Achievement Pathway: Lawrence
Lawrence achieved well in his BGE mostly at third and fourth levels. He had not yet successfully
achieved third level in maths.
Building on his achievements and areas of specialism in S4, Lawrence undertook one-year
programmes of study in music and art & design working towards N5 and towards N4 in English,
biology and Skills for Work: business management. He began a two-year course of study in maths in
order to develop his confidence in this area and to provide more time to further develop his skills. He
also continued programmes of learning in PE, RE and HWB and benefited from opportunities for
universal support throughout his senior phase. Lawrence achieved well in all programmes of study in
S4.
Lawrence had investigated a number of degree courses in art & design related areas. He found that
for the majority of these courses he would also require English at Higher level and maths to at least
N5. In consultation with the school and his parents, he decided on one-year programmes of study in
art & design and music at Higher level and Skills for Work: business management at N5. They agreed
that a two-year programme of study over S5/S6 was the best route to success in Higher English.
In S6, Lawrence continued with the programme of study in English and progressed onto Advanced
Higher art & design and Advanced Higher music as well as N5 maths. As a prefect he was expected
to lead a project within the school and decided to organise a Festive Fair. He was responsible for
putting together a small team to manage the event and to liaise on a regular basis with a member of
school staff. As a result of the successful event, Lawrence was asked to make a selection of his own
designs, made from recycled knitwear, to be sold as part of a local social enterprise initiative. This
gave him knowledge and understanding of marketing products which is likely to be very useful in his
future career as well as accreditation through the Leadership Award.
Lawrence wanted to further develop his portfolio of textile designs successfully and following
discussion with his parents and school staff decided to apply to study HNC in art & design with a view
to transferring to a degree course the following year.
