Among the year’s many highlights were unexpected commendations from the outside evaluators who assessed the College for its sixyear accreditation review. The foundation received a commendation from the Acrediting team for its leadership, performance, and contribution to the long-term financial sustainability of the community and the mission of the college, describing us as “critical partners in working passionately on behalf of the College.” What we can be most proud of is the broad and growing base of donors, both new and sustaining, who continue to support the higher education of students in our community. In the last fiscal year, we raised $2,635,640; 4,419 people gave to the Foundation; and our endowment grew to $23 million. These numbers translate to the realization of our students’ educational goals and the strengthening of our community as a whole. 3 the Tutorials Center and the growth of the Women’s Educational Success emergency support program. We also celebrated the 25th anniversary of the American Dream Scholarship program, a much-needed makeover of the “We have been able to improve the lives of local citizens who would not otherwise be able to take the courses they need to upgrade their educational background. Higher education is more valuable than ever in today’s economy.” — Michael W. Machado, CPA, Cabrillo College Foundation President In this year’s Annual Report we share a significant planned gift announced by Patti and Brian Herman, the stunning success of the Foster Youth Independence Program, the ongoing achievements of the Cabrillo Advancement Program and “I love hearing from people who want to support Cabrillo and our students. Two years later, she was invited to join CAP, a program that provides mentorship and academic activities each year to underserved student populations. a deeply personal vision to prepare the next generation of students. “If it wasn’t for CAP and the Honors Program at Cabrillo, UCLA would seem so unattainable.” Samper, Cabrillo’s largest individual donor, has donated more than $2 million since 2007. This year, “her” students, whom she supported since sixth grade, graduated from high school. Liz Dominguez, CAP counselor/coordinator, who has served as the academic coach and personal cheerleader for hundreds of students over the years, says gifts from Samper, the Borina Foundation and other private donors translate to the success of students like Martinez, who often work to support their families while being full-time students. “I think being deeply rooted in family values and Evelyn’s desire to help to financially support her family is what fueled her drive to do well academically,” Dominguez says. “I have no doubt that she is going to do terrific at UCLA and beyond.” — Evelyn Martinez “CAP opens your eyes to a whole different world,” says Martinez who, as a CAP graduate, received $2,000 in scholarships to attend Cabrillo for two years. She also received a CAP Transfer Scholarship at the CAP awards ceremony in March. Since CAP began in 1991 at E.A. Hall Middle School with 22 sixth graders, it “Education increases hope, self-confidence, optimism and job opportunities.” — Barbara Samper Evelyn Martinez has expanded to include about 360 participants from 12 schools in Santa Cruz County. High school graduation and college matriculation rates of CAP students are 16–32 percent higher than those of a comparable benchmark group derived from the California Department of Education, according to self-reported CAP data. “Education gives these CAP students a passport for the future,” says Barbara Samper, a long time donor to CAP who holds CAP Graduate Celebrates Daughter’s Dream of Being a Doctor College Support Has Helped Shape a Family S horeline Middle School student Lizbeth Diaz, 12, who dreams of being a pediatrician, is an enthusiastic participant in the Cabrillo Advancement Program. It runs in the family, just like her mother, Angelica Diaz and her two aunts who all graduated from high school and attended Cabrillo College after being in CAP. “CAP opened the doors to opportunities we would not have ever had,” says Angelica, who works for the Live Oak Elementary School District. Her sisters, Mireya Flores and Monica Velasco, are a nurse and a juvenile institutions officer. For Lizbeth, CAP highlights so far have been the medical and culinary classes at the Summer Institute and a Saturday workshop about finance and budgeting. After hearing about opportunities in the medical field, “I was even more into it,” Lizbeth said. Her mother knows it won’t be easy but knows school will pay off. “I tell her, if you have the passion to be a pediatrician, you can make it work.” Steele Honors Parents With “Seeds of Tomorrow” Annuity “It is all about finding who needs help and making the help available, reaching out to people who might not be able to blossom on their own.” Cat Steele with a CAP Student C atherine “Cat” Steele remembers going to a summer camp as a child in the Santa Cruz mountains where the children were recognized as the seeds of tomorrow. They were much like the youngest sixth grade recruits of the Cabrillo Advancement Program (CAP)—full of promise. — Cat Steele which provides emergency stipends for students in need. The fund is a way to honor her parents. Her father, Alex Saxton, was a carpenter who later became a teacher and writer; her mother, Trudy, was a social worker. The annuity honors both their choices, Steele says. As a coordinator for outreach services for the public library system, Steele had the opportunity to watch students in the CAP program make their way to college. “CAP starts off in a young person’s life She saw the pride of parents. and encourages students to stay in school “For so many of them, this was the to further their education,” says Steele, first time someone in their family was who has established the Seeds of Tomor- going to go on to college,” Steele says. “It row charitable gift annuity with a gift of is all about finding who needs help and $100,000 to support CAP, a mentorship making the help available, reaching out to and scholarship program for at risk youth, people who might not be able to blossom and Women’s Educational Success (WES), on their own.” (Continued from page 1 ) The couple has a strong connection to Cabrillo. Brian taught communication courses at the College and served as an interim tennis coach in the 1970’s. “We’ve really seen the programs working here and see the people involved,” he said. Patti Herman, who has enjoyed Cabrillo literature courses and numerous theater events over the years, said “It is a small thing we can do. Cabrillo has been a part of us.” The Hermans say the warmth and enthusiasm of student tutors and Lori Chavez, Cabrillo College Tutorials coordinator, inspired them. “The support will result in enhanced academic success,” Chavez said. “We greatly appreciate this kind of support from our community.” American Sign Language student Christine Holeman, who practices regularly with native signer and student Garrett Nichols, says tutoring has “made the difference between passing and be- ing successful.” Peer tutors help students gain confidence and grow to meet their educational goals. “It’s very enriching to be able to give back,” said Brian Herman. 5 2014-15 President’s Circle Benefits President’s Circle Donors Raise Record Gifts Members Enjoyed A Special Year of Events P resident’s Circle members who provide unrestricted funds for the Foundation raised $282,000 last year, once more topping the generous gifts of the previous year. He gives annually to the College and has made a plan for giving in his will. “I was very happy to be there. I want to contribute to the students who are so special.” Kathy Cowan Shephard Cabrillo English faculty Kathy Cowan Shephard has taught in the English Department at Cabrillo College for almost 25 years. Kathy’s husband Paul, who passed away in 2012, took night classes at Cabrillo in the late 1980’s while working full-time to get his degree. When he graduated, Kathy established the Paul Shephard Business Endowed Scholarship in his honor and has included support for this scholarship in her estate plans. “In the wake of Paul’s death, I believe that the best way to honor him is to extend the exuberance of his life by helping students. He loved Cabrillo as I love Cabrillo and I know that he would support this gift.” Karl and Joan Mertz Retired businessman and artist Karl and Joan Mertz have both taken classes at Cabrillo and studied jewelry design. They have named Cabrillo in their giving plans. “My family’s been here in Aptos since 1883 and I just have nothing but praise for the way Cabrillo has grown.” — Karl Mertz 17 WES Provides a Boost That Goes a Long Way Tiffany Hammer and Rachel Wedeen Jennifer Wheeler 18 A $700 emergency grant through Women’s Educational Success helped re-entry student Jennifer Wheeler pay rent at a time when financing for school had fallen through and wouldn’t pick up again until the next semester. “I was wandering around the campus looking for some support. I had no money and my biggest concern was rent. You can’t even think about anything else.” started this program knowing that a little support goes a long way,” states Baskin. The WES endowment has now grown to $1.3 million. “Every year when I think of the women who are speaking at the WES luncheon in September and what they must feel, I know there is nothing more powerful than being in a room with a very large group of women who are there to support them,” said Michele Bassi, who co-chairs the WES Committee with Pegi Ard. “We have never met them, but we care about them. We all want them to be successful.” A record $52,000 will be allocated this year in small grants to help students get over a sudden financial hurdle.
