Spring 2008
You might not know this yet but California
Community Colleges and the CalWORKs program face significant budget cuts in the governor’s proposed budget. This will significantly impact both Cabrillo students and staff.
This summer Shelly Skye, one of the academic counselors at Fast Track, will backpack around
Lake Tahoe on the Tahoe Rim Trail. She decided to use this walk as an opportunity to publicize the pending budget cuts and to raise money to assist Fast Track To Work students with emergency needs. A few years ago, Shelly did a pledge walk and raised $4000.00!
If you are willing to sponsor her with a pledge of any amount, we can make a difference in needy students’ lives.
How You Can Support Shelly and FTTW
• Pledge:
You can pledge any amount per mile. Every pledge helps! Contact FTTW at (831) 479-
6344 OR fasttrack@cabrillo.edu
for more information or to pledge.
• Share:
Shelly’s hope is that you discuss the pending budget cuts with your friends, family and co-workers. And feel free to tell them how to pledge.
• Educate Yourself:
Don’t know much about the proposed budget cuts? Here are some informative websites: California Budget Project: www.cbp.org

Project engages in independent fiscal and policy analysis and public education with the goal of improving public policies affecting the economic and social wellbeing of low- and middle-income
Californians.”

Fast Track To Work
I have greatly enjoyed my year-long internship as a social work intern with Fast Track To Work at
Cabrillo College. The people at Fast Track are so dedicated and enthusiastic that it was a truly inspiring experience. I will be graduating with my
Masters of Social Work degree from San Jose
State University next month and leaving Fast
Track at the end of the semester.
Thanks for giving me the chance to get to know some of you and work together on growing. I wish you all an excellent and healthy summer.
—Emily Solick
It has been my pleasure to work in the front office at Fast Track for almost two years. In June I will be moving on to my next adventure.
I’ll be spending several weeks in
Nicaragua this summer. In August
I’m moving up to Oakland to attend Mills College. I’ll be getting a single-subject teaching credential in History and a Master’s degree in education.
I have loved working here and I will be sad when it’s time to leave. My deepest thanks to all the students and staff who have made this such a fulfilling and fun place to work. I will be in touch!

If you are a currently receiving the WIA scholarship, Catherine says don’t worry. Your funding will not be cut.
On Google.com you can use their online spreadsheet, word processor and presentation software - FREE! You only need a free gmail account.
You can also share your document with others to be able to view and/or edit the document. It's great for working with a group from class.
Go to Google.com
Click on "more" on the top left menus.
Go down to "documents."
Sign into your Google account.
From there you can select which program you want to use.
Be sure to file your 2007 income tax return, even after the April 15th deadline. You could receive as much as $600 per individual filer and an additional $300 per child! To receive your rebate you must file a return for 2007, even if you aren’t required to do so and don’t owe any federal income tax. The IRS will use information on your return to determine eligibility and calculate the amount of your payment. First payments are expected to be issued in May.
These rebates will NOT reduce your refund or increase the amount you owe when you file your 2008 return.
Beware of scams that use the IRS name as a lure to get your personal and financial information.

Revenue website, www.irs.gov. Click on

Well here we are again at the tail end of the semester. Congratulations to all of you who made it through your coursework! You all have so many responsibilities and challenges and I applaud all of you for your efforts. If there are any folks who would like to meet with me to discuss the highs and lows of the school year please make an appointment to come and see me. I really enjoy hearing about your accomplishments and also welcome the opportunity to cheer you on. Of course if things are not going well I would also like to offer my support and advice.
If you are planning on taking more coursework for summer and fall please make sure you are aware of all registration deadlines.
Remember, classes fill up fast, sometimes within 24 hours!
Take good care. Try to not be too stressed. Take at least a moment each day just for yourself!
