Trewyn at 3:35 p.m. in Room 213, Student Union. 1) Opening remarks. The open forum on targeted excellence held Friday, October 3, 2003 that was recommended by the Graduate Council was a success. Approximately 120 faculty attended to share ideas for interdepartmental research projects. A registration form is available for the NCR workshop to be hosted by KU on October 27th. All K-State departments are encouraged to send a representative. 2) Minutes. The minutes of the September 2, 2003 meeting were approved as corrected. 3) Graduate School Actions and Announcements a) Appointments for Graduate Faculty Membership Name Fred M. Duer LeAnn M. The new Student Governing Association funding guidelines no longer allow GSC to provide travel grants as they have in the past. The committee has also resumed its work on the graduate student honor code. A draft should be available at the next meeting. The plan is for the honor code to cover academics and research. The issue was discussed. 6) Graduate School Committee on Planning Gita Ramaswamy (chair) reported that the committee has been looking at creating student learning outcomes for graduate students campuswide. The committee has been contacting departments for feedback and hopes to have a draft for the next council meeting. 7) Graduate Student Council Information DeAnn Presley (president) reported that the fall Ice Cream Social was attended by more than 300 graduate students. A representative from Science-New Wave attend to answer questions and demonstrate this resource website to which the university subscribes. The GSC Travel Grant Committee has received approximately 45 applications for travel assistance. The committee will review and make recommendations to the SGA budget committee. DeAnn announced that K-State graduate students have been invited to a poster session at the Capitol scheduled for January 28th. Graduate students that have posters with a Kansas theme are encouraged to join the K-State delegation that plans to participate. 9) Other business and announcements A work group on electronic theses and dissertations has been formed including staff from the library. They will have their first meeting has been scheduled for October 30th. Carol Shanklin announced that she has received information regarding Midwestern Association of Graduate School outstanding thesis awards. Faculty are encourage to contact Carol to nominate their master's students. Deadline-January. Council was adjourned at 4:35 p.m.
