In each of the past four seasons, Cabrillo has finished ranked in the top ten in the state of California in team defense. Playing good defense is all about effort, and the young men who play for Coach Tony Marcopulos consistently play hard every game. I am proud of all of our student-athletes, many of whom have will go on to study and play basketball at four-year colleges and universities. Go Seahawks! Marcopulos: "This group is much smaller but much deeper and quicker than some of the teams I have had in the past. Our depth will end up being an advantage for us as the season unwinds. I think this team will be very versatile and have a lot of interchangeable parts. This team has a variety of people who can score and I think that will develop into a strength for this team. We do not have a lot of experience and the three returners we do have back, really only two (Aaron Patterson, Joe Atang) played last year. Denver Mack redshirted last year. We might struggle early until some of these freshman get some games under their belt." You open the year with three straight at home. Did you do that on purpose because of the inexperience? What is your philosophy in regard to scheduling? Marcopulos: "Most coaches try to play as many home games as possible. I know we are very difficult to bet at home. However, it is important to get your team on the road early and find out how they will react to a different environment. Usually it pays off for conference play. Some teams travel better than others. Some of our more experienced teams played better on the road than at home. I purposely scheduled home games early so we could get some experience in a more comfortable atmosphere. Of course, playing at home entitles you to nothing. I'm sure Butte, Canada, and Alameda will be ready to play to open the year." How do you think the Seahawks stack up in the Coast Conference South this year? Marcopulos: "I think we stack up well. We have several teams that can win our league. We are one of them. The conference is improving as well. DeAnza, Gavilan and Hartnell all have hired new coaches within the last year. They will all continue to improve. I'm sure it will just get more competitive. It will be interesting to see how we come together and improve as the year unfolds." 6 Cabrillo Men's Basketball 2006-2007 Schedule DAY DATE OPPONENT SITE Sun Oct 29 NorCal Jamboree (scrimmage) Chico Sat Nov 4 Foothill (scrimmage) Los Altos Hills TUE NOV 7 BUTTE COLLEGE APTOS 7:00 PM FRI NOV 10 CANADA COLLEGE APTOS 7:00 PM TUE NOV 21 ALAMEDA COLLEGE APTOS 7:00 PM Fri-Sun Nov 24-26 Diablo Valley College Tournament Pleasant Hill WED NOV 29 PORTERVILLE COLLEGE APTOS 6:00 PM SAT-SUN DEC 2-3 CABRILLO COLLEGE TOURNAMENT APTOS TBA Thur-Sat Dec 7-9 Hartnell College Tournament Salinas TBA Sat Dec 16 College of the Siskiyous Weed 5:00 pm Tue Dec 19 Santa Rosa Junior College Santa Rosa 8:00 pm Fri Dec 22 Las Positas College Livermore 7:00 pm SAT DEC 30 OHLONE COLLEGE APTOS 7:00 PM WED JAN 3 * HARTNELL COLLEGE APTOS 7:00 PM Fri Jan 5 * Monterey Peninsula College Monterey 7:00 pm SAT JAN 13 * GAVILAN COLLEGE APTOS 7:00 PM Wed Jan 17 * West Valley College Saratoga 7:00 pm SAT JAN 20 * DEANZA COLLEGE APTOS 7:00 PM Wed Jan 24 * San Jose City College San Jose 7:00 pm Sat Jan 27 * Hartnell College Salinas 7:00 pm WED JAN 31 * MONTEREY PENINSULA COLLEGE APTOS 7:00 PM Wed Feb 7 * Gavilan College Gilroy 7:00 pm SAT FEB 10 * WEST VALLEY COLLEGE APTOS 7:00 PM Wed Feb 14 * DeAnza College Cupertino 7:00 pm SAT FEB 17 * SAN JOSE CITY COLLEGE APTOS 7:00 PM Wed Feb 21 Regional Playoffs: Play-In Game TBA TBA Fri/Sat Feb 23/24 Regional Playoffs (1st Round) TBA TBA Sat Mar 3 Regional Final (2nd Round) TBA TBA Fri-Sun Mar 9-11 State Playoffs Final Eight Fresno (Selland Arena) TBA BOLD CAPS indicate Home Game * indicates Coast Conference game 7 TIME TBA 12:00 pm TBA HEAD COACH T ONY M ARCOPULOS H EAD C OACH 7th Season CSU Stanislaus, 1987 University of the Pacific, 1990 When Tony Marcopulos became Cabrillo’s head coach on April 3, 2000, he envisioned a bright future for the Seahawk basketball program. His years of experience, first as a player and then as a NCAA Division 1 assistant coach had prepared him for the task ahead: Taking over a program that had been losing for the last two decades and turning it into a winner. Six years later, the Cabrillo Basketball Program is thriving under Marcopulos’ direction. His teams are successful both on the court and in the classroom. Plus, many former Seahawks have continued their education and playing careers at 4-year schools. Coach Marcopulos knows the important role community colleges play in the development of young student-athletes. He also knows very well what Div. I programs across the country are looking for in a student-athlete. His experience, knowledge, passion and work ethic have made him an excellent addition to the Cabrillo College Athletic Department and an invaluable asset to the men that he coaches. AT CABRILLO In his six seasons as Head Coach, Tony Marcopulos has turned Cabrillo into a consistent contender, guiding the Seahawks to a record of .500 or better in 3 straight seasons. 20052006 also marked the 4th straight season with at least 14 victories. Over the past two seasons, Cabrillo's overall record was a very competitive 31-25, including a 14-10 record in Coast Conference action. The Seahawks have been to the play-offs in 4 out of 6 seasons under Coach Marcopulos. The Seahawks have also been among the state's best defensive teams, finishing in the top 10 in Team Defense (fewest points allowed per game) in each of the past 4 seasons. PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE Marcopulos was a full-time Division I Assistant Coach for 12 seasons (1988-2000). He began his coaching career at the University of the Pacific (Stockton, CA), where he worked alongside Head Coach Bob Thomason for 11 seasons. Then, he joined the men's basketball staff at the University of Portland for the 1999-2000 season. Coach Marcopulos has first-hand experience in building a basketball program. When he 8 TONY MARCOPULOS joined Thomason in Stockton, UOP had enjoyed only one winning season during the previous nine years. That quickly changed. During the next eleven years Pacific had eight winning seasons. Those 11 seasons included many highlights; two separate 16 game winning streaks (1997-1998), the 1997 Big West conference championship, the 1998 Big West Western Division championship, the school's first NCAA tournament appearance in almost 20 years (1997), the school's first ever NIT tournament appearance (1998), and the second longest home court winning streak in the country behind Kansas at 32 in a row (1998). Pacific also boasted a 90% graduation rate over that same time period. Perhaps Marcopulos’ most publicized achievement at Pacific was his successful work with a big and athletic, but inexperienced and untutored Nigerian named Michael Olowokandi. At 7’1” and 265 pounds, the Pacific staff had a lot to work with but very little time to produce a successful basketball player. After three years of hard work and a commitment to basketball fundamentals, the Los Angeles Clippers selected Olowokandi with the first overall pick in the 1998 NBA draft (Michael signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2003, and currently with the Boston Celtics). Sports Illustrated’s cover story opened with Marcopulos’ startling first phone conversation with the future NBA draft pick and the trials and tribulations associated with the development of a young man with so much potential. PLAYING CAREER Marcopulos is a native of the Bay Area and attended Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton. As a point guard, he led the Dons to four league championships and a four-year record of 89-10. Upon graduating high school in 1982, Marcopulos went on to Columbia Junior College in Columbia, California (82-84) where he played for Bob Thomason and recorded seasons of 17-14 and 27-7. He then accepted a basketball scholarship to attend Carroll College in Helena, Montana (84-85) before following Coach Thomason to California State University, Stanislaus (Turlock, CA) (85-87) where he helped lead the team to a conference title and a Division III NCAA tournament berth in 1987. EDUCATION Marcopulos received his undergraduate degree in Physical Education from Stanislaus State University. He later earned a Masters of Arts degree in Teaching (Physical Education) and a secondary school teaching credential (Physical Education) from the University of the Pacific. A member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, Tony and his wife Stephanie live in Aptos with their daughter Emma. 9 What Division 1 Coaches Are Saying About Stan Morrison Athletic Director UC Riverside "The manner in which Coach Marcopulos has improved the program year after year at Cabrillo College does not surprise anyone who has ever known him as a coach and man. He has a plan and is willing to pay a great physical and emotional investment to see the plan through to a championship conclusion. I would have wanted my son to play for Tony Marcopulos. I cannot pay him a higher tribute." Bob Thomason Head Basketball Coach University of the Pacific "Tony (Marcopulos) was a great asset to the University of the Pacific during his 11 years as my assistant (coach). He truly understands the game of basketball, but more importantly he understands the players. Tony is a great communicator which has helped him get the most out of each and every player. Tony is also a tremendous worker. He puts 100% into everything he does. Whether it is changing a flat tire in the rain or putting together a game plan to beat Georgetown, he is always working hard. Most importantly, Tony is a great person. He cares deeply about all his student-athletes and wants to see them succeed in basketball and in life. Seth Greenberg Head Basketball Coach Virginia Tech University "Tony Marcopulos is the total package. He can teach, develop players, and is committed to their fulfilling their academic potential. He has the unique advantage of having what it takes to help his players play at the next level and has the expertise to help them achieve their goals." Jamie Dixon Head Basketball Coach University of Pittsburgh “Tony (Marcopulos) has been around a successful team his entire career. He has taken programs to heights never before reached. Having known Tony since he started at Pacific, I look for the rise at Cabrillo College to continue.” 10 Coach Marcopulos and Cabrillo Basketball Alan Major Asst. Basketball Coach Ohio State University "It is not surprising that Tony Marcopulos is doing a such a great job at Cabrillo College . His time spent at Pacific was a great training ground for him to become a Head Coach. I'm sure that Cabrillo Basketball will continue to rise to another level." Randy Bennett Head Basketball Coach Saint Mary's College "Tony Marcopulos is a tireless worker. His work ethic and persistence as a Head Assistant in Division I have translated well as Head Coach. He is a rare commodity in this day and age, and I am excited to witness the progress of his committment at Cabrillo College." Stew Morrill Head Basketball Coach Utah State University "I have known Tony Marcopulos for a long time and I have watched him grow as a person and a coach. He has always impressed me with the way he teaches his philosophy of the game of basketball. His players have always demonstrated a great deal of discipline on the court and in the classroom." Brad Holland Head Basketball Coach University of San Diego "I've known Tony Marcopulos since the 1990's when he was an assistant at UOP. I knew then he would make an outstanding head coach one day. He's got a great understanding of the game, he's a very good recruiter, he's organized and knows how to handle players. It is no surprise to me Coach Marcopulos is creating an excellent program at Cabrillo College." 11 C ABRILLO C OLLEGE Q UICK FACTS Enrollment: 15,300 students President: Brian King Athletic Dir: Dale Murray Head Coach: Tony Marcopulos Asst. In the short time since, he has made significant progress in building a foundation for both present and future success. Prior to beginning his 7th season, he discussed his thoughts regarding Cabrillo College, his team, his program and just what can be expected: WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE SOME OF THE STRENGTHS OF THIS COLLEGE? MARCOPULOS: The location of the campus and it’s close proximity to the beach obviously stand out as tremendous assets to this college. Cabrillo, as an institution of higher education, is one of the truly outstanding community colleges in the state of California. We have instructors here that are committed to the growth and development of students. Lastly, Cabrillo is the kind of place where a student-athlete can get an outstanding two-year education at an affordable cost, play intercollegiate athletics and enjoy college social life in one of the most beautiful areas of the country. WHAT WILL YOU PROMISE A STUDENT-ATHLETE IF HE COMES TO CABRILLO? MARCOPULOS: What first comes to mind is what I will NOT promise. I will not ever promise a recruit playing time....ever. They are promised zero minutes. They will earn whatever amount of playing time they get. However, there are some things that I’m willing to make promises about. First, I promise that they will go to class each and everyday. Although I can’t guarantee that each player will graduate, I will say that only one player who completed all four semesters with us failed to graduate. In my eighteen years of collegiate coaching I have only coached four student-athletes who did not graduate who finished their eligibility. I promise they will attend and be in an atmosphere that will be conducive to attaining a degree. Second, I promise they will be a much better player when they leave Cabrillo than when they came. They will work harder on their game and be in better shape than they have ever been in their life. They will be coached everyday. Lastly, I promise they will be better people when they leave us than when they came. Not because they are hanging around me everyday, although I do intend to have a very positive impact on their life, but because I will surround them with teammates that are good people. It stands to reason that if you are surrounded with good people, people of character, then that will impact you in a positive way. Clearly, the opposite is true as well. Our teams are recruited based in large part on an individual’s character. Go to class, get better, be a better person. Other than that, I don’t make promises. WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST STRENGTHS OF THE BASKETBALL PROGRAM? MARCOPULOS: Our commitment to the development of our players is easily our biggest strength. Student-athletes in this program will be challenged to excel in the classroom as well as on the basketball court. We make every effort to ensure that our players receive the best college basketball experience possible. WHERE DOES CABRILLO RATE AMONG COAST CONFERENCE CONTENDERS? MARCOPULOS: Our conference is one of the best in the state. The Coast Conference South is perennially advancing several teams deep into the post conference tournament championship. We will contend for the conference championship. Winning it and advancing to the State Championship is our only goal. 15 2006-2007 CABRILLO COLLEGE S EAHAWKS THE PLAYERS 16 SOPHOMORES #3 JASON COLE 5’-9 GUARD SOPHOMORE BROOKLYN, NY EASTSIDE HIGH SCHOOL #5 JOE ATANG 5’-10 GUARD SOPHOMORE HOUSTON, TX ST. Despite late season injuries, Cabrillo finished the season strong, winning 9 of their last 14 games. Their 7-5 record in Coast Conference play earned the Seahawks a 3rd-place finish behind top-ranked West Valley College and #7 San Jose City College. Despite late season injuries, the Seahawks finished the season strong, winning 9 of their last 14 games. With a record of 7-5 in the very competitive Coast Conference South, Cabrillo earned a 3rd-place finish behind only top-ranked West Valley College and #7 San Jose City College. A season-ending ankle injury to point guard Jeff Scott was a critical blow in the middle of conference play. The Seahawks, who were tied for first place at the time of his injury, were not able to maintain that same high level of play. Mike Scott, Jon Fontenberry, and Aaron Patterson each earned All-Conference recognition. Once again the Seahawks were one of the best defensive teams in the state, ranking 7th out of over 90 teams by allowing only 64.1 ppg. 2004-2005 SEASON One of the Cabrillo basketball program's best seasons in a long time ended with the Seahawks having earned 17 victories, the most wins under Head Coach Tony Marcopulos. Cabrillo's winning percentage has improved in each of the 5 seasons with Coach Marcopulos at the helm. For the 2nd time in 3 years the Cabrillo College Seahawks played their way into the NorCal Regional finals before losing to top-ranked and eventual undefeated state champion Fresno City College. The Seahawks finished the regular season ranked #10 in Northern California and 20th in the state. Cabrillo finished 3rd in the extremely competitive Coast Conference South. 2003-2004 SEASON For the first time in over a decade, the Seahawks finished the season with a winning record, 14 wins against 13 losses. However, budget cuts reduced the state tournament field from 64 participants statewide to only 32. The Seahawks would have been the 17th seed in Northern California and were therefore not included in the field. This was the first time in Marcopulos' tenure that his team did not made the play-offs. 2002-2003 SEASON The 2002-2003 season was a breakthrough season for the Seahawks. For the first time in California State tournament history, the 28th seed advanced to the Regional Final as the Seahawks scored upset wins over 5th-seed Feather River College and 12th-seed Skyline College. The Seahawks finished with an overall record of 15-18, the most Cabrillo wins since 1985. Their 62-55 win over San Jose City College was the first victory over that school since 1970. All four sophomores continued their education and basketball careers at four-year institutions. On the academic side, the team’s year-end GPA was 3.1. 2001-2002 SEASON For the first time in school history the Seahawks made the playoffs in back-to-back seasons. The 17 wins in the last two seasons are more wins than the previous 5 seasons combined.
