STAFF DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE Minutes, February 20, 2014, Teaching & Learning Center Attendees: Francine Van Meter (Chair), Sandi Moore, Sylvia Winder, John Govsky, Marcy Alancraig, Patrick Meyer, Michael Mangin, Sesario Escoto, Sue Slater, Poco Marshall Absent: Jill Gallo, Ian Haslam, Vicki Fabbri, Loree McCawley, Carol Hoffman Welcome and Introductions Spring Flex Week Review Members received copies of the Spring 2014 Event Summary, collected from workshop evaluation forms and attendance sheets. Attendance was consistent with past spring flex events and the number of events made the coordination manageable. Fall Flex Week Planning Sesario proposed a guest speaker for All College Day. Last semester the Staff Development Committee provided partial funding for two members of the Student Support Conference Team (SSCT) to attend the National Association of Behavior Intervention Teams conference. They heard Lucinda Roy from Virginia Tech speak. She is a creative writing instructor and wrote No Right to Remain Silent: What We’ve Learned from the Virginia Tech Tragedy. Her contribution to the discussion about campus safety and education reform comes from firsthand experience and is shared across the country. The Virginia Tech shooter was one of her students. Unfortunately, she can only come on Friday of flex week because of her teaching commitments. President Jones states if we invite a guest speaker, it would probably be in the spring. The Committee agreed if we don’t host a guest speaker, All College Day will once again be on Monday of flex week. Poco expressed concerns about getting the Theater ready and time for rehearsals for All College Day. Everyone agreed he needs ample advance notice to plan ahead.* *Poco was notified RE: President’s decision and ACD will be on Monday, August 25. Last year the rehearsal was held on the Friday afternoon before Flex Week. Marcy shared some suggestions from the “Visioning” workshop; have a theme for the entire year, included as part of flex week, and whatever flex is, it should be designed for faculty and classified. There was discussion about connectedness and connecting; faculty and staff with each other, with students, connected with teaching and learning. Cabrillo Connects seemed to be a simple theme with options to expand into different services and programs. Budget and funding requests The Staff Development budget has a little over $7,000 left from one-time carry over funds. Last year in response to the Student Success Task Force Recommendations and specifically recommendation #6, to Re-envision and Re-vitalize professional development; colleges participated in a six months process of developing recommendations related to professional development. This work resulted in seven recommendations going to the Board of 9/23/2013C:\Users\frvanmet\Documents\Staff Devel - TLC\Administrative\Minutes\SD Minutes 2-20-14.doc Teaching & Learning Center Governors (Board) in September 2013. The Board in response to the recommendations and with the support of the Chancellor included professional development as a part of its 2014 Legislative Agenda. This past Friday Assemblyman Das Williams, Chair of the Higher Education Committee in the Assembly introduced AB 2558, the Community College Professional Development Program. http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/13-14/bill/asm/ab_25512600/ab_2558_bill_20140221_introduced.htm It is quite likely the word “Flex” will morph into a more comprehensive campus-wide Cabrillo College Professional Development Program. Flex week will be a contractual part of the overall program.
