COLLEGE SWIMMING Cabrillo College’s Michelle Shields took second in two events at the Coast Conference Invitational on Friday at DeAnza College. Promoter John Prentice finished second, followed by Ken Gregg and Mike Meazell. Prentice won the heat race. The life of late-model stock car racing at the speedway is in critical condition. Only four cars made up Friday night’s field. “Late model stock car racing has been a mainstay at the speedway for decades,” Prentice said. “I know cars and drivers are out there. We just need to get more of them here. I hope that happens soon.” Next Friday night is Round 1 of Ocean’s 360 winged sprint car series sponsored by Taco Bravo. Under the bright lights of the state’s first boys Open Division championship game, Gordon and Archbishop Mitty battled to take the lead early in the second half. But Mater Dei and its own superstar, Stanley Johnson, hoisted the championship trophy at Sleep Train Arena after holding off Mitty 50-45. For G ordon, his high school career ends with two Division II state titles and countless records. But like his brother, Drew, he did not beat Mater Dei with a state title on the line. Gordon led Mitty with 22 points and 20 rebounds. But Johnson had an even better scoring performance, leading Mater Dei with 26 points and 12 rebounds. “I hate it, I can’t stand it,” Gordon said. “I’m leaving high school on a loss. Under the bright lights of the state’s first boys Open Division championship game, Gordon and Archbishop Mitty battled to take the lead early in the second half. But Mater Dei and its own superstar, Stanley Johnson, hoisted the championship trophy at Sleep Train Arena after holding off Mitty 50-45. For G ordon, his high school career ends with two Division II state titles and countless records. But like his brother, Drew, he did not beat Mater Dei with a state title on the line. Gordon led Mitty with 22 points and 20 rebounds. But Johnson had an even better scoring performance, leading Mater Dei with 26 points and 12 rebounds. “I hate it, I can’t stand it,” Gordon said. “I’m leaving high school on a loss. La Liberte won the heat race with Washam and Larson second and third. Brian Grier and Nick Foster exchanged the lead in the early laps. Foster finished fourth with Grier completing the top five. Washam, who will be a rookie starter in this week’s Taco Bravo-sponsored season opener, recorded the fastest race lap of the night with a 14.698-second lap during the heat race. He and La Liberte were the only two to break into the 14-second bracket. AMERICAN STOCKS Tony Oliveira started where he left off, winning the American stock main event Friday night. Oliveira, second in last year’s standings, won the final race of the 2012 season. He was the only Ford driver in the series to win for features last year. The oldest driver at 66, Oliveira finished ahead of the two youngest drivers in the division, Matt Hagio, 15 and Joe Willoughby, 17. Ron Bonnema and Jerry Supernaw finished fourth and fifth, respectively. 4-BANGERS Andy LaVerne, five-time feature winner in 2012, won round one in the 4-Banger division competition. COLLEGE SWIMMING Cabrillo College’s Michelle Shields took second in two events at the Coast Conference Invitational on Friday at DeAnza College. Shields swam the 50-meter freestyle in 25,7 seconds and the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.41. Katie McGlucklin was “We had a pretty good year in 2012,” LaVerne said. “The goal is to win the championship. LaVerne and Fischer were heat race winners. LATE-MODEL STOCKS Phil Priddy won Ocean’s late-model stock car 20-lap feature. Promoter John Prentice finished second, followed by Ken Gregg and Mike Meazell. Prentice won the heat race. The life of late-model stock car racing at the speedway is in critical condition. Only four cars made up Friday night’s field. “Late model stock car racing has been a mainstay at the speedway for decades,” Prentice said. “I know cars and drivers are out there. We just need to get more of them here. I hope that happens soon.” Next Friday night is Round 1 of Ocean’s 360 winged sprint car series sponsored by Taco Bravo. STATE BASKETBALL Mitty boys fall short By DARREN SABEDRA Bay Area News Group SACRAMENTO — Aaron Gordon’s brilliant high school career ended Saturday night without the third consecutive state championship and victory over Mater Dei he so coveted. Under the bright lights of the state’s first boys Open Division championship game, Gordon and Archbishop Mitty battled to take the lead early in the second half. But Mater Dei and its own superstar, Stanley Johnson, hoisted the championship trophy at Sleep Train Arena after holding off Mitty 50-45. For G ordon, his high school career ends with two Division II state titles and countless records. But like his brother, Drew, he did not beat Mater Dei with a state title on the line. Gordon led Mitty with 22 points and 20 rebounds. But Johnson had an even better scoring performance, leading Mater Dei with 26 points and 12 rebounds. “I hate it, I can’t stand it,” Gordon said. “I’m leaving high school on a loss. They’re the only school in the state Open Division to go out on a win, and I hate that feeling with all my heart.”
