Trewyn at 3:35 p.m. in Room 213, Student Union. 1) Opening remarks. Ron Trewyn welcomed everyone to the 2005-2006 academic year. Daryl Youngman was introduced as the Hale Library liaison. He will begin attending the Graduate Council meeting on a regular basis. The Graduate Student Council will return to having two representatives at the Council meetings as stated in the Graduate Council Constitution. Typically this will be the president and president-elect. 2) Minutes. The minutes of the May 3, 2005 meeting were approved as presented. 3) Graduate School Actions and Announcements a) Announcements - Carol Shanklin announced that Randall Regier is the first K-State graduate to receive a Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarship. He was one of 10 students selected nationwide for the fine or performing arts division. This scholarship will provide him with up to $50,000 annually for a maximum of 6 years to complete his graduate education. - Ron Trewyn reported that the minimum stipends for graduate assistants beginning fall 2006 is currently under review. It will most likely increase by $500. Once finalized, a memo will be sent to graduate programs with more information. - Carol Shanklin is in need of faculty volunteers for an Electronic Thesis, Dissertation and Report (EDTR) Faculty Advisory Committee. This group will meet once a semester. Introduction to fundamental concepts in structural dynamics; free and forced vibration of single and multiple degrees of freedom systems with and without damping, numerical methods for linear and non-linear dynamic analysis, and basics of the earthquake response and design of structures. Three hours rec. a week. Pr.: MATH 240, ME 512, CE 537 or equivalent. CE 824. Strength and Deformation of Geo-materials (3). I, in alternate years. Mathematical and physical modeling in geotechnical engineering. Advanced laboratory testing of soils. Plasticity, dilatancy, failure and critical state. Finite element applications: Laboratory strength tests and/or simple field problems. Three hrs. rec. per week. Pr.: CE 522 or equivalent. CE 872. Transportation Safety (3) II , in alternate years. Importance of transportation safety, crash data collection, common crash databases, traffic safety studies, accident data analysis, identification of high crash locations, traffic control devices as related to safety, special population group safety, traffic conflict studies, accident reconstruction, statistical methods in crash data analysis and traffic calming. Three hrs. rec. per week. Pr: CE 572 or consent from the instructor. EECE 888. Power System Stability and Control. (3) Every third year. Introduction to power system stability and control. System device modeling and control issues are introduced for the purpose of studying various aspects of power system stability. Transient, small signal, and voltage stability topics are covered. Several stability analysis projects for multimachine systems are included. Three hours rec. a week. Pr.: EECE 581 and 685. MANGT 660. Demand-Based Management for Supply Chain. (3) I. This course provides a framework of how the demand side of the supply chain should interface with supply side. The focus will be on integrating specific tools and emerging issues including strategy, forecasting, inventory management, risk pooling, coordination, information sharing, and global supply chain management. Pr.: MANGT 421. 5) Graduate Student Affairs Committee The committee’s first meeting will be the third week of September. 6) Graduate Committee on Planning The committee’s first meeting will be the third week of September. 7) Graduate Student Council Information David Olds (president-elect) summarized the Graduate Student Council’s(GSC) activities of the last academic year. Over the summer, members of the GTA/GRA Committee worked with the Graduate School and the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning to organize a workshop for graduate students with teaching responsibilities. More than 190 GTAs attended the event which followed graduate student orientation on August 17th. Announcements: - Ice Cream Social will be Thursday, September 22, 2005 from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. at the East entrance of Fairchild Hall. 8) Graduate Committee on Assessment and Review The formation of another Graduate Council committee to address assessment and review issues was proposed by Ron Trewyn. Following discussion it was decided to assign to the Committee on Planning the task of determining how to incorporate the Graduate School Committee on Assessment and Review within the Graduate Council. 3 9) University Research and Scholarship Ron Trewyn introduced Paul Lowe, Assistant Vice Provost for Research and Director PreAward Services. Paul provided and handout and introduced the subject of export control as it pertains to research. The issue of allowing foreign nationals access to confidential information in the laboratories can be a violation of federal regulations (export control) in some cases. Graduate faculty need to be aware of these regulations. Announcements: - The Targeted Excellence Reception and Informational Session has been scheduled for Thursday, September 22, 2005 from 3:30-5:00 at Ramada Inn. - A list of fellowship and grant opportunities can be found in the Graduate Council’s September agenda. 10) Caucus Meetings Council members broke into academic caucuses to decided on committee assignments.
