Achievement Pathway: Ben
Ben was successful in his BGE achieving fourth curriculum level in some areas while still developing confidence
and skills in maths and music.
His S3 profile highlighted an interest in and aptitude for modern languages and he was keen to continue studying
in this area.
Building on his achievements and successes in the BGE, in S4 Ben undertook one-year programmes of learning
leading to N5 in English, German, French, biology and chemistry and in N4 maths and music. He also continued
with programmes of learning in PE, RE and HWB and benefited from opportunities for universal support
throughout his senior phase. During the year his performance was variable but he worked well to achieve good
grades in his N5 subjects and passed both N4 subjects.
In S5, Ben continued with one-year programmes of learning at Higher level in English, German and French. In
discussion with the school and his parents, Ben agreed that a two-year programme of learning in maths and
music would allow him to learn across N5 and Higher and he would aim to sit these Highers at the end of S6. In
discussion with and support from the principal teacher of modern languages and ICT technician, Ben prepared a
short DVD and accompanying leaflet on the benefits of continuing with the study of modern languages and
presented this to primary pupils on one of their visits to the school.
In S6, Ben studied Advanced Higher German at a neighbouring school and successfully completed his Highers in
maths and music. He continued to promote modern languages by organising a regular film club for S1 pupils with
his planned personal achievement being accredited through the NQ Leadership Award.
Ben progressed to university to study German and French.
