R
obbie DeMarco, 45, thinks of the
Cabrillo College Academy for College Excellence, a program formerly
known as Digital Bridge Academy, as being
a kind of educational defibrillator.
“I was totally dead in school,” he says, recalling how he struggled for many years with
an addiction, homelessness, and a series
of odd jobs before
landing in the ACE
office and hearing a
program graduate talk
about how he could
succeed in college.
“ACE kind of revived
me in a way. It revived my heart.”
DeMarco’s personal story of transformation and confidence in his ability to achieve
his dreams is indicative of the unique journey
provided by the groundbreaking ACE curriculum aimed at under-prepared students who
are not typically encouraged to aim for college.
The program has been receiving growing
acclaim, and this year the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation and the William & Flora Hewlett
Foundation pledged more than $3.6 million
to support its replication at three additional
California community colleges and one outof-state community college. The grants will
allow ACE curriculum to reach 1,440 students
and further plans to create the program at
colleges nationwide. Funding also supports
a five-year longitudinal study measuring the
program’s continued impact.

Executive Message
“These students keep you motivated when they talk about the difference you’ve made in their lives; they’re struggling very hard to get a college degree so they can be there for their families as well.” — David Heald, Foundation Board President
I
David Heald, Cabrillo College Foundation Board President,
Melinda Silverstein, Executive Director, and Brian King,
Cabrillo College President
t has been a banner year of giving. Particularly now, at a time of
widespread cutbacks in education, it has been extraordinary to see
how people in the community have
stepped up to support Cabrillo students in need.
“Some of these students come from
some of the most unfortunate circumstances and yet they have esteem and
energy to move ahead,” said David
Heald, Cabrillo College Foundation
Board President. “They know that with
education, this is the bridge that’s going to get them out from their present
situation and they’re so appreciative
and grateful that somebody actually
took an interest in them.”
In this year’s Annual Report, we
have the pleasure to introduce some of
our inspiring students, including Robbie DeMarco, an ACE student preparing
to transfer to a four year university,
Patricia Garcia who hopes to care for
young children, and Zhilian Liu, who
emigrated from China and wants to
study medicine.
“During some of the worst of times,
we come together to see what we
can do to overcome challenges in our
community,” Heald said. “We can be
there to make a difference. People have
been the most generous and the most
giving. Thank you for your continued
support in these times when individuals need it the most.”
(ACE, continued from cover)
“ACE provides a place for students to
become the people they never knew they
could be,” said Diego Navarro, ACE founding director. Navarro envisions developing a national model for the recruitment,
preparation, retention, and acceleration of
unprepared community college students.
Rather than focusing on traditional remedial coursework, ACE student cohorts are
shepherded through a series of intensive
courses developed from graduate and corporate management programs that help
them find their best learning methods,
understand team development, accelerate study skills, and apply them in regular
college-level courses. Since its founding in
2002, the ACE program has transitioned
more than 675 at-risk students into Cabrillo College’s regular college courses.
Students have also participated in ACE

cohorts at Hartnell, Las Positas, and Berkeley City colleges.
“One day I thought, maybe I could
make it,” DeMarco said. “The ACE foundation course helped me look at myself in
a totally different way. Sometimes you
have to go through something to know
there is going to be something different.”
DeMarco plans to finish his general education and earn a two-year degree in Human
Services at Cabrillo, then transfer to CSU
Monterey Bay to earn a bachelor’s degree.
He placed first in this year’s Martin Luther
King, Jr. Essay Contest.

“The gifts will have a lasting and farreaching impact.”
The 2009-2010 fiscal year generated
$5,468,031 from 4,711 donors. It is the
highest amount raised last year by any of
the 112 community colleges in California.
For Juan Salcedo, who labored last
year over the arduous task of mastering differential
equations, and
for Daniel Ennamorato, who
baked sweet
cinnamon buns
and learned the
craft of blowing
melted sugar
into decorative
forms, generous
scholarships have helped ease the financial burden of full-time college.
Salcedo, 21, who emigrated from Cali,
Columbia five years ago to study and live
with his father in Watsonville, received
the DeAnne & Richard Hart Engineering Endowed Scholarship. In the fall, he
transferred to San Jose State University to
study industrial engineering and business
management.
Ennamorato, 23, a Cabrillo College Culinary Arts program student, is the recipient
of the first Jules
& Jeanne Thiebaut Memorial
Endowed Scholarship, created
by Julie Thiebaut in honor
of her parents.
The scholarship
is one of several
generous gifts generated as part of the
50th Anniversary Scholarship campaign, an
extraordinary effort, raising $1,452,406 in
endowed scholarship funds.
Together with new matching funds
from Title V, a $2.5 million, five-year funding initiative from the Department of

populations, the new scholarship endowments will have a long-lasting effect on
students at Cabrillo College.
“The 50th Anniversary Scholarships
Campaign was such a success,” said Rachael
Spencer, who
co-chaired
the fundraising committee with Bruce
McPherson.
“It’s so wonderful that the
community
understands
the need for these kinds of scholarships.”
The response has been phenomenal,
McPherson agreed. “We know that these
are challenging economic times. Still,
the people of our area responded to give
more young people a chance to continue
with their educational endeavors. Over the
years, the staff and classified employees
of Cabrillo College have made it what it is
and they should feel very good about that.”
Over $300,000 is still available in Title V
Endowed matching funds at the Cabrillo
College Foundation. Interested donors
may establish an endowed scholarship in
their name, or in memory or in honor of a
loved one, with the minimum gift amount
of $7,500 for a new scholarship endowment or $5,000 for an existing scholarship
endowment. Title V matching funds are
available on a first-come-first-served basis
until September 1, 2014 or until all of the
funds have been accessed. Gifts may be
pledged over a period of two to four years.

invest in a new acoustic guitar.
Patricia, 33, the mother of four, dreams of being a bilingual
teacher and working with young children. The recipient of
Corinne Schneider Memorial Scholarship, she has learned English and begun her early childhood education classes.
“Without a doubt, these generous donors and the Foundation have helped me succeed, pushed me further in my education and made it possible to pursue my goal of being a
medical doctor.”

Zhilian, 23, is the first in his family to attend college. Before
transferring to UC Berkeley this fall, he worked on his general education and focused on chemistry in preparation for
a job in the medical field. The Carolyn & Ira Guthrie Chemistry Endowed Scholarship and the Bud & Catherine Lenox
Memorial Endowed Scholarship helped him buy textbooks
and a new computer.
Emily, 22, who served as both president of the Alpha Gamma
Sigma honors organization as well as the editor in chief of The
Voice, the Cabrillo newspaper, transferred to UC Santa Barbara
this fall. She is the recipient of the Carl & Jacqueline Conelly

WES Emergency Grants Help Carry
Students Through Challenges
Joan and Gerald Griffiths Provide Matching Funds

s Kim Ellis contemplates a career
in urban planning, she remembers how hard it was at times
to make ends meet when she was just
starting out on a new career path at Cabrillo College as a single mother of two
children. A $150 emergency grant from
Women’s Educational Success helped carry
her through a difficult financial patch so
she could stay in school full-time and not
postpone plans to transfer to a university.
“It was kind of like the glue that put
things together,” says Ellis, 41, who transferred last year to UC Santa Cruz. The WES
grant gave her an emotional boost as well
as a financial one. “It makes you feel like
you’re living in a better world. It will be
paid forward.”
Peggy Downes Baskin and Rachael
Spencer launched WES in 1997 with 100
members, each contributing $100 to establish an endowment. The fund provides
emergency cash grants of $100-$500 to
help cover unexpected expenses such as
text books, a class uniform, or a bus pass.
Since its inception, 840 grants totaling
$153,018 have been disbursed.
This year, Joan and Gerald Griffiths
are providing matching funds for donations to the WES program of $250 or
more. The couple has also given more
than $16,000 to the WES endowment.
They wanted to make sure students
like Kim have the support they need
to succeed.
“It was hard for me to go back to
school at that age,” says Joan Griffiths,
who landed in the Cabrillo College
Women’s Re-entry Program when she

And Their College Goals
Legacy Donors Honored for Significant Contributions to CAP Success
E
20 ighteen-year-old Lilia Chavez,
who has wanted to be a nurse
for as long as she can remember,
is one of 40 high school graduates this
year who have participated in the Cabrillo
Advancement
Program since
middle school
and who
made plans
to start college in the
fall.
“Every
year, CAP had
a summer program and we learned how to
study for college, how to manage money,
and the things to expect from college,”
Chavez said. “They’re helping us, step by
step, to get to the point where we want
to be.”
Since her introduction to CAP in sixth
grade at Shoreline Middle School, Chavez
has benefitted from CAP mentorship and
tutoring, and now that she’s started at
Cabrillo, she has received a $1,000 scholarship. If she is still at Cabrillo next year, she
will be eligible for another $1,000 scholarship, thanks to a generous donation by
Barbara Samper and her foundation.
Since its inception 19 years ago, more
than 1,300 low-income students have
participated in CAP. This year, there are 294
students in the program from six middle
schools and six high schools in Santa Cruz
County. More than 30 CAP graduates have
enrolled in
Cabrillo College this fall.

She learned about col

requirements at CAP’s
Saturday Academies, and
once she was at Cabrillo, tutored younger
CAP students herself. Her CAP scholarship
paid for a much-needed computer.
“Once you become part of the CAP program, you really become part of another
family,” Linarez said.
CAP remains committed to finding
innovative ways to guide students to college. This summer, seven CAP students
had the opportunity to join 60 new Cabrillo students in the inaugural STARS First
Year Experience program, which provides
an introduction to college courses.
“It has always been a dream for me
to have the CAP students participate in a

summer bridge program that would help
them with the transition from high school
to Cabrillo College,” said Liz Dominguez,
CAP Coordinator/Counselor. “It’s so wonderful that after 19 years, the community’s
commitment to CAP is still so strong.”
This year at the annual CAP awards ceremony, a special tribute was paid to legacy
donors who have made significant gifts to
the program. Those honored included Jack
Baskin and Peggy Downes Baskin, Harold
and Dorothy Hyde, Paul and Pat Shirley,
Sheila Burke and Bill Locke-Paddon of the
Borina Foundation, and Barbara Samper
and her foundation.

Faculty Grant Funds New
Software for Learning Skills Lab
C
abrillo College students with
learning disabilities or visual
impairments can use cutting
edge computer software to translate
text to speech in their homes, thanks to a
generous Faculty Grant that provides support for needed items outside traditional
budgets.
The $1,251 Faculty Grant for Student
Success paid for a Kurzweil software
upgrade, which allows students to gain
access to the technology remotely.
For Cabrillo student Ellen McCabe, the
new software means she will be able to
read her texts from her home in Bonny
Doon, rather than have to fit all her technology-assisted studying into school hours
when she can get to the learning skills lab.
“It will keep me on track with my
classes,” said McCabe, who plans to graduate in the spring with an associate’s degree
in Early Childhood Education and eventually create her own school for children with
learning disabilities.
“It means students don’t have to stop
working when the lab closes,” said Vicki
Stanley, a learning disabilities specialist
with the Learning Skills Program. “It expands the usage. That was one of the main
reasons we wanted to upgrade. We hope
Vicki Stanley and Ellen McCabe
it’s going to be magical and really helpful
to our students.”
There are more than 1,200 students in
Disabled Students Programs and Services;
about 300 students use the learning skills
lab each semester.
There is over $40,000 available to
faculty each year through three facultyspecific programs at the Foundation.

D
ale and Kathie Sinor, who remember college as a great time
of exploration and learning,
hope that naming the Cabrillo College
Foundation as a fixed percentage beneficiary in their trust will help future students
enjoy the same rich experience.
“There are a lot of people who need
what the community college system has
to offer,” says Kathie Sinor, an artist and
businesswoman who has taken occasional
classes at Cabrillo throughout her career.
She has also served as an instructor for
classes taught through community college extension programs.
“We’ve always believed in education,”
Kathie says. “My happiest times were when
22 I was in school, so to give back when
we’re gone so others can continue to
enjoy this resource was very easy. ”
Kathie, who earned a bachelor’s
degree in Design from UC Los Angeles, went on to launch a successful
art-related retail business, then
returned to school and earned a
master’s degree in Human Resources and
Organizational Development from the
University of San Francisco. She worked
in corporate training and development,
eventually branching out to teach leadership, strategic planning, and team building in local school districts.
Dale, a math major at UC Los Angeles,
has had a successful career as a computer
software engineer. In addition to launching his own companies, he is known for
creating XTree, an early file manager
software that still has a legion of avid fans,
and after 25 years even has its own online
XTree fan page.
“Cabrillo is a great local institution,”
Dale says. “I am looking forward to taking
classes.”
Cabrillo College Foundation Heritage Club
T
he Heritage Club honors those who have included a gift to Cabrillo College in their estate plans. Though Cabrillo
does not have to be notified of a bequest, it is useful for planning purposes to know that a gift is anticipated. It is often helpful
to discuss with donors in advance the structuring of a gift to achieve the donor’s goals. Additionally, we like to acknowledge
the generosity of donors who remember Cabrillo in their wills.

Contributing to Cabrillo College
“ The Cabrillo College Foundation has experienced remarkable growth, responsiveness, and stability. In 2009-10, the CCF has raised more funds than any other California community college foundation—a remarkable feat for a mid-sized college. This year nearly $5.4 million was provided in direct support to Cabrillo College and its students. The Cabrillo College Foundation sets the highest standard in accountability with repeated unqualified audits.”

Emeritus Historian Sandy Lydon Honored
24 W
hether sharing his passion for
“weird and wonderful memories”
along Santa Cruz County roadsides,
fearlessly tackling the difficult question: Is
Santa Cruz Really Weird? or bringing to life
the rich histories of immigrants in the Monterey Bay region and the secret treasures of
local parks, Sandy Lydon has played a vital
role as Cabrillo College historian emeritus.
“Our faculty has always been the heart of
our success and Sandy epitomizes the passion and dedication that has made Cabrillo
exceptional for more than 50 years,” says Brian
King, Cabrillo College President.
Fortunately for the Cabrillo College
Foundation, Lydon has not strayed too far
since leaving his official post on the faculty in
2000. He has continued to inspire, enlighten,
and sometimes shock us with stories of the
past through his annual historical President’s
Circle tours. “His annual tours for the President’s Circle are the highlight of the year for
many of our members,” King says. “From the
North Coast to San Juan Bautista, Sandy’s
knowledge is amazing and his enthusiasm,
contagious.”
President’s Circle Members on tour of San Juan Bautista
“There is no one quite like Sandy. Every trip he takes with us is truly a historical adventure, as well as an entertaining one! He makes the tours come alive with his facts and anecdotes.”
— Mary Blanchard
President’s Circle member and past President’s Circle Committee Chair
Lydon’s support has contributed
to the success of the President’s Circle,
which enables the Foundation to offer
scholarships to students, provide support for student services, and promote
workforce education.
Lydon has taught history since 1968
and has earned numerous teaching
awards, including the Floyd Younger
Award for Teaching Excellence and
the Best College Teacher in Santa Cruz
County Award. Lydon was honored at
the 2009 President’s Holiday Party for
his efforts on behalf of the President’s
Circle. Lydon continues to research,
write, and lecture throughout the region.
We salute you, History Dude!
