I would like to inform you that a joint ITU-UNIDO Forum on “Sustainable Conformity
Assessment for Asia-Pacific Region” (25-27 November 2013) and the ITU Regional Workshop on
Bridging the Standardization Gap Workshop (28-29 November 2013) will take place at MiCasa
Hotel, Yangon, at the kind invitation of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology,
Republic of the Union of Myanmar. The joint ITU-UNIDO Forum on “Sustainable Conformity
Assessment for Asia-Pacific Region” is also supported by the Myanmar Scientific and Technological
Research Department. The ITU Regional Workshop on Bridging the Standardization Gap is being
organized in association with the Telecommunications Technology Association of the Republic of
Korea (TTA) and with the generous support of the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning
(MSIP), Republic of Korea.
The workshop will open at 0930 hours on the first day. Participants’ registration will begin at
0800 hours. Detailed information concerning the meeting room will be provided at the entrance of the
meeting venue.

Discussions will be held in English.

Participation is open to ITU Member States, Sector Members, Associates and Academic
Institutions and to any individual from a country which is a member of ITU who wishes to contribute to
the work. This includes individuals who are also members of international, regional and national
organizations. Both workshops are free of charge.

The joint ITU-UNIDO Forum on “Sustainable Conformity Assessment for Asia-Pacific
Region” will discuss policies and implementation strategies on how to establish standardization and
conformity assessment infrastructure in developing economies, especially in specific industry sectors
such as the telecommunications and information technology sectors. This workshop will cover
standardization policies at global, regional and national levels, the current global trend of harmonization
and mutual recognition in conformity assessment practices. The focus of this workshop is to discuss as
to how the underlying synergies be applied using well-established standardization, regulation and
mutual recognition in countries in Asia-Pacific region through enhanced cooperation amongst ITU,
UNIDO and national entities in the region. The draft programme of the workshop will be made

The ITU Regional Workshop on Bridging the Standardization Gap is aimed at providing
concrete advice and best practices to developing countries on global standards development and
building national standards readiness so that standardization competence of developing countries can be
enhanced. The workshop will also discuss the action in Programme 2 of WTSA-12 Resolution 44
regarding how developing countries can establish a national standardization secretariat in order to better
coordinate their standardization activities and participation in ITU-T study groups. The draft

Fellowships: We are pleased to inform you that one full fellowship per administration will be
awarded, within the Asia Region only, subject to available funding, to facilitate participation from
Least
Developed
or
Low
Income
Developing
Countries
(http://itu.int/en/ITUT/info/Pages/resources.aspx). An application for a fellowship must be authorized by the relevant
Administration of the ITU Member State. Fellowship requests (please use enclosed in Annex 1), must
be returned to ITU not later than 18th October 2013.
