Projected fall headcount is a gauge of demand and supply.
The current model suggests that demand is driven chiefly by
population growth, graduating high school class sizes, and
county unemployment levels. Enrollment fees increased from $26
to $36 as of Fall 2011, exerting additional downward pressure on
enrollments. This downward pressure is offset somewhat by the
"squeeze down" effect of more CSU and UC eligible students
enrolling at the CCC as fees in those systems increase, as well.
The $10 increase in fees was associated with a 2% reduction in
actual headcount vs. expected headcount. The number and mix
of course offerings is perhaps even more important than demand.
Classes are filling to 95% capacity suggesting that funding cuts
and reduced courses are what is really driving down enrollments.
Projected fall headcount is based on projected county population growth, projected high school graduating class size, and
Santa Cruz County unemployement levels. A Prais-Winsten weighted least squares equation was run in Stata 8 MP to create the
student headcount forecast. This statistical technique properly handles the autocorrelation associated with a time series.
The projection assumes that fees will increase to $49 per unit in Summer 2012, creating downward pressure.

In fall 2009, new ethnicity data collection procedures,
including the option to select multiple ethnicities, were
implemented in compliance with the U.S. Department of
Education.
Only new students who applied and registered during this
period have encountered the new survey. Continuing
students were not re-surveyed; their earlier response (to a
single-choice survey) remains in the system. We expect to see
continued increases in the number of students selecting
multiple ethnicities in the coming years.

Age
The median age is lower than the average age because there are relatively few older students, but the range
of older students' ages is very great, causing the mean age to be substantially higher than the median age.
The median represents the mid-point of the age distribution indicating that half our students are 24 or younger
and half were 24 or older (since Fall 2008). The median is the preferred measure of central tendency for highly
skewed distributions such as this.

Notes:
Cabrillo students were matched with National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) Student Tracker enrollment
data. Transfers are counted when the first four-year-institution enrollment record comes after as when the
student has accumulated at least 12 units at Cabrillo.
Students with enrollments at multiple 4-year institutions were counted at the first institution an enrollment
was reported.
The NSC data match was performed as recently as November 20, 2011, with data from prior
matches incorporated to achieve the most complete Cabrillo transfer dataset.
Under-represented excludes Asians, Whites. Non-respondents are divided among under-represented or
not, in proportion to the valid under-represented rate.
The decrease in transfers to the CSU segment that occurred in 2009-10 is mainly due to fewer transfers to
San Jose State University for that year.

Non-credit courses are excluded. Information on non-credit courses is presented at the end of this section.
Note that " % change " indicates the change from the previous academic year - a one-year change.
Degrees are Associate of Arts or Associate of Science .
Certificates of Achievement require 18 or more units and are recorded on a student's academic transcript.
Skill Certificates require fewer than 18 units and are not recorded on a student's academic transcript.
1
Success = Course enrollment divided by the number of grades A, B, C, or CR awarded
Source: Data Warehouse.
2
Completion = Course enrollment divided by the number of grades A, B, C, D, F, CR, or NC awarded
Source: Data Warehouse.
3
Time to degree or certificate is measured in semesters (2 per year). Individual student award dates are
compared with the semester of a student's first course in the program , counting all intervening semesters,
attending or not. Then, the semesters-to-award values for multiple students are averaged.
4
FTES = total WSCH (all students) divided by 525 and multiplied by 17.0 (the Term Length Multiplier). This is the
formula used for calculating FTES, a major component of annual CCC apportionment. The actual
apportionment calculation looks at other factors such as student residency status, among others.
Source: Datatel XFTE report.
5
WSCH = Weekly Student Contact Hours - the number of hours per week that a course meets times enrollment.
Lab hours are counted at one-third value. WSCH for short-term courses are pro-rated. WSCH for Open-Entry and
Positive hour courses are calculated on actual attendance. WSCH for Independent Study courses are based on
units. Source: Datatel XFTE report.
6
FTEF = Full Time Equivalent Faculty is based on the TU's (teaching units) utilized by the department in classrom
instruction divided by 15. Reassigned time is not included. One FTEF is equal to one instructor load of 15
teaching units in one major term. Source: Datatel XFAS - Facultly Assignment Sheets.
