the first heat race.
SPORT MODIFIEDS
Ocean’s IMCA sport
modified division picked up
five new entrants for 2013.
Alexander Mead, the 2012
Micro 600 champion; San
Jose’s Matt Kile, last year’s
American stock division
champion; 4-Banger and
American stock graduate
Bobby Huckaby Sr.; former
USAC Ford Focus driver
Dennis Simunovich of Hollister and Antioch Speedway 4-Banger champion
Sara Leslie of Campbell.
Leslie joins Adrian DeSousa of Gilroy as the two
female champions, and they
not only add diversity to the
class but are real threats in
this male-dominated sport.
Stephen Hopf opened his
second sport modified season with his first career win
in the 20-lap feature. Mike
Shapiro and Simunovich
finished second and third.
Alex Wilson and Huckaby
completed the top five.
“I owe this win to my family

SPRINT CARS
In the world of sprint cars,
Nick Larson won Ocean’s
traditional non-wing 20-lap
feature, holding off veteran
Tommy La Liberte and Nate
Washam. La Liberte won
the heat race with Washam
and Larson second and
third. Brian Grier and Nick
Foster exchanged the lead
in the early laps. Foster
finished fourth with Grier
completing the top five.
Washam, who will be a
rookie starter in this week’s
Taco Bravo-sponsored season opener, recorded the
fastest race lap of the night
with a 14.698-second lap
during the heat race. He
and La Liberte were the
only two to break into the
14-second bracket.
AMERICAN STOCKS
Tony Oliveira started
where he left off, winning
the American stock main
event Friday night. Oliveira,
second in last year’s standings, won the final race of
the 2012 season. He was
the only Ford driver in the
series to win for features
last year.
The oldest driver at 66,
Oliveira finished ahead of
the two youngest drivers in
the division, Matt Hagio, 15
and Joe Willoughby, 17. Ron
Bonnema and Jerry Supernaw finished fourth and fifth,
respectively.
4-BANGERS
Andy LaVerne, five-time
feature winner in 2012, won
round one in the 4-Banger
division competition. Ryan
Fischer and Robert Gallahar joined him on the
podium.

“Late model stock car
racing has been a mainstay at the speedway for
decades,” Prentice said.

SACRAMENTO — Aaron
Gordon’s brilliant high school
career ended Saturday night
without the third consecutive state championship and
victory over Mater Dei he so
coveted.
Under the bright lights of
the state’s first boys Open
Division championship game,
Gordon and Archbishop
Mitty battled to take the lead
early in the second half. But
Mater Dei and its own superstar, Stanley Johnson, hoisted
the championship trophy at
Sleep Train Arena after holding off Mitty 50-45.
For G ordon, his high
school career ends with two
Division II state titles and
countless records. But like
his brother, Drew, he did not
beat Mater Dei with a state
title on the line.
Gordon led Mitty with 22
points and 20 rebounds. But
Johnson had an even better
scoring performance, leading Mater Dei with 26 points
and 12 rebounds.
“I hate it, I can’t stand it,”
Gordon said. “I’m leaving
high school on a loss. They’re
the only school in the state
Open Division to go out on
a win, and I hate that feeling
with all my heart.”

SACRAMENTO — Aaron
Gordon’s brilliant high school

without the third consecutive state championship and
victory over Mater Dei he so
coveted.
Under the bright lights of
the state’s first boys Open

Gordon and Archbishop

early in the second half. But
Mater Dei and its own superstar, Stanley Johnson, hoisted
the championship trophy at

For G ordon, his high

Division II state titles and
countless records. But like
his brother, Drew, he did not

Gordon led Mitty with 22

Johnson had an even better

Gordon said. “I’m leaving

SPORT MODIFIEDS
Ocean’s IMCA sport
modified division picked up
five new entrants for 2013.
Alexander Mead, the 2012
Micro 600 champion; San
Jose’s Matt Kile, last year’s
American stock division
champion; 4-Banger and
American stock graduate
Bobby Huckaby Sr.; former
USAC Ford Focus driver
Dennis Simunovich of Hollister and Antioch Speedway 4-Banger champion
Sara Leslie of Campbell.
Leslie joins Adrian DeSousa of Gilroy as the two
female champions, and they
not only add diversity to the
class but are real threats in
this male-dominated sport.
Stephen Hopf opened his
second sport modified season with his first career win
in the 20-lap feature. Mike
Shapiro and Simunovich
finished second and third.
Alex Wilson and Huckaby
completed the top five.
“I owe this win to my family
and sponsors for their belief
and support,” Hopf said. “I

SPRINT CARS
In the world of sprint cars,
Nick Larson won Ocean’s
traditional non-wing 20-lap
feature, holding off veteran

Washam. La Liberte won
the heat race with Washam

third. Brian Grier and Nick
Foster exchanged the lead
in the early laps. Foster
finished fourth with Grier
completing the top five.
Washam, who will be a
rookie starter in this week’s
Taco Bravo-sponsored season opener, recorded the
fastest race lap of the night
with a 14.698-second lap
during the heat race. He
and La Liberte were the
only two to break into the
14-second bracket.
AMERICAN STOCKS
Tony Oliveira started
where he left off, winning
the American stock main
event Friday night. Oliveira,
second in last year’s standings, won the final race of
the 2012 season. He was
the only Ford driver in the
series to win for features
last year.
The oldest driver at 66,
Oliveira finished ahead of
the two youngest drivers in
the division, Matt Hagio, 15
and Joe Willoughby, 17. Ron
Bonnema and Jerry Supernaw finished fourth and fifth,
respectively.
4-BANGERS
Andy LaVerne, five-time
feature winner in 2012, won
round one in the 4-Banger
division competition. Ryan

“We had a pretty good
year in 2012,” LaVerne
said. “The goal is to win the
championship. With the
help of my son and the rest
of my family, I think we’re

the heat race.
The life of late-model
stock car racing at the
speedway is in critical condition. Only four cars made
up Friday night’s field.
“Late model stock car
racing has been a mainstay at the speedway for
decades,” Prentice said.
“I know cars and drivers are out there. We just
need to get more of them
here. I hope that happens
soon.”

STATE BASKETBALL
Mitty

By DARREN SABEDRA
Bay Area News Group
SACRAMENTO — Aaron
Gordon’s brilliant high school
career ended Saturday night
without the third consecutive state championship and
victory over Mater Dei he so
coveted.
Under the bright lights of
the state’s first boys Open
Division championship game,
Gordon and Archbishop
Mitty battled to take the lead
early in the second half. But
Mater Dei and its own superstar, Stanley Johnson, hoisted
the championship trophy at
Sleep Train Arena after holding off Mitty 50-45.
For G ordon, his high
school career ends with two
Division II state titles and
countless records. But like
his brother, Drew, he did not
beat Mater Dei with a state
title on the line.
Gordon led Mitty with 22
points and 20 rebounds. But
Johnson had an even better
scoring performance, leading Mater Dei with 26 points
and 12 rebounds.
“I hate it, I can’t stand it,”
Gordon said. “I’m leaving
high school on a loss. They’re
the only school in the state
Open Division to go out on
a win, and I hate that feeling
with all my heart.”
