Introduction
The Cabrillo College Campus Climate Student Survey is conducted on a regular basis to help assess
student satisfaction with instruction, services, and facilities in addition to taking the gauge of campus
“climate”. The climate of a college is an ephemeral manifestation of the collective phenomenological
experiences of all the persons on a campus1. Often terms such as “respect”, “support”, and “quality” are
key in describing the campus climate. Each student will have a unique perspective on their time at the
college and we have endeavored to systematically collect a large number of representative viewpoints.
The data contained in this report can be used for:
• Program Planning
• Student Equity Planning
• Student Government
• Facilities Planning
• Technology Planning
• Grant Applications
• Policy Development
• Other Reports
This version of the report includes results spanning more than a decade of surveys. While most of the
questions have remained stable over that time period, some questions have been added, dropped, or
modified to maintain relevance. This is especially true in the area of technology use. Statistical analyses
have been applied to changes in responses over time with:
below average responses in red italic
average responses in black plain type
above average responses in blue bold
On the right of each row of responses from 2009 through 2012 is a small graph referred to as a
“sparkline”2 mapping the trend of responses over time. In the report these are referred to as “trend
lines”. Each trend line is scaled independently according to the minimum and maximum values in the
given time frame of responses within each question. This makes the individual changes easier to see but
can exaggerate changes over time. The color coding of the ratings is helpful to determine if changes
were significant or not. The report features overall responses to questions and readers conducting
planning are encouraged to ask follow up questions that may be addressed with additional analyses of
the data set.
This report could not have been produced without the dedication of the Planning and Research Office
staff and the participation of the hundreds of students who responded and the many faculty who
created space in their instructional schedule to give the students the opportunity to express their
experiences at Cabrillo College.
