The Cabrillo College Men’s Basketball Team begins the 2012-2013 season seeking
another championship in the Coast Conference South. They have won championships
in four of the last six years. But these will not be the last for the program. Coach Tony
Marcopulos has led the Seahawks to a winning record in each of the last nine years with
an emphasis on tough defense. Good defense is all about effort, and the young men
who play for Coach Marcopulos play hard in every game. I am very proud of our student
athletes, many of whom will go on to study and play basketball at four-year colleges and
universities. Go Seahawks!

2012-2013 Season Preview:
12-13 Outlook/Preview
The 2012-2013 Cabrillo College Seahawks will be a much different looking team than the 2011-2012 team that went 24-4
overall and 12-0 in the South Division of the Coast Conference. This years team returns no starters from last year and none
of the returners from last year played major minutes. However, the Seahawks have won four of the last six Coast
Conference South Championships and have to be the odds on favorite to win it again. Still, this years group has much to
prove and many challenges ahead of them.
The lack of experience is a concern but not the lack of leadership as returning sophomores Joe Saarem (6’3”, 190, G, Reno,
NV), CJ Grigg (6’7”, 230, C/F, Reno, NV), Dalton Noble (6’1”, 175, G, Salt Lake City, UT), and Robert Myles (5’11”,
165, G, Las Vegas, NV) will be counted on to help navigate this inexperienced group through the schedule. The Seahawks
will also have Redshirt freshman Sean Filley (6’3”, 180, G, El Paso, TX) and Cody Love ( 6’1”, 170, G, Santa Cruz, CA)
available to help lead this team with their experience from last years Championship team.
Newcomers Colin Gruber (6’5”, 190, G/F, Aptos, CA), Phoenix Bills (6’4”, 180, G/F, Edmond, OK), DK White (6’8”, 230,
C, Reno, NV), Warren Jackson (6’, 185, G, Detroit, MI), Tim Acquaye (6’8”, 220, C, Oklahoma City, OK), Giovonni
Gordon (6’5, 200, F, Detroit, MI), Korey Harris (5’10”, 150, G, Powder Springs, GA) and Jake Harrell (6’4”, 210, F/C,
Aptos, CA) will all be fighting for playing time.
The list of newcomers is lead by Gruber who transferred to the Seahawks from Northern Arizona University. Gruber started
for the Lumberjacks as a true freshman and will likely be counted on to contribute heavily right away. Bills had an excellent
prep career at Santa Fe HS in Edmond, OK and should be a valuable addition to the Seahawks. Jackson was also an
outstanding performer in HS and will likely be a major part of the Seahawks run for three consecutive Championships.
Returners Grigg, Saarem and Noble will need to adjust to a much more significant role on this years team as their
production must improve if the Seahawks are to be competitive. Myles is coming off recent knee surgery and will need time
to get ready but could be in the mix in December. Filley and Love will be fighting for playing time as there are minutes with
Myles being injured. Harris and Gordon have also had nothing but trouble with injuries thus far but could play a role as they
get their health back.
Tony Marcopulos enters his 13 year as Head Coach at Cabrillo College and his 25 overall as a collegiate coach. In a recent
interview Marcopulos was asked the following: “What concerns do you have with this group given that you lost your entire
starting five from last years Championship team?” Marcopulos said, “I have a lot of concerns, most of which are keeping
me from sleeping right now. First, most of our returners are relatively inexperienced and while I have confidence they will
be able to do the job there is always a little apprehension until they prove they can do it. The newcomers with the exception
of Colin are freshman and will go through the transition of playing at this level and we all know that transition in anything
in life can be difficult. They all will struggle at times. Colin is in a little different situation in that he has already made much
of the transition after having been away from home at NAU and playing Div. 1 college basketball. He has played at Arizona
in front of 15,000 people. He understands that even at Cabrillo he will need to adjust and work his way through the
transition of playing at our level too. One would think that his playing on the road for us in front of 100 people who are
mostly family and friends will not rattle him too much. This will be a work in process and a product of us getting better and
better every day. I like our team and I like the way we work. If we continue to do so and we can stay healthy and get healthy
will be very good by the time January rolls around and that is when we want to be playing are very best basketball.”

When Tony Marcopulos became Cabrillo’s head coach on April 3, 2000, he envisioned a
bright future for the Seahawk basketball program. His years of experience, first as a player
and then as a NCAA Division 1 assistant coach had prepared him for the task ahead: Taking
over a program that had been losing for the last two decades and turning it into a winner.
Twelve years later, the Cabrillo Basketball Program is thriving under Marcopulos’ direction.
His teams are successful both on the court and in the classroom. Plus, many former
Seahawks have continued their education and playing careers at 4-year schools.
Coach Marcopulos knows the important role community colleges play in the development of
young student-athletes. He also knows very well what Div. I programs across the country are
looking for in a student-athlete. His experience, knowledge, passion and work ethic have
made him an excellent addition to the Cabrillo College Athletic Department and an invaluable
asset to the men that he coaches.
AT CABRILLO
2011-2012 was a history making year. For the first time in school history the Cabrillo College
Men’s Basketball program hosted the first round of the Northern California playoffs, and they
where victorious. Since Marcopulos’ arrival in 2000 the Seahawks have made the steady
climb from what was one of the worst California Community College basketball programs in
the state. For nine consecutive seasons the Seahawks have won 14 or more games. For nine
consecutive seasons the Seahawks have been .500 or better. The Seahawks have been to
the playoffs in ten of the last twelve years. Three of those eight appearances have been to
the Regional Finals. Since 2004 Marcopulos coached teams have finished no lower than third
place in the Coast Conference South Division. During the past five years, the Seahawks have
finished no lower than second with four Conference Championships and a combined
conference record of 50-10.
PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE
Marcopulos was a Division I Assistant Coach for 12 seasons (1988-2000). He began his
coaching career at the University of the Pacific (Stockton, CA), where he worked alongside
Head Coach Bob Thomason for 11 seasons. Then, he joined the men's basketball staff at the
University of Portland for the 1999-2000 season.

Coach Marcopulos has first-hand experience in building a basketball program. When he
joined Thomason in Stockton, UOP had enjoyed only one winning season during the previous
nine years. That quickly changed. During the next eleven years Pacific had eight winning
seasons. Those 11 seasons included many highlights; two separate 16 game winning streaks
(1997-1998), the 1997 Big West conference championship, the 1998 Big West Western
Division championship, the school's first NCAA tournament appearance in almost 20 years
(1997), the school's first ever NIT Tournament appearance (1998), and the second longest
home court winning streak in the country behind Kansas at 32 in a row (1998). Pacific also
boasted a 90% graduation rate over that same time period.
After the 1998-1999 season Marcopulos left Pacific for a similar position at the University of
Portland. Marcopulos joined Head Coach Rob Chavez’s staff in August of 1999. The Pilots (a
member of the WCC (West Coast Conference)) went 12-16 on the year. After nine months in
Portland, Marcopulos was hired as the new Head Coach at Cabrillo College in April of 2000.
PLAYING CAREER
Marcopulos is a native of the Bay Area and attended Amador Valley High School in
Pleasanton. As a point guard, he led the Dons to four league championships and a four-year
record of 89-10. Upon graduating high school in 1982, Marcopulos went on to Columbia
Junior College in Columbia, California (82-84) where he played for Bob Thomason and
recorded seasons of 17-14 and 27-7. He then accepted a basketball scholarship to attend
Carroll College in Helena, Montana (84-85) before following Coach Thomason to California
State University, Stanislaus (Turlock, CA) (85-87) where he helped lead the team to a
conference title and a Division III NCAA tournament berth in 1987.
EDUCATION
Marcopulos received his undergraduate degree in Physical Education from Stanislaus State
University. He later earned a Masters of Arts degree in Teaching (Physical Education) and a
secondary school teaching credential (For Physical Education) from the University of the
Pacific.
A member of the SIT National Association of Basketball Coaches, Tony lives in Aptos and
has two daughters Emma (6) and Sophia (4).

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE
Rob Hoyt enters his fourth year as an Assistant Coach with the Seahawks. Prior to his arrival to Cabrillo
College, Hoyt spent two seasons as the Assistant Coach for the Reedley College Men’s Basketball Team. His
duties included recruiting, game planning, scouting, and day-to-day operations.
Hoyt recently earned his Masters in Coaching from The United States Sports Academy. He is currently
single and living in Capitola. “I’m extremely thrilled to be at Cabrillo and working with Coach Marcopulos
who I believe to be one of the top coaches in the state.”

THE CABRILLO BASKETBALL EXPERIENCE
Cabrillo head basketball coach Tony Marcopulos was hired to lead the Seahawk program on April
3, 2000. In the twelve years, he has made significant progress in building a foundation for both
present and future success. Prior to beginning his 13th season, he discussed his thoughts
regarding Cabrillo College, his team, his program and just what can be expected:
WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE SOME OF THE STRENGTHS OF THIS COLLEGE?
MARCOPULOS: The location of the campus and it’s close proximity to the beach obviously stand
out as tremendous assets to this college. Cabrillo, as an institution of higher education, is one of the
truly outstanding community colleges in the state of California. We have instructors here that are
committed to the growth and development of students. Lastly, Cabrillo is the kind of place where a
student-athlete can get an outstanding two-year education at an affordable cost, play intercollegiate
athletics and enjoy college social life in one of the most beautiful areas of the country.
WHAT WILL YOU PROMISE A STUDENT-ATHLETE IF HE COMES TO CABRILLO?
MARCOPULOS: What first comes to mind is what I will NOT promise. I will not ever promise a
recruit playing time....ever. They are promised zero minutes. They will earn whatever amount of
playing time they get.
However, there are some things that I’m willing to make promises about. First, I promise that they
will go to class each and everyday. Although I can’t guarantee that each player will graduate, I will
say that only one player who completed all four semesters with us failed to graduate. In my
eighteen years of collegiate coaching I have only coached four student-athletes who did not
graduate who finished their eligibility. I promise they will attend and be in an atmosphere that will be
conducive to attaining a degree.
Second, I promise they will be a much better player when they leave Cabrillo than when they came.
They will work harder on their game and be in better shape than they have ever been in their life.
They will be coached everyday.
Lastly, I promise they will be better people when they leave us than when they came. Not because
they are hanging around me everyday, although I do intend to have a very positive impact on their
life, but because I will surround them with teammates that are good people. It stands to reason that
if you are surrounded with good people, people of character, then that will impact you in a positive
way. Clearly, the opposite is true as well. Our teams are recruited based in large part on an
individual’s character.
Go to class, get better, be a better person. Other than that, I don’t make promises.
WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST STRENGTHS OF THE BASKETBALL PROGRAM?
MARCOPULOS: Our commitment to the development of our players is easily our biggest strength.
Student-athletes in this program will be challenged to excel in the classroom as well as on the
basketball court. We make every effort to ensure that our players receive the best college
basketball experience possible.
WHERE DOES CABRILLO RATE AMONG COAST CONFERENCE CONTENDERS?
MARCOPULOS: Our conference has traditionally been extremely competitive. The Coast
Conference South is perennially advancing several teams deep into the post conference
tournament championship. We will contend for the conference championship. Winning it and
advancing to the State Championship is our only goal.

Season Recaps: The Marcopulos Era
2011-2012 SEASON
The Cabrillo Seahawks Men’s Basketball team finished undoubtly the best season to date in the fifty-three year
history of the college. This year's conference Championship was the fourth time in the last six years that men's
basketball has won the Coast Conference South. Not only did they finish with a perfect record of 12-0 in
conference play, but they outclassed the conference recording many lop-sided wins with the closest margin
being
10 points and greatest being 39 points. After they completed conference, they forged their way forward

with wins over Foothill College and San Francisco City College both in overtime, to achieve Elite Eight status.
The Seahawks lost in the Regional Finals to the eventual 2012 State Champion Fresno City College by only six
points.
The 2011-12 Seahawks also scored big in the honors category as well.
Sophomore point guard Tyler Velasquez (5'10", 180) was voted Coast Conference South Division Most
Valuable Player. Velasquez averaged 14 pts./gm and 6.3 assists/gm. Velasquez finished with an impressive 23
-1 record as the starting point guard for the Seahawks. He was also named to the CCCAA All-State Team.
Aaron Short (6'3", 210) was named to the 1st team All-Coast Conference South list. The sophomore averaged
15.8 pts./gm and 7.4 rebs/gm. Like Vasquez, Short helped guide the Seahawks to 2 Conference
Championships as a starter.
Frank Rogers (6'9", 215) was voted 2nd team honors as he averaged 10pts/gm and 5.6 rebs/gm.
Thomas Pierce (6'5", 205) was an Honorable Mention selection. He posted impressive numbers as the
2010-2011 SEASON
The Cabrillo Seahawks Men’s Basketball team finished the season with an overall record of 20-8, and where
the Champions of the Coast Conference South Division with a 11-1 conference record. In the past five
seasons, the Seahawks have won 2 Championships, a Co-Championship, and taken second place twice. The
Seahawks traveled to Chabot College (Hayward) for a first round Northern California playoff game and lost
the game by a score of 63-81.
Sophomore guard Marcus Duran from Murray High School in Salt Lake City, UT, was voted MVP of the Coast
Conference South. Duran becomes only the second player in Cabrillo College history to be voted as MVP.
Aaron Patterson won the award in 2007. Duran, 6'-175, averaged 19.8 points/gm. Shot 35% from the 3 pt.
line and 85% from the free throw line. He led the state the last two years in three point FG made for the
season.
Sophomore center Bert Hall (6'5"-215) was selected to the 2nd team All-Coast Conference South. Hall
averaged 10 points and nearly 8 rebounds/gm for the Seahawks. More impressively, Hall was one of the keys
for the Seahawks defensively as Hall took 32 charges in 27 games.
Also honored, freshman point guard Tyler Velasquez and freshman forward Aaron Short were both named
Honorable Mention in the Coast Conference South
2009-2010 SEASON
The Cabrillo College Men’s Basketball team finished the season with an overall record of 14-13 and a 2nd place
finish in the Coast Conference South Division with a 8-4 record. The Seahawks have either won the Conference
or come in second in each of the past four seasons. The Seahawks traveled to Consumnes River College
(Sacramento) for a first round playoff game and where beaten 95-83 to end their season.
Tony Gallo, (5’11”, G) Lynn Tech High School in Lynn, MA A transfer from Univ. Mass - Lowell, concluded an
outstanding career at Cabrillo. Two first team All-Coast Conference South selections and an All-State Honorable
mention selection. Scored over 1,000 points, led the Seahawks to two (2) 2nd place finishes. Graduated with an
AA degree from Cabrillo College and signed a National Letter of Intent to play at Coppin State University (Div. 1)
in Baltimore, MD.
Freshmen guard, Markus Duran (6’1”, G) Murray High School in Salt Lake City, UT, was selected 2nd team AllCoast Conference South and led the state of California in three point field goals made.
2008-2009 SEASON
The Seahawks finished the Coast Conference South in second place with a record of 8-4 and an overall record
of 17-14 for the season. The Seahawks have won the Coast Conference South Championship two of the past
three years and are looking to get back on track after falling short in 08-09. Three players where honored by
their selection to all-conference teams. Tony Gallo was named all-conference first team, while Steve Williams
was selected for all-conference second team. Pete Bernard was selected as Honorable Mention.

Season Recaps Continued: The Marcopulos Era
2007-2008 SEASON
For the first time in the history of Cabrillo College, the Men's Basketball team won the Coast Conference
South Championship. The Seahawks finished the season with a record of 22-9 overall, and a Coast
Conference South record of 11-1. At season's end, the Seahawks where ranked #7 in Northern California
and #14 in the State. Four players where honored by their selection to all-conference teams, and one was
selected to all-state team. Chris Sharp and Aaron Pearson where selected to All-Coast Conference South
First Team, and Denver Mack was selected as All-Coast Conference Second Team. Jared Wood was
selected as Honorable Mention. In addition, Aaron Pearson was selected All-State First Team.
2006-2007 SEASON
For the first time in school history the Cabrillo College Men’s Basketball team won the Coast Conference
Championship. The Seahawks finished the season with a 19-9 overall record and a 9-3 conference record. The
9-3 conference record earned the Seahawks a tie with Hartnell for a share of the Conference Championship.
Aaron Patterson was named the Conference MVP and First Team All-State. Chris Sharp was named to the
Second Team All-Conference with Aaron Pearson and Dom Dunham both earning Honorable Mention AllConference honors. The Seahawks were seeded 9th in Northern California and traveled to West Hills College in
Coalinga, CA for the first round playoff game. The Seahawks lost by two at the buzzer to end their history
making season.
2005-2006 SEASON
With an overall record of 14-14, Cabrillo finished the season with a record of .500 or better for the third-straight
year. Despite late season injuries, the Seahawks finished the season strong, winning 9 of their last 14
games. With a record of 7-5 in the very competitive Coast Conference South, Cabrillo earned a 3rd-place finish
behind only top-ranked West Valley College and #7 San Jose City College. A season-ending ankle injury to
point guard Jeff Scott was a critical blow in the middle of conference play. The Seahawks, who were tied for first
place at the time of his injury, were not able to maintain that same high level of play. Mike Scott, Jon
Fontenberry, and Aaron Patterson each earned All-Conference recognition. Once again the Seahawks were
one of the best defensive teams in the state, ranking 7th out of over 90 teams by allowing only 64.1 ppg.
2004-2005 SEASON
One of the Cabrillo basketball program's best seasons in a long time ended with the Seahawks having earned
17 victories, the most wins under Head Coach Tony Marcopulos. Cabrillo's winning percentage has improved in
each of the 5 seasons with Coach Marcopulos at the helm. For the 2nd time in 3 years the Cabrillo College
Seahawks played their way into the Nor Cal Regional finals before losing to top-ranked and eventual undefeated
state champion Fresno City College. The Seahawks finished the regular season ranked #10 in Northern
California and 20th in the state. Cabrillo finished 3rd in the extremely competitive Coast Conference South.
2003-2004 SEASON
For the first time in over a decade, the Seahawks finished the season with a winning record, 14 wins against
13 losses. However, budget cuts reduced the state tournament field from 64 participants statewide to only
32. The Seahawks would have been the 17th seed in Northern California and were therefore not included in
the field. This was the first time in Marcopulos' tenure that his team did not made the play-offs.
2002-2003 SEASON
The 2002-2003 season was a breakthrough season for the Seahawks. For the first time in California State
tournament history, the 28th seed advanced to the Regional Final as the Seahawks scored upset wins over
5th-seed Feather River College and 12th-seed Skyline College. The Seahawks finished with an overall record
of 15-18, the most Cabrillo wins since 1985. Their 62-55 win over San Jose City College was the first victory
over that school since 1970. All four sophomores continued their education and basketball careers at fouryear institutions. On the academic side, the team’s year-end GPA was 3.1.
2001-2002 SEASON
For the first time in school history the Seahawks made the playoffs in back-to-back seasons. The 17 wins in
the last two seasons are more wins than the previous 5 seasons combined. Myree Bowden, who was
selected First team All-Conference, was the first Cabrillo player to earn such honors in over 15
years. Bowden also signed with the University of the Pacific, the first Cabrillo College player to sign a
Division 1 scholarship in over 25 years.
2000-2001 SEASON
In his first campaign as head coach of the Seahawks, Coach Marcopulos was able to lead Cabrillo into the
playoffs for the first time since 1995. Cabrillo’s eight wins equaled the total number of wins during the
previous three seasons!
