FACULTY OF DENTAL SURGERY
 Master of Dental Surgery
(A) Advanced Level passes at Grade C or better in: Biology and Chemistry; and
(B) An Intermediate Level pass at Grade C or better in: Physics.
Provided that all grades indicated are obtained together in one session of examinations
(i.e. one sitting) and are from recognised examining boards from the same country.

All MDS applicants are required to undergo an occupational health assessment.
 Bachelor of Science (Honours)
(applicants are required to choose either Dental Technology or Dental Hygiene.)

If Dental Technology is chosen as the area of specialisation, applicants shall have:
either (A) an Intermediate Level pass at Grade C or better in Chemistry
or
(B) an Advanced level pass in Chemistry.
Applicants who are in possession of the Diploma in Health Science in the area of Dental Technology
awarded by the University of Malta, may be admitted to the second year of the Bachelor of Science
(Honours) in the same area.

If Dental Hygiene is chosen as the area of specialisation, applicants shall have:
either (A) an Intermediate Level pass at Grade C or better in Biology
or
(B) an Advanced level pass in Biology.
All B.Sc.(Hons) applicants are required to undergo an occupational health assessment.
 Diploma in Dental Surgery Assistance (including preparatory course)
either Six Secondary Education Certificate Examinations which must include: English
or
Language, Maltese, Mathematics, and any other subject at Grade 5 or better;
and Biology and Chemistry at Grade 4 or better.
the MCAST Diploma for Dental Surgery Assistants
Applicants wishing to join the preparatory course leading to admission to the Diploma in
Dental Surgery Assistance are required to be not less than 18 years of age within three
months from the commencement of the course. Moreover, prior to enrol for the preparatory
course, accepted applicants are required to undergo an occupational health assessment.

 Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Commerce (Honours)
An Intermediate Level pass in: Pure Mathematics.
An Advanced Level pass in Accounting if Accountancy is chosen as a main area of study.
Admission to the Bachelor of Commerce course is also open to applicants in possession of:
either the Certificate in Banking of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (6 subjects) and
an Intermediate Level pass in Pure Mathematics,
or
the Diploma in Banking and Financial Services offered by MCAST and an
Intermediate Level pass in Pure Mathematics provided that such applicants may
only choose ‘Banking and Finance’, and either
‘Insurance’ or ‘Economics’ or
‘Management’ or ‘Marketing’ or ‘Public Policy’ as
their two main areas of study.
 Bachelor of Science (Business and Information Technology)
An Intermediate Level pass in: Pure Mathematics.
FACULTY OF EDUCATION
 Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Early Childhood Education and Care
A pass at Advanced Matriculation Level at Grade C or better in any one of the following subjects:
Art, Biology, Chemistry, Computing, English, French, Geography, German, History, Home
Economics and Human Ecology, Information Technology, Italian, Maltese, Mathematics
(Applied or Pure), Music, Philosophy, Physics, Religious Knowledge, Sociology and Spanish.
Applications for the B.A. (Hons) ECEC shall also be accepted from persons who are not in
possession of the general requirements for admission as specified in the Admission Regulations
but have obtained the following:
(A) EITHER the MCAST-BTEC National Diploma in Early Years
OR the MCAST-BTEC National Diploma in Children's Care Learning and Development
OR the MCAST-BTEC National Diploma in Child’s Play Learning and Development
OR the Certificate in Pre-School Education (Education Division - Further Studies and Adult
Education Department)
OR the Certificate in Childcare (Education Division - Further Studies and Adult Education
Department); AND
(B) a pass at Advanced Matriculation Level at grade C or better in any one of the following
subjects: Art, Biology, Chemistry, Computing, English, French, Geography,
German, History, Home Economics and Human Ecology, Information
Technology, Italian, Maltese, Mathematics (Applied or Pure), Music, Philosophy,
Physics, Religious Knowledge, Sociology and Spanish; AND
(C) a pass at SEC level at Grade 5 or better in Mathematics.
Applications for entry into any year after commencement of the B.A. (Hons) ECEC shall
also be accepted from applicants who are in possession of the following:
(A) MCAST–BTEC Higher National Diploma in Advanced Studies in Early Years OR any other
comparable and equivalent recognised qualification; and
(B) passes at SEC level at Grade 5 or better in English Language, Maltese and Mathematics.

Further requirements for all B.A. (Hons) ECEC
1) All applicants shall have achieved the level of Good Users, as defined in the guidelines issued
by the Faculty, in each paper of the Faculty of Education Written and Spoken
Proficiency Tests in English and in Maltese, or a qualification recognised by the Board
as comparable, obtained not more than three years prior to the commencement of the
Course, provided that for courses commencing in 2017, applicants who obtained a pass at
SEC level at Grade 3, or an Intermediate Matriculation Level pass at Grade C or higher, or an
Advanced Matriculation Level pass at Grade C or higher in English and/or Maltese may be
exempted from obtaining a pass in the respective Written and Spoken Proficiency Test.
Applicants who do not pass the English and Maltese proficiency tests at the required level (as
applicable) by the 30 September, and are not exempted from this requirement as specified
above, shall not be admitted to the Course.
2) All applicants shall submit with their application a Police Good Conduct Certificate issued
by the Commissioner of Police in terms of the Conduct Certificates Ordinance, and shall not
be included in the Register established under the Protection of Minors (Registration) Act.
Notes
The Course shall have a limited number of students that may be allowed to register for the Course
depending on the availability of human resources and the number of suitable classes available for the
practicum component. The number of available places shall be announced when this information is made
available and shall be confirmed at the time of the call for applications.
 If the number of eligible applicants exceeds the number of places available, applicants shall be selected
according to criteria se out by the Faculty. (For Selection Criteria refer to bye-laws on

www.um.edu.mt/registrar/regulations)
 Diploma in Facilitating Inclusive Education
Pass the proficiency tests in English and Maltese, approved by the Faculty of Education,
and be in possession of the European Computer Driving Licence. (Applicants shall be
exempted from sitting for the proficiency test in English if they are in possession of a pass
at SEC level at Grade 3 or higher, or an Intermediate Matriculation Level pass at Grade C or
higher, or an Advanced Matriculation Level pass at Grade C or higher. Applicants shall be
exempted from sitting for the proficiency test in Maltese if they are in possession of a pass
at SEC level at Grade 3 or higher, or an Intermediate Matriculation Level pass at Grade C or
higher, or an Advanced Matriculation Level pass at Grade C or higher). (In the case of
English, passes at Grade B or better at GCE level, is also accepted).
Applicants shall be chosen according to the bye-laws for the Selection of Applicants for admission as approved by
Senate available on www.um.edu.mt/registrar/regulations . Also vide note 9 at the end of the leaflet.

 Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)
(applicants are required to choose either Electrical and Electronic Engineering or Mechanical
Engineering as their area of specialisation.)
Advanced Level passes at Grade C or better in: Pure Mathematics and Physics.
Admission to the above courses is also open to applicants in possession of:
passes at Grade 5 or better in the Secondary Education Certificate Examination in English
Language and Maltese; and of
either the MCAST-BTEC Higher National Diploma in an area deemed to be relevant to the course
by the Board of the Faculty of Engineering, or the MCAST Diploma in Industrial Electronics.
If applicants are graduates of a university or have other qualifications considered to be sufficient, they may
be exempted by the University Admissions Board, on the advice of the Faculty Admissions Committee,
from the whole or part of these special course requirements.
FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES
Bachelor of Science (Honours) in:
 Applied Biomedical Science*/ Environmental Health/ Podiatry
(A) Advanced Level passes at Grade C or better in Biology and Chemistry; and
(B) An Intermediate Level pass in Physics.
B.Sc.(Hons) in Applied Biomedical Science applicants who possess a grade D instead of grade C
in one of the required subjects at Advanced level will be admitted subject to satisfying special
conditions within the course. (Refer to bye-laws on www.um.edu.mt/registrar/regulations)
 Applied Food and Nutritional Sciences
(A) Advanced Level passes at Grade C or better in Biology and Chemistry; and
(B) An Intermediate Level pass in either Physics or Mathematics (Applied or Pure).
B.Sc.(Hons) in Applied Food and Nutritional Sciences applicants who possess a grade D instead
of grade C in one of the required subjects at Advanced level will be admitted subject to satisfying
special conditions within the course. (Refer to bye-laws on www.um.edu.mt/registrar/regulations)
 Communication Therapy*
either (A) An Advanced Level pass at Grade C or better in Biology; and
or
(B) An Intermediate Level pass at Grade C or better in English or Maltese.
(A) An Advanced Level pass at Grade C or better in English or Maltese; and
(B) An Intermediate Level pass at Grade C or better in Biology.
 Mental Health Nursing / Midwifery * / Nursing / Radiography*
An Advanced Level pass in Biology.
Admission to the B.Sc. (Hons) in Nursing courses is also open to applicants in possession of a pass in
the MCAST BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care (Health Studies) and the MCAST Level 5
Award in Life Sciences.
Applicants for the B.Sc (Hons) Radiography are required to be not less than 18 years of age within
three months from the date on which the Course commences.

 Occupational Therapy*
An Advanced Level pass at Grade C or better in Biology.
B.Sc.(Hons) in Occupational Therapy applicants who possess a grade D instead of grade C
in Biology will be admitted subject to satisfying special conditions within the course. (Refer

 Physiotherapy *
(A) An Advanced Level pass at Grade C or better in Biology; and
(B) An Intermediate Level pass in Physics.
 Bachelor of Science (Honours) Health Science (Part time )
A. either the Diploma in Health Science awarded by the University of Malta;
Or
a professional qualification deemed by senate to be equivalent to the Diploma in Health Science
and
B. passes in the following ECDL Core Course Modules:
Module 2: Using the Computer and Managing Files; Module 3: Word Processing;
Module 6: Presentations; Module 7: Information and Communication.
 Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Mental Health Nursing (Part time)
The Diploma in Health Science in either Midwifery or Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing awarded
by the University of Malta or a comparable qualification.
 Higher Diploma in Health Science (including preparatory course)
in Nursing Studies
either Six passes at Grade 5 or better in the Secondary Education Certificate Examination
which must include: English Language, Maltese, Mathematics, and Biology.
the MCAST-BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care (Health
Studies), or the MCAST Advanced Diploma in Health Sciences ,or equivalent.

Applicants wishing to join the preparatory course leading to admission to the Higher
Diploma in Health Science with Nursing Studies, as the area of study may, instead, present
the Certificate in Nursing Practice awarded by the Institute of Health Care, or the Certificate
of Enrolled Nurse awarded by the Department of Health.
 Certificate in Clinical Nursing Practice (The areas of study offered in any particular
year shall be published before the commencement of each Course)
either a Diploma in Nursing awarded by the University of Malta;
or
a professional qualification deemed by Senate to be equivalent to the Diploma in
Nursing
Notes for all Faculty of Health Science applicants:

All applicants are required to undergo a medical fitness test.
For entry to the diploma course, applicants are required to be not less than 18 years of age within
three months following the date on which the Preparatory Course commences.
Courses marked with an * have limited number of places. Applicants shall be chosen according to the bye-laws

 Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Computer Engineering /Computing Science/
Microelectronics and Embedded Systems
Applicants are required to indicate their choice of either Computer Engineering or Computing
Science, or Microelectronics and Embedded Systems as their area of specialisation.
B.Sc.(Hons) applicants who possess a grade D instead of grade C in one of the required subjects at Advanced
level will be admitted subject to satisfying special conditions within the course. (Refer to bye-laws on
www.um.edu.mt/registrar/regulations)
If Computing Science is chosen as the area of specialisation, applicants shall have:
(i) passes at Advanced Matriculation Level at Grade C or better in Pure Mathematics and
in any other subject; and
(ii) a pass at Intermediate Matriculation Level in one of the following subjects (excluding the
subjects presented at Advanced Level): Accounts, Applied Mathematics, Biology,
Chemistry, Computing, Economics, English, Information Technology, Music,
Philosophy and Physics.
If applicants have other qualifications considered to be sufficient, they may be exempted by the
University Admissions Board, on the advice of the Faculty Admissions Committee, from the whole or
part of these special course requirements.
If Computer Engineering or Microelectronics and Embedded Systems is chosen as
the area of specialisation, applicants shall have:
(i) passes at Advanced Matriculation Level at Grade C or better in Pure Mathematics and
in one of the following subjects: Applied Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry,
Computing, and Physics, ; and
(ii) a pass at Intermediate Matriculation Level in one of the following subjects (excluding the subjects
presented at Advanced Level): Applied Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Computing,
Economics, English, Information Technology, Music, Philosophy, and Physics.
Admission to the Bachelor of Science (Honours) course with Computer Engineering or
Microelectronics and Embedded Systems is also open to applicants in possession of:
(i) Five passes in the Secondary Education Certificate Examination, including: English
Language and Maltese; and
(ii) either the MCAST-BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) in an area deemed to be
relevant to the Course by the Board, or the MCAST Diploma in Industrial Electronics.
 Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (Honours)
Applicants are required to indicate their choice of either Artificial Intelligence or
Computing and Business, or Software Development as their area of specialisation.
B.Sc. IT (Hons) applicants who possess a grade D instead of grade C in one of the required subjects at
Advanced level will be admitted subject to satisfying special conditions within the course. (Refer to bye-laws
on www.um.edu.mt/registrar/regulations)
If Artificial Intelligence is chosen as the area of specialisation, applicants shall have:
A) A Pass at Advanced Level at Grade C or better in Pure Mathematics and in one of the following
subjects: Applied Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Computing and Physics; and
B) A Pass at Intermediate Level in one of the following subjects: Applied Mathematics,
Biology, Chemistry, Computing, Economics, English, Information Technology,
Music, Philosophy and Physics (excluding the subjects presented at Advanced Level).

Admissions to the Artificial Intelligence area is also open to applicants in possession of:
A) A pass at Advanced Level at Grade C or better in Pure Mathematics; and
B) either the Diploma in Applied Information Technology of the City and Guilds of the
London Institute course no. 7235;or the MCAST-BTEC Higher National Diploma
(HND) in Computing.
If Computing and Business is chosen as the area of specialisation, applicants shall have:
(A) passes at Advanced Matriculation Level at Grade C or better in two of the following:
Accounting, Applied Mathematics, Biology, Computing, Chemistry,
Economics, English, Information Technology, Marketing, Philosophy, Physics,
and Pure Mathematics; and
(B) a pass at Intermediate Matriculation Level in Pure Mathematics at Grade C or better
(if not offered at Advanced Matriculation Level) and
(C) a pass at Intermediate Matriculation Level in Computing or Information
Technology (if not already offered at Advanced Matriculation Level)
Admissions to the Computing and Business area is also open to applicants in possession of:
Five passes in the Secondary Education Certificate Examination, including English
Language and Maltese; and a pass in Systems of Knowledge at Intermediate
Matriculation Level; and a pass at Intermediate Matriculation Level at Grade C or better in
Pure Mathematics, or at a corresponding level of other examinations recognised by
Senate for the purpose of the Admission Regulations; and
any one of the following:

the Diploma of the City and Guilds of London Institute Course No.7235 in Applied
Information Technology;

the MCAST-BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) in Computing;

any other qualification from a recognised Institute considered to be equivalent by the Board of
the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology.
If Software Development is chosen as the area of specialisation, applicants shall have:
A) A pass at Advanced Level at Grade C or better in two of the following subjects: Applied
Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Computing, Economics, English, Information
Technology, Philosophy, Physics and Pure Mathematics; and
B) A pass at Intermediate Level at Grade C or better in Pure Mathematics (if not already
offered at Advanced level); and
C) A pass at Intermediate Level in Computing or Information Technology (if not
already offered at Advanced Level).
Admissions to the Software Development area is also open to applicants in possession of:
Five passes in the Secondary Education Certificate Examination, including: English
Language and Maltese; a pass in Systems of Knowledge; a pass at Intermediate Level
at Grade C or better in Pure Mathematics; and any one of the following:
 The Diploma in Applied Information Technology of the City and Guilds of the London
Institute course no. 7235;

For the Bachelor of Communications/ (Honours) course applicants are required to choose
one subject as their second area from Oriental Studies (Arabic), Archaeology, Oriental
Studies (Chinese), Classics, Computer Information Systems, English, European and Global
History, European Studies, Geography, German, Oriental Studies (Hebrew), History,
International Relations, Italian, Knowledge and Information Management, Maltese, Music
Studies, Oriental Studies (Near Eastern Studies), Psychology, Social Studies, Sociology,
Spanish and Latin American Studies, Theatre Studies, or Theology.









Oriental Studies (Arabic), Archaeology, Oriental Studies (Chinese), Classics,
Geography, Oriental Studies (Hebrew, Knowledge and Information
Management, Oriental Studies (Near Eastern Studies), Psychology, Theatre
Studies, or Theology do not have any Special Course Requirements.

Admission to the above courses is also open to applicants in possession of:
(A) The Diploma in Design Foundation Studies from the University of Malta; or
(B) The MCAST-BTEC Extended Diploma in Arts and Design or Creative Media
Production, together with an Advanced Level at grade C or better in one of the
following subjects: English, Graphical Communication, History, Information
Technology, Marketing, Philosophy, and Sociology, or a subject deemed
equivalent by the Board, together with passes at SEC Level at Grade 5 or better in
English Language, Mathematics and Maltese; or
(C) An MCAST-BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) in a related subject, together with
passes at Secondary Education Certificate Level at Grade 5 or better in English
Language, Mathematics and Maltese.
All applicants shall be required to attend for an interview and present to an interviewing
board a portfolio of their recent works.
 Bachelor of Knowledge and Information Management (Honours)
For the Bachelor of Knowledge and Information Management (Honours) course applicants are required
to choose one subject as their second area from: Anthropology, History of Art, Oriental Studies
(Chinese), Classics, Communication Studies, English, European and Global History, European Studies,
French, Geography, German, History, International Relations, Language Technology, Linguistics,
Maltese, Music Studies, Psychology, Social Studies, Sociology, Spanish and Latin American Studies,
Theatre Studies, Theology.

(A) An MCAST Diploma for Pharmacy Technicians together with a pass at Advanced
Level at Grade D or better in Chemistry and SEC level passes in English Language,
Mathematics and Maltese at Grade 5 or better; or
(B) Be registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the Pharmacy Council and have two years
of experience in a pharmaceutical setting as a Pharmacy Technician, together with an

Note: Medical Maltese Proficiency Certificate
(i) Maltese applicants who, in terms of paragraph (5) of regulation 12 of the Admission
Regulations, 2016, are exempted from possessing a pass in Secondary Education
Certificate in Maltese are required to present the Medical Maltese Proficiency Certificate
awarded by the University of Malta prior to the commencement of the Course; and

Apart from the Special Course Requirements provided in this booklet applicants must satisfy the
General Entry Requirements for admission, namely, The Matriculation Certificate and Secondary
Education Certificate passes at Grade 5 or better in Maltese, English Language and Mathematics.

The inclusion of a course in this booklet does not imply that the course will be offered in October
2016. Please refer to the list of courses that will be available in 2017 which can be accessed on the
University’s website in due course. The commencement of any course is subject to availability of
resources at the time of opening and to other factors beyond the University’s control.
3.
Passes refer to passes at the Advanced or Intermediate Levels of the Matriculation Certificate
Examination of the University of Malta, unless otherwise specified. The University may accept
qualifications which it deems to be comparable.
4.
Grade E at Advanced Level is comparable to Grade C at Intermediate level;
Grade D at Advanced Level is comparable to Grade C at Intermediate level;
Grade C at Advanced Level is comparable to Grade B at Intermediate level;

Applicants may not offer a subject at both Advanced and Intermediate Levels.

Applicants who are graduates of a university, or who have other qualifications considered to be
sufficient, may be exempted by the University Admissions Board, on the advice of the Faculty
Admissions Committee, from the whole or part of these Special Course Requirements.
8.
Students choosing an area of study in a faculty other than the faculty where their degree course is
offered shall be required to satisfy also any Special Course Requirements indicated for that area of
study by the faculty offering the area of study.
9.
Applicants for courses which have a limited number of students shall be chosen according to the
bye-laws for the selection of applicants for admissions. In courses where a limited number of
students is indicated, preference will be given to those applicants who are fully qualified by a set
and published deadline. i.e. All applicants who are clearly qualified by this date will be placed in
rank order according to the selection criteria approved by Senate and those for whom places are
available will be informed immediately. Only if vacant places are still available, applicants fulfilling
all the Special Entry Requirements after the first ranking date, may be considered to take up the
remaining places. For the selection criteria please refer to the University’s website:

10. ‘Adult learners’ (over the age of 23 by the beginning of the course) applicants, must be in possession of those
qualifications and/or experience that would satisfy the Faculty Admissions Committee that they have reached
the academic standard required to follow the Course with profit. The eligibility of such applicants shall be
decided by the University Admissions Board on the recommendation of the Faculty Admissions Committee,
following an interview conducted by an interviewing board appointed for the purpose.
11. Applicants with other qualifications considered to be sufficient may be exempted by the University
Admissions Board, on the advice of the Faculty Admissions Committee, from the whole or part of these
