Turning the New Experiences and Outcomes into Action Moving into the New Curriculum Task 1 (10 mins) Extract from Social Studies Principles and Practice IN PAIRS, discuss the section entitled ‘How are skills developed in social studies?” What would you consider to be the key messages for staff in this section? Extract from the Social Studies Principles and Practice section How are skills developed in social studies? The development of skills is an essential aspect of learning in social studies and the experiences and outcomes provide frequent opportunities for applying these skills in new and more complex contexts. Terms such as ‘investigating’, ‘exploring’, ‘discussing’ and ‘presenting’ are used throughout the experiences and outcomes from early to fourth level, recognising that at all stages learners are capable of exercising these skills at a level appropriate to their development. The framework ensures that social studies provide an important context for the development of literacy and numeracy skills. Children and young people as they learn within the social studies will develop a range of skills including: observing, describing and recording comparing and contrasting to draw valid conclusions exploring and evaluating different types of sources and evidence development of curiosity and problem solving skills and capacity to take initiatives interacting with others and developing an awareness of self and others planning and reviewing investigation strategies developing the capacity for critical thinking through accessing, analysing and using information from a wide variety of sources discussion and informed debate developing reasoned and justified points of view developing and using maps in a variety of contexts developing and applying skills in interpreting and displaying graphical representation of information developing an awareness of sequence and chronology presentation skills – oral, written, multimedia. Teachers will support children and young people as they progressively develop these skills by applying them in new and more complex contexts. Skills are to be regarded as a continuum and should not be ‘capped’ at any particular level. The professional judgement of teachers is essential in ensuring that individual learners are faced with the appropriate level of challenge in developing skills. Task 2 (10 mins) Extract from Technologies Experiences and Outcomes IN PAIRS, consider the reasoning behind and implications of experiences and outcomes which are: italicised across more than one level in lighter text Extract from Technologies Experiences and Outcomes ICT to enhance learning Italicised ‘ICT’ experiences and outcomes are likely to be met in all curriculum areas and so all practitioners can contribute to and reinforce them. Early First Second I explore software and use what I learn to solve problems and present my ideas, thoughts, or information. As I extend and enhance my knowledge of features of various types of software, including those which help find, organise, manage and access information, I can apply what I learn in different situations. TCH 0-03a TCH 1-03a / TCH 2-03a Third Fourth I can explore and use the features of a variety of familiar and unfamiliar software to determine the most appropriate to solve problems or issues. I can approach familiar and new situations with confidence when selecting and using appropriate software to solve increasingly complex problems or issues. TCH 3-03a TCH 4-03a I can access, retrieve and use information from electronic sources to support, enrich or extend Throughout all my learning, I can use search facilities of electronic sources to access and I can use ICT effectively in different learning contexts across the curriculum to access, learning in different contexts. TCH 1-03b retrieve information, recognising the importance this has in my place of learning, at home and in the workplace. select and present relevant information in a range of tasks. TCH 4-03b TCH 2-03b I enjoy exploring and using technologies to communicate with others within and beyond my place of learning. I explore and experiment with the features and functions of computer technology and I can use what I learn to support and enhance my learning in different contexts. TCH 1-04a / TCH 2-04a TCH 0-04a I enhance my learning by applying my ICT skills in different learning contexts across the curriculum. TCH 3-04a Throughout my learning, I can make effective use of a computer system to process and organise information. TCH 4-04a I enjoy taking photographs or recording sound and images to represent my experiences and the world around me. TCH 0-04b I can create, capture and manipulate sounds, text and images to communicate experiences, ideas and information in creative and engaging ways. TCH 1-04b / TCH 2-04b Task 3 (20 mins) Strategic Leadership in relation to the new guidance AS A WHOLE GROUP, discuss: How will you use the range of support available to ensure that all staff engage with the full guidance for all curriculum areas? o How will you ensure that all staff know that the P&P section is essential reading? o What other key messages need to be shared with staff about the frameworks and online support? How might this be managed : o In an Early Years setting? o In a Primary School? o In a Secondary department/faculty? o At authority level?
