Technologies: ICT/CDT SAL1: Third Level The Technologies Significant Aspect of Learning 1: Finding, discussing, organising and evaluating information through the technologies: Searching and retrieving information to inform thinking. Planning for Breadth, Challenge and Application: Bundled Experiences and Outcomes: I enhance my learning by applying my ICT skills in different learning contexts across the curriculum. TCH 3-04a By using problem-solving strategies and showing creativity in a design challenge, I can plan, develop, organise and evaluate the production of items which meet needs at home or in the world of work. TCH 3-14a I gain inspiration from natural forms, the built environment or imagination to develop a creative idea. TCH 3-15b Learning Statements: Investigate and use the features of search engines to solve a range of problems or issues. Develop and apply ICT skills to enhance learning in a range of contexts. Select appropriate problem-solving strategies to construct creative solutions. Design Brief: I have been asked to design a small product for Neptune*. It must have a mirror, it must go on the wall, and it must do something else… * Neptune has 20 small shops across the UK. It sells small products for homes. Learner Voice: Planning and Research: Learner Voice: Planning and Research: When we spoke about the design brief as a class, our ideas got better and better. I started thinking about a product that I would like to buy myself and where it could go in my house. I started to develop a plan by noting down items that I would use in my own room and wrote these in my notebook. When I was finalising my ideas, I wrote this list out here: Learner Voice: Planning and Research: I improved upon the list in my notebook before I wrote my final list of ideas out. I used my problem solving skills to think about which of the products could include a mirror. A mirror really only has a use when it is on a wall, so I thought about which of the items could be wallmounted. This is where I want to put it. I brought this photo in from home. I also knew that the purpose of the design was to produce an item that could be sold in Neptune. I brainstormed the kinds of things a shop like Neptune would sell and what people who shopped there would be looking to buy. To understand what our customers would want, I used various search engines to look for businesses which were similar to Neptune and that sold home décor products. With my peers, I discussed the key words that could be used to search for a shop like Neptune, and then used the computers in class to have a look at some of the products for sale. Style image * Planets/stars * Sea *Fish *Blue/colours * Nemo *Little Mermaid… The learner worked collaboratively with others to develop a deeper understanding of the design brief. The learner appreciated the value and variety of primary sources available to investigate and research existing products and possible ideas. The learner applied a range of ICT skills within this new and unfamiliar context to ensure that their final product would appeal to potential customers. I’m thinking that I can use the idea of “Neptune” to help style my product. The word made me think of The Little Mermaid which was one of my favourite films when I was little… The learner demonstrated creativity during the planning process. The learner used all sorts of sources to inspire their ideas, from music and television, to friends and relatives. The learner then used Search Engines to compile a thought board of images, text and colour. During the design process, the learner developed and applied a range of skills simultaneously: *Adhering to the design brief *Ensuring originality *Ensuring functionality ICT was used to help the learner by clarifying understanding, but also to help stimulate the thinking process. The plans showed clear evidence of each of these areas being addressed… As well as thinking about Images and styles, I am aware that I need to put this product on the shelves for someone to buy. It needs to be worth spending money on, so it needs to be useful.
