Post Flex Week Survey 9/4/13 18 responses: 2 admins, 3 classified, 13 faculty What did you like best about Flex Week? The variety of relevant activities offered. Seeing what other faculty in other departments are doing. It is also awesome to get to know other faculty from other divisions. The lunch offered at All College Day made me think that we (the Cabrillo faculty and staff) may again be appreciated by the administration, our leadership. Updates The session I planned turned out okay. I'm too busy to attend anything else A lot of valuable information to support Student Success! Teaching STEM activity with Peter Shaw Hands-on, common project and very engaging information from a broad range of perspectives. Good model for possible collaboration of faculty teaching. Laurel Workshop on DSPS by Beth McKinnon et al and workshop by Sesario, Say What You Mean, Do What You Say. I hope you will keep repeating these workshops in future Flex Weeks for faculty who missed them or need a refresher. What did you like best about All College Day? That it was on Monday and that we had an opportunity to talk and socialize over lunch together. New president and her presentation Great audience turn out Breakfast Lunch even though I didn't get a ticket, I liked the idea. Well organized, lively, engaging and effectively timed--(e.g. for the most part, speeches and presentations didn't drag on and on)--the morning's presentations clipped along at an effective pace keeping the audience engaged and interested Unfortunately, I couldn't attend, because I am a part time faculty and I had conflict with my work schedule on the other campus. Getting to know Laurel a bit. The recognition awards. It finished early. the food The collective camaraderie Seeing faculty and staff that I don't get to see during the semester. I liked that it was held on Monday to kick off Flex Week. Laurel's personal sharing was very charming. The food was pretty good. Laurel presentation...so happy she is on board! Future Needs More workshops that allow faculty to talk about teaching. Specific topics can be great, but the bottom line is that most of us want to share how things are going in the classroom. I most enjoy any activities that encourage interdisciplinary approach. Continued focus & updates on Emergency Preparedness & related training; Effective strategies for working with today's student population (e.g. classroom management, disruptive students, sharing tips from seasoned instructors for new faculty, etc.) Understand who is in my class and what they really want to learn from me. As a foreign language instructor, I teach sections to talk about such as "family" and "home town". Recently, I learned it is painful for some of my students to talk about those subjects; students from foster families or students of refugee, illegal immigrants, etc. I would like to know what these students as well as all other students aspire at a college. More cultural stuff - I'm totally burned out on Student Success stuff. Feels like we're just covering the same ground over and over again. Developing mentoring relationships with students Developing "communities of practice"--i.e. small cohorts of faculty who act as a peer consulting group. I'd actually like to propose this as a pilot project for the spring. Flipped classrooms Xanedu and what they offer, how long it takes to prepare the e-copy and hard copy of a reader. Personal safety in the classroom Content specific discussions/presentations (how we can best present information in math classes) Intro/reminder of all the services available to students on campus I missed the workshop on Using SOFIA to Analyze Student Success, so I'd like to see it, or some other data on student success that we can use in our categorical program. all college day presentation or at least two hours or more on Veterans for all Flex week will always be irrelevant to me, because as classified I'm too busy to attend workshops. There has been some interest in alternatives for classified...I hope that continues. Extend the PC meeting to two hours. The time can be used for more sharing and discussion. Comments Make sure that nothing starts before 10:00 a.m.! (Well, you asked.) Schedule lunch to be set up and ready to serve by 11:30 I'd actually vastly prefer to have more online options. I'd like to be able to tailor my time to complete things when it's most convenient for me (it'd save gas, too!) I'd like to think about having a flex week that is dedicated primarily to instructional best practices and innovations. Also, more half, or whole day programs to really get into more depth than two hours allows." This Fall seemed pretty depauperate in its diversity of offerings. offering some popular topics twice to avoid conflicts with other programs
