
both to be read by committee members, and comments, edits and
suggestions prepared for the next meeting.
MSC to adjourn at 1:05 p.m.
The next scheduled meeting of the General Education Committee will be
14 Sep 2012, 12-2 p.m., Haak Academic Affairs Conference Room,
Madden Library 4164.
