op performing students who have committed themselves to the heavy demands
of new health care career paths received an
unprecedented commendation this year thanks to
the Grove Foundation’s High Achievers Scholarship,
which provided $10,000 scholarships each to 10
Career Technical Education students.
“It’s incredible,” said Genoa Fox, a former emergency medical technician and volunteer fire fighter
who aspires to work as a flight nurse. “It’s a dream
come true. I have worked so hard to put myself
through school. It’s a gift now to be able to focus on
my program, to not have to worry about working.
The ability to sleep is amazing. That doesn’t happen
if you’re getting off work at midnight and writing a
paper.”
Recipients in the nursing, radiologic technology,
and dental hygiene programs were recommended
by their instructors and will receive their funds over
a period of two years.
“In 20 years, I’ve never seen as large a scholarship,”
said Ann Smelzter, director of the Cabrillo Radiologic
Technology program. “It makes an impact, not only
on students, but on their families.”
It’s also an inspiring vote of confidence, the
recipients said.
“To have somebody who believes in what you’re
doing, that’s been huge,” said Jana Thomsen, a former
environmental educator who is a second year nursing

Over the last 10 years, the Foundation has
raised over $30 million for college initiatives, and Foundation fundraising continues to rank among the top 2 percent of the
112 community colleges in California. It is
a kind of giving that is transforming the
lives of students in need and shaping the
future of our unique community.
Despite ongoing Cabrillo College budget cuts, including a loss of more than 10
percent in state funding in just four years,
our nearly 50-year-old Foundation has
continued to support students through the
sustaining generosity of our community.
“In a period of severe economic uncertainty and continuing state budget cuts,
Cabrillo is especially fortunate to benefit
from strong community support,” says Rachel Wedeen, Foundation board president.
In this year’s Annual Report, we hope
you enjoy the personal victories of our students who have, with your help, managed
to overcome tremendous obstacles. They
include the High Achievers in technical career programs whose studies were buoyed
by the Grove Foundation’s generosity; CAP
graduate Cynthia Carranco, who is begin-

an emancipated foster system teen who
received a $500 American Dream grant
from the Ow family. They each have been
inspired by your support and confidence
in their bright futures.

said. “Significant efforts have been made
to avoid trimming core classes, transfer
courses, job training and basic skills
courses. Enrollment remains especially
strong. Students and staff are heartened
by the levels of support they receive from
Foundation donors.”

to walk this path. It lets us breathe.”
The scholarships are made possible by
the Los Altos-based Grove Foundation, a
philanthropic organization founded 25
years ago by Andy and Eva Grove. The
Grove Career Training Program provides
funding to organizations and community college students on career training
pathways. Since 2006, the Grove Foundation has provided Cabrillo students with
$936,000 in support.
“The scholarships are recognizing that
there are many options for people out
there and these types of career choices
are just as respected and honored as going into a four-year program,” said Jaime
Kemmer, the Grove associate overseeing
the Career Training Program. “This scholarship is really transformational.”

“It has made my life so much easier,”
said Meg King, 44, a second year nursing
student who started her journey into the
program five years ago while working in
the restaurant industry. She worked parttime during the summer handling medical
billing. “I was planning on working during
the school year, but it would’ve been
really difficult.”
Meg King and Jana Thomsen
Jana Thomsen
“I wanted a helping job,” said Jana Thomsen, 39, a second year nursing student who
formerly taught environmental science at
the elementary school level and worked as
a nanny. She spent the summer working as
a patient sitter in a San Jose hospital. The
scholarship allows for a more balanced life.
“It’s been highly encouraging academically
and obviously financially.”
Shannon Ellis
Raquel Nelson
Raquel Nelson, 27, began working as a
dental assistant when she was 19 and continued with a full-time job while taking her
prerequisite courses. She recently began her
second year in the dental hygiene program.
“It takes a lot of determination. I started
with basic math. I just worked really hard
and tried really hard to get good grades and
work at the same time. Working really hard
makes you appreciate things.”
Shannon Ellis
“We’ve been saving this whole time, but
it was going to be a big strain on the family,” said Shannon Ellis, 40, who hopes to
work in a periodontal practice. The dental
hygiene kit for new students costs thousands of dollars. “Getting the scholarship
means I’ve been able to add instruments
to help me and benefit patients,” she said.
“I’ve not had to worry about pressure on
the family.” The funding also helped Ellis
attend professional meetings with the
California Dental Hygienists’ Association
in Southern California. “The scholarship
benefits me in so many ways; it’s hard to
sum it up in just a few words.”

“The scholarship is unbelievable,” said
James Kelley, 32, who spent the summer
as a full-time intern in an active radiology
department at a local hospital. He has
been able to cut his work obligations to
just 10 hours a week thanks to the scholarship. “It’s a huge load off my shoulders. I
don’t have to worry about how I am going
to pay for the upcoming semesters’ books,
school supplies, transportation, rent and
food. It’s a full-time job just doing the
program. I am honored that the Grove
Foundation found me deserving of the
scholarship.”

Jennifer Conway-Shwaiko and James Kelley
Jennifer Conway-Shwaiko
Jennifer Conway-Shwaiko, 41, was on
the waitlist for the radiologic technology
program for four years and almost had to
drop out due to financial concerns. A single
mother, she also cares for her mother and
her grandmother. “I wouldn’t have money
to pay for gas if I didn’t have this scholarship,” she said. Conway-Shwaiko spent the
summer on a full-time 10-week rotation
at St. Louise Regional Hospital in Salinas
where she has gotten hands-on training.
“For me, the High Achievers Scholarship means so much. It just takes that pressure off. It’s enough to get you by and, once we get jobs, we’ll be able to pay
our way by supporting others and giving back.”
ara Hemingway is a single mother and widow who had to postpone the nursing program last
year while she underwent cancer
treatments. “Life has been really challenging,” she said.
This year, however, with the help of
generous Women’s Educational Success
donors, she has been able to make it over
the hurdles of the full-time demands
of her second year in nursing. The WES
program, which provides students with
emergency grants to help them stay in
school, makes graduating in the spring a
less arduous journey.
Hemingway, a native of Mexico, grew
up in Capitola where her parents worked
hard to make sure their children received
an education. She waited almost four
years to get into the nursing program.
“I feel so blessed and grateful,” she said.
“Ever since I graduated from high school,
I’ve dreamed of Cabrillo. At 38, I’m finally
going to finish.” She hopes to work with
oncology patients.
The WES program was launched in
1997 by Peggy Downes Baskin and Rachael Spencer with 100 members, each
contributing $100. It provides emergency
cash grants of up to $750 to help cover
unexpected expenses such as text books,
a class uniform, or bus pass. Since its
inception, 974 grants totaling $193,642
have been disbursed. Last year, 126
women received grants totaling $30,000.
This year, $32,000 will be awarded.
The endowment received a significant Maria and Kelly Nesheim

WES co-chairs Linda Downing and
attorney Emily Maloney, who left WES

Access to MESA Lectures
T
he more you see math, the easier
it is to do math, says civil engineering student Adriane Garcia,
who is benefitting from a new initiative
in the Mathematics, Engineering, and
Science Achievement (MESA) program
to provide easy online access to past lectures and accompanying notes with the
purchase of a few smart pens.
Smart pens digitally record printed
notes while at the same time recording
a synchronized audio file of the lecture
or discussion in the classroom. After the
notes and lecture are uploaded to the
MESA website, students can click on any
part of the written notes and hear the
lecture that was happening at the time.
“We are bombarded with a lot of
information in a short period of time, so
students find it very helpful to revisit the
lectures and see the actual notes,” said
Garcia, 32. Garcia, who has a learning disability, said the pencasts also fill a recent
gap in assistance that was created by the
loss of paid student note-takers due to
budget cuts.
MESA director, Sue Tappero, paid
for four smart pens through the Faculty Grants for Student Success program,
which provides instructors with grants of
$600-$5,000 for the purchase of classroom
equipment, to support course work, and
pay for costs for presenting at conferences. Each semester, she loans the pens
to students in exchange for their notetaking commitment in key classes. Once
the information is uploaded to the MESA
site, students can replay a session as many
times as needed.
“They can be sure to have a much
more robust understanding of the class,”
Tappero said.
This year, the Faculty Grants for Student Success endowment will provide
$20,205 in faculty grants. There is over
$54,000 available to faculty and staff each
year through three faculty and staff specific
endowment programs at the Foundation.

Contributing to Cabrillo College
“The Cabrillo College Foundation has made its mark in our community as a reliable, well-run, and highly accountable organization—evident in the 4,000 to 5,000 donors who donate to it every year. The CCF has raised on average $2.9 million a year for the past decade, raising even more in the some of the most turbulent economic times. This year was no exception, with nearly $3.4 million in donations received that provide direct support to Cabrillo College and its students.”

This year the Ow family, generous longtime supporters of the Cabrillo College mission, provided 80 students (the most ever

George Ow, Jr. and his family have awarded
more than $313,000 to 713 graduating high
school students coming to Cabrillo College.
Ow Family with American Dream Scholarship Recipients
“Our family believes in these young students. There is an old Chinese adage: plan for one year, plant grain; plan for ten years, plant trees; plan for 100 years, educate the people.
Our investment in these students is bettering our community — George Ow, Jr.
and our future.” The American Dream Scholarship program has focused on local ethnic minority
and disadvantaged high school seniors.
Ruby Robledo, 18, studied in the video academy
at Watsonville High School and aspires to be an actor

“George Ow, Jr.’s philanthropy and work in diversity

and student equity in the California Community Colleges,” said Brian King, Cabrillo
