Currently posted Internal Deadlines: http://www.k-state.edu/research/funding/bulletins/bul13/limits13/index.htm GENERAL 8-1 Nanotechnology Undergraduate Education (NUE) in Engineering (NSF) This solicitation aims at introducing nanoscale science, engineering, and technology through a variety of interdisciplinary approaches into undergraduate engineering education. The focus of the FY 2014 competition is on nanoscale engineering education with relevance to devices and systems and/or on the societal, ethical, economic and/or environmental issues relevant to nanotechnology. Recognizing disciplinary differences and priorities, NSF’s investment in research and development in undergraduate STEM education encompasses a range of approaches. These approaches include: experiential learning, assessment/metrics of learning and practice, scholarships, foundational education research, professional development/institutional change, formal and informal learning environments, and undergraduate disciplinary research. Both individually and integrated in a range of combinations, these approaches can lead to outcomes including: developing the STEM and STEM-related workforce, advancing science, broadening participation in STEM, educating a STEM-literate populace, improving K-12 STEM education, Vol. 23, No. 8 encouraging life-long learning, and building capacity in higher education. Only 1 proposal may be submitted by a US academic institution as the lead institution with the following exception: A US academic institution may submit a second proposal if it is focused on the societal, ethical, economic and/or environmental issues relevant to nanotechnology. Given this expectation, it is vital investigators and students travel to a NASA center if selected for an award. Ideally the faculty member, student, and research host become co-participants in a promising research effort. Indeed, the PDG award should lead to sustained collaboration, joint publications, and, most important, future grant proposals. The KNEP PDG program cannot support proposals augmenting existing funded or well-established research projects. Email: scott.miller@wichita.edu Deadline: 3/28/2014 8-2 Seed Research Initiation (SRI) Grant (KS/NASA) With the support from NASA and the Kansas Board of Regents – the Kansas NASA EPSCoR Program (KNEP) is preparing to award a Seed Research Initiation (SRI) grant under the KNEP Research Infrastructure Development (RID) program. SRI grants are designed to assist investigators in starting research projects having a high probability for sustained growth and value to NASA and Kansas. A successful SRI grant leads to productive collaborations, joint publications, and additional grant awards. A direct impact on state economic development is also extremely desirable. Ultimately, the goal is to form infrastructure development goals. Awards are competitive, with a strong emphasis on: Addressing NASA and Kansas interests (required); Developing new, meaningful, and sustained collaborations (in Kansas and with NASA); Involving U.S. students, especially underrepresented and underserved Kansas undergraduate and graduate students, in research (required); Strengthening collaboration among industry, government agencies, and academia; Exploring new and unique R&D opportunities; Generating publications and future EPSCoR and non-EPSCoR grant submissions; and Contributing to Kansas’ economic development. The KNEP SRI program cannot support proposals augmenting existing funded or well-established research projects. Email: scott.miller@wichita.edu Deadline: 4/4/2014 8-3 Partnership Development Grant (PDG) (KS/NASA) With support from NASA and the Kansas Board of Regents - the Kansas NASA EPSCoR Program (KNEP) is preparing to award Partnership Development Grants (PDG) to Kansas investigators, under the KNEP Research Infrastructure Development (RID) program. These grants are intended to facilitate the development of beneficial and promising NASA collaborations. The PDG recipient is expected to initiative, develop, and AGRICULTURE 8-4 Agriculture and Food Research Initiative: Water for Agriculture Challenge Area (USDA) In FY 2014, NIFA initiates a new challenge area to address critical water resources issues such as drought, excess soil moisture, flooding, quality and others in an agricultural context. Current drought conditions in the west, as well as drought conditions across the country in recent years, make the initiation of this new challenge area particularly timely. Continued significant variations from the historical rate of water supply, demand and quality are projected to have major impacts on agricultural, forest, and rangeland production systems. This new program area within AFRI will be coordinated with and leverage efforts in the Agricultural Production and Climate Change and Sustainable Bioenergy challenge areas, and help solve critical water problems in agricultural, rural and urbanizing areas across the United States. The program will focus on developing solutions for water management that link food, water, climate, energy, and environmental issues. Funding will be used to develop management practices, technologies, and tools for farmers, ranchers, forest owners and managers, public decision-makers, public and private managers and citizens to improve water resource quantity and quality. NIFA’s approach will link social, economic, and behavioral sciences with traditional biophysical sciences and engineering to address regional scale issues with shared hydrological processes, and meteorological and basin characteristics. BETO’s mission is to engage in research and development and demonstration at increasing scale activities to transform renewable biomass resources into commercially viable, high-performance biofuels, and bioproducts and biopower that enable biofuel production. To accomplish this mission, BETO develops a strategic plan, or multi-year program plan, to identify the technical challenges and barriers that need to be overcome. However, BETO recognizes that there may be novel and potentially disruptive ideas that do not necessarily align well with BETO’s current multi-year program plan yet still meet the goals and mission of BETO. The Bioenergy Incubator Program is intended to identify these potentially impactful technologies and solutions that are not meaningfully addressed in BETO’s strategic plan or project portfolio. It is NOT intended to fund projects that are incremental improvements to current products or processes or for established work in BETO’s strategic plan or current portfolio. The purpose of this Notice to provide potential applicants advance notice that the BETO intends to issue a FOA titled Bioenergy Technologies Incubator.
