Large pieces of coloured paper, scissors, glue etc should be available for designing posters, adverts, front covers etc. (All useful exercises in early analysis.) With newspaper or magazine analysis or production, it is useful to have sheets with blank text boxes and masthead spaces to practise page paste-ups. (Can also be set up on computer.) These can be used in simulation exercises – the class is split into 2/3 groups and given out a blank, but boxed off, front page and a brief containing the type of publication and the target readership. Instructions are to complete a front page in 40 minutes as 'news and pictures' are given out. Subscribe to relevant magazines/newspapers or if finances prevent this the library might provide old copies. 4 NQ Media Studies Notes for Tutors Publications and Internet Resources Media Education Journal http://www.mediaed.org.uk Media Studies UK http://www.mediauk.com Scottish Screen http://www.scottishscreen.com/index.taf British Film Institute http://www.bfi.org.uk Internet Movie Database http://uk.imdb.com The Newspaper File Duncan Grey and Alison Heyhoe Cambridge University Press IBSN 0 521 37126 0 The News Pack (pack and video) English and Media Centre The Soap Pack (pack and video) 136 Chalton St Advertising (pack and video) London NW1 1RX ‘Advertising Works’ books 1 to 13 These books give detailed information on prizewinning adverts; the ideas behind them and the campaigns which introduced the adverts – very useful for Higher level. The booklets could be customised to suit the texts being studied. The examples given in italics could be replaced by media or text specific examples. At Intermediate level it is recommended that you add text specific questions. The booklets should be used for both the Fiction and Non-fiction Units. Candidates would be expected to write notes on each key aspect in preparation for assessment (see Arrangements: Preparation for Assessment). These notes should be based on the information under each key aspect, in particular the bullet points under ‘Advice’. Internal Unit Assessment - Analysis Fiction and Analysis Non-fiction Candidates must pass a minimum of two text-based key aspects: Categories Language Narrative Representation and one context-based key aspect: Audience Institution in each of the two assessments (time allocation: 1 hour). All key aspects must be covered over the two assessments. For example, if Categories, Representations and Audience are passed in the Fiction Unit then Language, Narrative and Institution must be passed in the Non-fiction Unit. 10 NQ Media Studies Notes for Tutors Assessment Level Higher: Candidates should select and apply the appropriate key aspects to be analysed in two essays (Fiction and Non-fiction). Although a minimum of three must be passed in the time given it is possible to pass more. Intermediate 2: Although candidates will be guided which key aspects to cover by the question it is possible in the time given through integration to cover more than three key aspects. Intermediate 1: The restricted response questions could make it possible to pass all key aspects in both assessments. Evidence Requirements Records should be kept on the attainment of individual candidates in each assessment. Candidates should be advised on which key aspects still have to be passed for the second assessment if the course is being taken as a whole. Candidates taking a Unit on a stand-alone basis could retain their Analysis Reference Book together with their assessment as record of achievement. Advice Integrate Analysis with Production wherever possible. Terminology tests and/or a glossary could be added. It is highly recommended to test terminology throughout the course. (See the Analysis Glossary.) 11 NQ Media Studies Notes for Tutors Production Student Logbooks There is a Production Logbook for each level, Intermediate 1, Intermediate 2 and Higher. The Logbooks could be customised to suit the medium and type of production. The examples given in italic could be replaced by media specific examples. At Intermediate level it is recommended to add questions to be answered in the evaluation sections. The Logbooks provide more than the evidence required in the individual folio. Centres could adapt the content to their own specifications. The minimum requirements for the individual folio: 1. A production brief 2. Production notes containing: A minimum of one pre-production sheet A minimum of one production sheet A record of production meetings (these could be photocopied) Production schedule (this could be photocopied) Plan/Storyboard/Format (this could be photocopied) List of technical terms Individual notes on evaluation – pre-production, production and post-production – to be used as preparation for final evaluation 3. Evaluation For the evaluation candidates can refer to one A4 page of notes/bullet points based on information from the logbook and reviewing the final product in terms of: content language individual and group contributions institutional contexts and suggestions for improved strategies. 12 NQ Media Studies Notes for Tutors Evidence Requirements Candidates taking the Unit on a stand-alone basis should retain their Production Logbook and evaluation as evidence. Advice Integrate Production with Analysis wherever possible. Terminology tests and/or a glossary could be added. It is highly recommended to test terminology throughout the course. See NABs for media specific glossaries. 13 NQ Media Studies Notes for Tutors 14
