Orientation for ALL NEW INTERNATIONAL Students
Forum Hall, Union ground floor
This orientation is required for all new international students. Additionally, all new international
students must check-in with International Student and Scholar Services (104 International
Student Center) and the Graduate School (103 Fairchild Hall) upon their arrival to KSU.
Please visit the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) website for more
information about check-in procedures and about other welcome and orientation activities for
international students.

Graduate School Orientation for ALL NEWLY ADMITTED Graduate Students*

*All newly admitted graduate students include graduate students who are brand new to K-State AND
those who have previously completed a degree program at K-State but are beginning their first
semester as a graduate student.

Welcome and Overview - Graduate School Dean and Associate Dean
Receive important information about Graduate School requirements, deadlines, and
procedures that are unique to graduate study. Learn which Graduate School staff
members are best able to assist you at certain stages of your graduate career.

Special Performance and Discussion – School of Music, Theatre, and Dance
Theatre masters students will give a theatrical performance to introduce you to
important Graduate School terms, concepts, and policies as well as resources on
campus available to assist you with unfamiliar or challenging situations you may
encounter as a graduate student.

Scott Jones, Associate Dean of Student Life and Director of Non-Violence Programs
Mr. Scott Jones will provide a brief overview of the Alcohol and Sexual Assault
Prevention (ASAP) online training that all K-State students are required to complete.

Graduate Student Council Presentation
Meet the leaders of the Graduate Student Council (GSC), and learn about the major
initiatives, events, and activities coordinated by the GSC to support K-State graduate
students.
Panel Discussion with Current Graduate Students
Hear from a diverse panel of current K-State graduate students about the excitement
and challenges of graduate student life. The panelists will share personal experiences
and advice on how to have a successful and enjoyable graduate school experience.

Orientation Sessions for Graduate Students on a GTA, GRA, or GA appointment

This event is designed to help new GTAs be successful as they work with students as well as
be better prepared for teaching. (Hosted by the Teaching and Learning Center)

Town Hall, Leadership Studies Building
All graduate students who are beginning an appointment for a graduate teaching assistantship
(GTA), graduate research assistantship (GRA), or graduate assistantship (GA) for the first time
in Spring 2016 should plan to attend this session. The session will provide information on the
following topics:


Acclimating to American Graduate-Level Writing – workshop for international
students
International Student Center

This workshop is designed for international and English Language Learner (ELL) graduate
students. It will focus on transitioning to U.S. graduate-level writing expectations and on writing
issues and frustrations frequently encountered by ELL and international students. Participants
will discuss the impact culture has on writing norms, faculty writing expectations, and much

more. They’ll leave the workshop with a greater understanding of cultural expectations around
writing and increased confidence about their positions on and contributions to a U.S. university
campus.

Graduate programs may host orientation sessions specifically for their graduate students. Activities
listed above are coordinated for graduate students in all disciplines. Graduate students should attend
their program-specific activities (if applicable) as well as the appropriate sessions listed above.
