Construct a Chemistry Learning Center in the 600
building.
Support current offerings, which have expanded
significantly in the last 6 -7 years, by acquiring
additional 100% 10 months Laboratory
Technician.
Remodel/Enlarge the chemical stockroom space
in the 600 building.
Acquire an additional laboratory in the 600
building connected to the chemical stockroom.

A Chemistry Learning Center will provide students with a space in
which to study where they can find content related materials
(textbooks, model kits, study guides), congregate in study groups
and form natural cohorts, utilize whiteboards, have access to
computers with content related software, and have access to tutors.
The Chemistry Learning Center will also serve as a home for
ACCESS SI sessions and instructor office hours.
We currently have two 10 month contract Lab Technicians. One is
at 100% and the other at 80% This only meets a portion of our staff
support needs. A 20% position previously held was lost due to
budget cuts. Furthermore, the 80% employee is due to retire in a
few years. We remain at a breaking point under our current load and
level of support. Instruction and safety are being compromised.
Further expansion is not feasible without additional Lab Tech
support. We now recommend in total 120% of a 10 month contract
position.
Our stockroom is of insufficient size to adequately service our
current offerings. Further expansion in offerings is not sustainable
without providing appropriate infrastructure to support instruction.
This was to be addressed by the planned remodel of the former
dental hygiene end of the 600 building during Summer and Fall of
2012, but is not currently in the plans due to budget constraints.
CHEM 1A is a current bottleneck for science and engineering
students. Additional sections cannot be added in Fall because lab
space is not available. The planned remodel of the former dental
hygiene end of the 600 building during Summer and Fall of 2012
will add an additional lab room. The lab will not be computer
enabled and therefore not suitable for CHEM 1A, however, it will
allow CHEM 30B and CHEM 2 classes currently taught in 606 (a
computer enabled lab) to be relocated, freeing up space for
additional CHEM 1A sections.

Acquire an additional lecture hall in the 600
building.

Goal/Recommendation
X
Together with biology and the other programs offering classes in the
600 building, we are now at maximum lecture room usage during
peak daytime hours. An additional 100 student capacity lecture
room in the 600 building would allow us to offer more cost efficient
scheduling of multi-section lectures. The planned remodel of the
former dental hygiene end of the 600 building during Summer and
Fall of 2012 will add two additional lecture rooms and remove one.
There will be a net gain of one large lecture space.
