5 Principles of Global Citizenship

opinions of others in Scotland, and understand Scotland’s role within
the wider world.
2.
Develop an awareness and understanding of engagement in
democratic processes and be able to participate in critical thinking
and decision making in schools and communities at local, national
and international level.
3.
Understand the interdependence between people, the environment,
and the impacts of actions, both local and global.
4.
Appreciate and celebrate the diversity of Scotland’s history, culture
and heritage and engage with other cultures and traditions around
the world.
5.
Demonstrate creative thinking and act responsibly in political,
economic, environmental, social and cultural learning.

Education for citizenship
International Education
eTwinning with pre-schoolers
Staff in Woodacre Nursery created a request
on the eTwinning website to be twinned with
a school abroad.
They selected a core group of 10 children to
lead the project and correspond directly with
children in Italy with the support of the staff.
The children would develop an awareness of
their own culture as they compared their life
in Scotland to that of a group of 4- and 5year-old children in a school in Milan.
The children exchanged two mascots, two
teddy bears named 'Hamish' and Raffaella, to
help them to appreciate the distance involved
between the two countries and the difference
between both cultures. The nurseries then
exchanged emails with photos of the mascots
having adventures in their new land!

Roybridge Primary School
Washed up bottle turns into whole school project!
“The children themselves had decided on recycling as their special project.
We set ourselves the goal of encouraging whole families to reconsider their
attitudes to waste disposal and to adopt more enlightened ways of dealing
with their rubbish. From the start there was considerable subject overlap and
much cooperation from visiting teachers and parents. ”
