Submit an essay describing your career goals including your proposed area of graduate study, your
reasons for selecting this area, and your reasons for wishing to undertake graduate study. Include
information about any previous research experience that you have had. Provide your personal insights as
to what you would contribute to the McNair Scholars program and what you expect to gain from
participation in the program. Please include any information about yourself that you think may be helpful
to the staff in considering your application.

(A suggested length is about 1000 words, but the focus will be on content not word count.)

Statement of Understanding
I understand that participation in the McNair Scholars Program is both an academic year and a summer
commitment. If selected as a Scholar, I will be expected to attend weekly meetings as well as occasional
other activities. I will also be expected to maintain a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA, take the required
graduate entry examination for my graduate area of study, and apply to graduate school. If I am selected
for the mentored summer research component, for which I will receive a stipend, from the McNair Scholars
Program, I understand that I will be expected to complete eight weeks of research and prepare a report,
short article, and abstract of that research. Program staff will assist me in preparing for these activities.
There is no cost to me for participation in the activities McNair Scholars Program or to receive services from
the McNair Scholars staff.

established eligibility requirements for participation in the McNair Scholars Program.
