1. Opening remarks
-Social security numbers for international students have been delayed due to change in process
effective August 13, 2013. Students are required to register their local address and the social
security card is sent to student rather than the number being printed on the work permit. This
change will result in payroll delays. Requests to have tuition reassessed will need to be sent to the
Graduate School to process. Please encourage students to come ten days earlier to avoid delays.
-Mark your calendars to attend a personnel specialist training on November 13 th.

veterinarians around the world. Topics include international uses and attitudes about
animals, problems the world faces pertaining to livestock production, and social tensions.

Medicine.

The grading basis is being changed so that students will receive a letter grade for this
course instead of credit/no credit and the course pre-requisite has been updated.

Course Description: Professional practice and organizational management of early
childhood care and education programs; financial and personnel management,
program development, and community relations.

Pre-Requisite: FSHS 450 or consent of instructor
There is need for professionals in the field of early care and education to be skilled
and knowledgeable in administering programs.

ADD:
CS 832. Communication with the Agricultural Worker. (2) II. An elective course
focused on improving communications between veterinarians and animal caretakers in
production agriculture and equine industries. The course will use face to face discussions
and online seminars in KSOL to teach communications skills with a focus on common
terminology and vocabulary necessary for effective communication. Audio-visual teaching
utilizing immersion philosophy is utilized to provide the material course work. PR.: 2nd or
3rd year standing in the College of Veterinary Medicine or graduate student.
RATIONALE:
An elective course focused on improving communications between veterinarians and
animal caretakers in production agriculture and equine industries. This course will focus
on common terminology and vocabulary necessary for effective communication.

state, federal, and global policies on youth, as
well as the impact of family and cultural
influences on positive youth outcomes. They

management of youth- serving organizations.
The certificate requires 12 credit hours chosen
from a list of approved courses in addition to a
one-hour foundations course.
This program is a collaborative, multiinstitution effort with course work delivered
via the Internet/World Wide Web. Faculty from

University, University of Missouri, University of
Nebraska and North Dakota State University
share knowledge and expertise in youth
development. These land-grant universities are
members of the Great Plains-Interactive
Distance Education Alliance and have a history
of success in distance education.
Admission to the certificate program follows
the standard Graduate School admission
requirements and processes. Applications are
accepted twice (Feb. 1, Sept. 1) in each
academic year.
The Youth Development Administration Graduate Certificate program has had no admissions
or enrollments. Consequently, discontinuation is merited (University Handbook Appendix K Section B(2d).

5. Graduate Student Affairs Committee
Joy Kozar presented report for the chair. She reported the committee will be reviewing
submissions from the college nominations for Distinguished Thesis Award and GTA Excellence
in Teaching Award. The committee will also spend the semester discussing annual reviews of
students and creating a task force to look at co-authorship of joint thesis.
6. Graduate School Committee on Planning
David Yetter presented the following motions on behalf of the Committee on Planning.
Chapter 6: Section B: By-Laws of the Graduate Council, Section B.3
CURRENT:
No academic unit may have more than one member on the Graduate Council. A
representative may serve no more than two terms consecutively.
PROPOSED:
No graduate program area within an academic unit may have more than one
member on the Graduate Council. A representative may serve no more than two
terms consecutively.
7. Graduate School Committee on Assessment and Review
Royce Ann Collins, chair, reported the committee will be working this semester on 2011 and
2012 mid-cycle reports to offer feedback to the departments. Final reports will be due from
programs by January.
8. Graduate Student Council Information – Tammy Sonnentag, President
-The GSC mixer held after the “Intergalactic Nemesis” performance was a success.
-Ice cream social will be held October 3 from 1:00-3:00 on the east side of Fairchild Hall.
-Research and the State abstracts are due October 5 by 5:00 p.m.
-October 30th the restaurant Local will be donating 100% of daily profits to GSC
-Research and the State will be November 6 from 8:00-5:00 p.m. in the Union
-A new secretary has been named: (need name)
9. University Research and Scholarship

10. Other business
- Dr Shanklin gave a presentation on Pathways Through Graduate School and Into Careers. This
powerpoint was created by the Council of Graduate Schools and is available by e-mail request to
those interested.
